Sneak Peek of the I Like Scary Movies Interactive Experience

$

Want a chance to live in your favorite horror movies like The Shining, Nightmare on Elm Street, Beetlejuice, IT, and The Lost Boys? If you're in LA, you are in luck, as the new art installation called I Like Scary Movies, opens tomorrow, Thursday, April 4th! This time, the horror fans get their very own selfie museum, complete with recreations of some of your favorite scenes, characters, and set pieces from iconic horror films. Take a tunnel down to the sewers to float with Pennywise from IT: Chapter One, get trapped in the Overlook Hotel from The Shining, go down to the boiler room from Nightmare on Elm Street to sit on Freddy's throne and flee with his larger than life glove, head to the Murder Capital of the World to hang in the lair of The Lost Boys, and brush up on your Handbook for the Recently Deceased in the afterlife waiting room of Beetlejuice!

I was invited to get a sneak peek of this exhibit last night and couldn't wait to share my photos with you here as well as my general impressions of the experience. My hope is that it will give you a taste of what to expect from this fun experience, or, if you are unable to attend, hopefully you can live a bit vicariously through these photographs. I'll walk you through the exhibit below:

I Like Scary Movies is located in the historic Desmond building in Los Angeles. When I arrived I took their neat old elevator up to the second floor, all 25,000 square feet of it converted into a horror-lovers dream! With the blessing from Warner Bros., artist Maximillian has created what he calls "three-dimensional fan art" and I couldn't describe it better myself! I have been watching the fabrication of the exhibit come together on the I Like Scary Movies Instagram for months, and I've been fan-girling over all the incredible installations they have been putting together. To see them all completed made me grin ear-to-ear!

The iconic Shining elevator scene re-created with room 237 key tags
as the blood!

Peek-a-boo from Room 237's bathroom

Redrum, redrum!

Photo op for The Shining - a recreation of the Overlook bathroom window

The infamous bathroom door...

Photo op with Danny's trike

Come play with us, forever and ever and ever...

Take a peek through the ax cuts in this door for a wicked surprise

You enter through the "REDRUM" room, with huge hedge maze-like letters spelling out the infamous phrase. At an alcove to your left you can see the Overlook Hotel's elevators spilling forth with red room 237 door tags representing a cascade of blood. Another alcove takes you into room 237's bathroom, where you can climb into the tub to reenact the old woman scene from the film. From there, you walk into another room dedicated to The Shining, bordered with a hedge maze and featuring two photo opportunities - one of the bathroom door Jack breaks down with an ax and the other an exterior shot of the bathroom window that Wendy escapes from. The third and final Shining-inspired room awaits, and this one is probably the most impressive. It features wall-to-floor Overlook Hotel carpeting that makes you feel as if the hotel is eating you alive! There are several photo ops in this room, from the twins to Danny's tricycle to Room 237 to even a place where you can "sink" into the carpeting! Don't forget to peep through the gouged out door of Room 237 to get a fright!

The spinning funhouse tunnel to the IT sewers

Come float!

Searching for those dead lights

This installation was so impressive and you could even go inside this tower
of toys and debris (plus you can scare people on the other side looking
into Pennywise's toothy mouth)

Loved this photo op from the clown room in the Neibolt House!

Leave your fears, take a penny!

Once you escape the Overlook, it's down into the sewers to follow in the footsteps of the Losers Club from IT: Chapter One. Can you smell the popcorn yet? Once you get through the spinning funhouse tunnel, you emerge in the sewers of Derry, where you are faced with a tower of toys and debris and the hungry mouths of Pennywise opening wide to show off his shark-like rows of sharp teeth. Follow a path through tiny paper boats and you'll encounter the clown room from the Neibolt House, complete with a coffin you can get cozy in for pics! Across from that, take Pennywise's hand for another photo op. Before leaving the room, write your fears down and get a penny for your fears!

 1, 2, Freddy's coming for you...

The next hallway has two Nightmare on Elm Street rooms. One features Freddy's throne where you can sit as faces push through the red and green striped walls! I love how this looked! The next room features the huge articulated glove of Freddy - yes, the blades move up and down so you can pose them just right. The room is decorated like a boiler room (and I dare say, even smells like one?). Freddy's glove is really impressive and so huge in person!

Barbara and Adam, plus a ball pit you can play in behind them!

 Got a light?

 Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice

 Dante's Inferno

Sandworm shower

Next, you wander down a long hallway where in the middle is a really neat "I Like Scary Movies" room complete with black twisting vines and blue lights make a perfect backdrop for selfies. Continuing down the hallway, you'll get a peek into the Netherworld as you step into the waiting room of the recently deceased from Beetlejuice. Take a seat on one of the couches where you can get nommed on by a shark or lose your lower half. Kick off your shoes and jump in the ball pit behind Barbara and Adam and then slid down on either side of them. As you leave the room, take a look in an alcove to your left where you'll find the smoking man from the film. Continuing on, you can visit Beetlejuice's graveyard (and be the ghost with the most when you crawl into his grave for a photo op!) as well as a visit to Dante's Inferno.

 Worms, Michael, you're eating worms

Come hang out in the murder capital of the world, and dangle from
The Lost Boys bridge!

Lost Boys lair

The exhibit continues in the next room with The Lost Boys lair, where you can hang from a replica of the bridge, visit the Murder Capital of the World, and hang out in the underground vampire pad. The last room features a huge scale Chinese take-out box where you can nestle within strands of huge worms for an unforgettable photo! This room also holds some merchandise, including I Like Scary Movies t-shirts, Funko Pops from horror characters in the exhibit and other items.

Overall, I Like Scary Movies is a really fun interactive experience for horror fans. The horror installations were detailed and paid homage to many favorite films of horror fans. I appreciate all the hard work that went into creating the different exhibits and everything looked stunning. There were a few blank spaces and walls I think they could have done a bit more with, but with the scale already so grand they may have just run out of time.

When I attended the preview, I think there were maybe 50 people in attendance, but we were able to take plenty of photos even with that high number of people. Since tickets are on sale for specific times, I think the crowd flow will work well in this exhibit, especially since you can wander through the rooms at your leisure and also double-back to re-do certain rooms or ones you may have missed on your first walk through.

Also to note that there are no scare actors and this isn't a haunt - you simply walk through different themed rooms. So even if you have a scaredy-cat in your group, they should be okay! And groups are best for this exhibit since there are so many photo opportunities - get your whole ghoul gang to go and get some epic group pics! Plus it is handy to have someone with you willing to take photos of you (and you can return the favor by taking photos of them), though the staff is really helpful and will take any photos for you.

I enjoyed the experience, and even though I am an introvert and hate being the center of attention (eeeeeeek I hate having photos taken in public) I am glad I forced myself to take some selfies and had my photo taken throughout the exhibit.

This event opens Thursday, April 4th and runs Thursdays through Sundays until mid-June. Tickets are $39 each and you should allow at least 45 minutes to an hour to walk through the event and take photos. I would allow maybe an hour and a half so you can walk through the rooms a few times. You can find more info and purchase tickets on ilikescarymoviesexperience.com!

Ghouls and boils, this past Saturday I attended one of my favorite spooky spring-time events, Spook Show! This Halloween festival gathers some incredible vendors, entertainers, and Halloween-lovers together to celebrate Halloween in spring at the Halloween Club located in La Mirada, California. It definitely gives the spooky kids something to look forward to in springtime, when most eerie events are few and far between. Want a peek at my past years' coverage? Check it out past Halloween Club Spook Shows from 2018, 2017, 2016, and 2015!

Celebrate "Holidayz in Hell" at Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights

Yesterday, Universal Studios Hollywood announced their next maze for this year's Halloween Horror Nights! The popular "Holidayz in Hell" concept, which scared guests as a scare zone previously, will be turned into a full-fledged maze for Halloween 2019! I love that scare zone, and can't wait to see what they do with it in the larger-scale maze layout. Check out the official press release about this announcement below:

Universal City, CA, April 15, 2019 – From New Year's Eve to Valentine's Day, from Easter to the Fourth of July and from Thanksgiving to Christmas, Universal Studios Hollywood adds a demented twist to life's biggest moments in the all-original Halloween Horror Nights maze, "Holidayz in Hell."

Inspired by the popular scare zone of the same name, the "Holidayz in Hell" maze will feature an original score by electronic music artist and producer Figure and offer guests new reasons to dread the holidays. A tortured Tunnel of Love inhabited by a crazed Cupid on a quest for hearts to break or take will make this Valentine's Day anything but romantic; an unhinged Uncle Sam will create a sinister July 4th killerbration; treacherous turkeys will gobble, gobble an unsuspecting family; and a sick Santa will adorn Christmas Trees with human body parts, with many other milestone killer holidays.

Ah, the Holidayz from Hell have arrived.

Those who survive the Holidayz need not let down their guard just yet as a creepy Christmas-themed scare zone with additional frights awaits to fill beating hearts with holiday fear.

In addition to the music of Figure, who previously created a series of original sounds for Halloween Horror Nights, guests can expect to hear a new rendition of their favorite holiday tunes, remixed to accompany this hellish new maze.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood begins Friday, September 13, and brings together the sickest minds in horror to immerse guests in a living, breathing, three-dimensional world of terror. Featuring an all-new slate of unrivaled film production quality mazes and frightful scare zones uniquely themed to today’s most definitive horror properties, Halloween Horror Nights will taunt, terrorize and torment guests with spine-chilling haunted attractions as part of Southern California’s most extreme Halloween experience.

Updates on Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood are available online at Hollywood.HalloweenHorrorNights.com and on Facebook at: Halloween Horror Nights – Hollywood, Instagram at @HorrorNights and Twitter at @HorrorNights as Creative Director John Murdy reveals a running chronicle of exclusive information. Watch videos on Halloween Horror Nights'YouTube and join the conversation using #UniversalHHN.

Eerie Organizing for Glamour Ghouls

Springtime always inspires me to clean out my closets, de-clutter, and tidy up my home. The longer, sunnier days inspire me to brush away the cobwebs, give everything a deep clean, and find new ways to organize my things. Spring is time to start fresh and get my house spooky and sparkling, with everything in it's proper place.

I've been eyeballing some new organizers to achieve this goal, with a spooky twist, of course! I've been looking for makeup holders, curio shelves, desk organizers, photo and memento boxes, all with a gothic aesthetic. I thought it would be fun to share these eerie organizers with you, too, in hopes that they help with your own spooky spring cleaning!

Check out the items below to help you get eerily organized this spring and do some spooky spring cleaning:

Black Skull Makeup Brush Organizer - Creep your brushes in style by storing them in this skull brush organizer (which can also be used as a vase or organizer for other items).

Vintage-Inspired Gothic Makeup Brush or Pen Holder - Fancy up your bathroom or even your desk with this lovely gothic makeup brush or pen holder.

Sourpuss Coffin Cork Board - Keep your enamel pin collection organized and show it off in style with this coffin-shaped cork board. You could also organize necklaces, notes, or whatever else your dark heart fancies on this versatile cork board.

Black Gothic Perfume Tray Organizer - The perfect dark tray to organize your perfume bottles or other items on your vanity or in your bathroom.

IKEA Black Storage Boxes - I love stashing my photos, files, greeting cards, and other items in boxes and stacking them up on my bookshelves or in my closet. It makes everything look so much neater! You can't beat Ikea's prices on storage boxes, where you can get a range of sizes for great prices! I like the plain black ones (you could also decorate these however you like if you wish) for uniformity.

Vintage-Inspired Gothic Cotton Ball Holder - You can complete your vintage makeup organizer look with this storage organizer designed to hold cotton balls or whatever else your dark heart desires.

Black Gothic Desk Organizer Set - I love this gothic desk organizer decorated like filigree that contains a letter sorter, pen holder and sticky notes holder.

Sourpuss Bat Shelf - Display all your treasures on this adorable bat shelf by Sourpuss! I find that displaying things on shelves gives a house a much more organized and cleaner look. And this bat shelf is a decoration all in itself!

Vintage-Inspired Gothic Storage Box - This acrylic storage box may be used in the bathroom for storing makeup brushes, hair pins, makeup, or other accessories. It could also be used as a storage container for pens, post-it notes, etc. on your desk or elsewhere.

Skeleton Hand Jewelry Organizer - Display your jewelry and keep it organized by storing it on this macabre skeleton hand. You can display your rings, necklaces, bracelets, and other trinkets and treasures.

Black Filigree Desk Organizer - Here is another option for a desk organizer with the gorgeous filigree pattern. This one will fit accessories, scissors, pens, notepads, and more so you can keep everything you need within reach.

Black Cosmetic Beauty/Jewelry/Makeup Tower Organizer - I love the sleek, clean look of this drawer set, which can be used to store makeup, beauty products, makeup brushes, jewelry and accessories, and any other bathroom items.

LifeAfterDeath Design's Gothic Revival Corbel Floating Shelf - This stunning shelf comes in several different designs (corner shelf, straight regular shelf), but I love this gorgeous corbel design. It is perfect for displaying your most precious small treasures. This company also makes stunning coffin-shaped eyeshadow palette, lipstick, and brush holders (if you are lucky enough to snag one during their re-stocks!).

These eerie organizers will certainly be a help for glamour ghouls looking to do a little spooky spring cleaning!

Stay spooky!

10 Things I'm Loving This April

$
0
0

It's officially springtime here and temperatures are heating up, flowers are blooming, the rain has stopped, and summer is swiftly on the way (but that just means we are closer to Halloween season, right?!). This month has been a whirlwind of activity and seems to have gone by in a flash! So much good stuff happened that it is gonna be tough to consolidate it down to ten, but here we go!

As I've been doing on a monthly basis with these "ten things" posts, I'm sharing 10 items I'm loving this month. This practice encourages me to be grateful for the little (and big) things in my life and also give me a chance to share some cool things with you!

See the 10 Things I'm Loving This April below:

1.) Spook Show at Halloween Club - I had so much fun at this year's Spook Show Halloween Festival, held at the beginning of April! I got to see some of my favorite vendors, check out some new ones, visit with fiends, and came home with a huge haul (you can check out my day at Spook Show HERE)! I am so happy with all of my boo-tiful buys; there were so many fantastic vendors there this year. And I loved sharing the spooky love with my readers by hosting a giveaway where vendors contributed some truly wondrous items (the contest is over, but I always hold more on my Instagram!).

2.) Possessionmovie - This 1981 Andrzej Żuławski film has been high on my must-watch list, but I could never track down a copy (at least one that wasn't exorbitantly priced). I finally found one on Amazon, ordered it, and proceeded to be stunned by this visceral, emotionally violent film. I really have no words to describe it, but I loved it, and so glad I was able to finally watch it!

3.) I Like Scary Movies Experience - I got a sneak peek of this immersive art installation at the beginning of April and had a blast! It is like a selfie museum, featuring photo ops from recreated scenes in horror films like The Shining, IT, Nightmare on Elm Street, Beetlejuice, and The Lost Boys. It is open to the public now and quite a fun way to haunt an afternoon!

4.) Half-o-ween - April 30th marks the half-way point to Halloween!!! Eeeeek, we are almost halfway there and I couldn't be more excited! To celebrate, I'll probably watch some Halloween-themed films and continue scheming for this year's Halloween season. Check out 13 ways to celebrate Half-o-ween HERE!

5.) Walpurgisnacht - April 30th also marks Walpurgisnacht, or Witches' Night, a Germanic holiday with roots in paganism. It is said that on Walpurgisnacht, the veil is thinnest between our world and the spirit world, and witches take flight on their brooms to a huge gathering on a mountaintop. The holiday is still celebrated, especially in Germany, though instead of fearing witches it is now used to celebrate them. You can check out more about Walpurgisnacht, including witchy music, witch movie recommendations, and more, HERE!

6.) Thrifting finds - I went thrifting with my ghoul Nancy (who runs Dulce Calaveritas, a fabOOlous boutique for all kinds of fun Halloweenie accessories) and found a few wonderful items, including this Frankenstein Monster candy dispenser (sadly, it's broken, but still cute) and some horror DVDs. It was such a fun day, I can't wait until we do it again!

7.) The Undead Adventures of Bone Boy and Ghost GirlThe undying friendship between a skeleton and a ghost. Bone Boy and Ghost Girl are best friends who live in a cemetery. Though they may be dead and gone, their friendship is still alive and strong. This is a picture book for ALL spooky ages, with wonderful illustrations by Billy Polard (who is a longtime Insta friend!). It is beautifully illustrated not to mention has a fun message for spooky kids of all ages.

8.) Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery - I visited this historic LA cemetery this month and wandered its overgrown resting places for hours. This isn't your typical well-manicured and groomed Hollywood cemetery, but it is all the more gorgeous for being so wild and seemingly hidden right in the middle of downtown! Plus, it houses the final resting places of several noteworthy early Hollywood stars, like director Tod Browning and "The Spider Woman", vamp actress Louise Glaum, among with notable figures from politics, the Civil War, and civil and women's rights heroes. Tip: Watch out for the security guards, they don't like people taking photos.

9.) Good Mourning, Nancy podcast - This podcast is one of the best horror-themed ones out there! Gracie and Abbey are two horror fiends who are extremely knowledgeable about the genre and discuss horror from a feminist perspective. I love their deep dives into horror films and they bring up so many interesting points about themes, symbolism, and meaning behind films as well as fun facts and trivia.

10.) Terrifierenamel pin by Creepcake - I am not a big pin collector, but this Art the Clown (from Terrifier) pin by Christopher Creepcake is incredible!! I love Art, he is one of my favorite recent boogeymen (you can watch him in Terrifier and All Hallows' Eve) and so delightfully vicious and brutal. I kept ooooh'ing and ahhhhh'ing over this pin on Instagram, and Chris was so sweet and sent me a pin!

What have you been digging this April? Let me know in the comments!

Stay spooky, my pumpkins!

In past years, I've shared witch films to get you in the spirit of Witches' Night (check out those recommendations HERE and HERE), but this year I decided to turn my focus to the small screen. With the success of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina series as well as all things witchy gaining in popularity, I'm sure we all could use some bewitching shows to watch (or re-watch) in honor of Walpurgisnacht on April 30th (if you want to familiarize yourself with this celebratory witch holiday, read this post).

Below, I've rounded up witch-themed or witch-adjacent shows that you can stream on platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Shudder (I've also added links to Amazon if you want to own the shows on Blu-ray or DVD), check them out:

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix) - If you are one of the few people who hasn't seen this series yet, get on it! It is a dark spin on the Sabrina Spellman story and based on the dark horror comic of the same name. The aesthetic is gloriously dark, as is the storyline.

Salem (Hulu / Amazon Prime) - While not historically accurate whatsoever, I became enchanted by this darker take on witches of Salem. It is gory (for TV), has sumptuous costumes, and tons of intrigue, all set during the time of the Puritans in Massachusetts.

Diablero (Netflix) - This Mexican series is about a demon-hunter in Mexico City, but also features lots of brujeria (witchcraft). This series is such fun rollercoaster and I think more people should check it out! It is like a high-octane version of Supernatural. Read more of my thoughts on this show HERE.

American Horror Story: Coven (Netflix / Hulu / Amazon Prime) - This witchy season is many AHS fans' favorite, and it features some bewitching characters that I loved. In my opinion, the storyline falls apart after the first few episodes and doesn't live up to its potential, but I still enjoy this season for the characters and the fantastic location of New Orleans. I also appreciate that it has both magic and voodoo represented.

Lost Girl (Netflix) - If you haven't seen this Canadian series yet, you simply must! It is all about the fae and magic and has kick-ass heroines and fun, sexy storylines (the main character is a succubus) with lots of familiar mythical creatures. Of course, witches and magic feature prominently into the series.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer(Hulu) - This is still one of my favorite shows, and witches and magic play a large part alongside the vampires, demons, and other beasties that Buffy fights against. Buffy's BFF Willow plays a powerful witch, Buffy battles against witches, and even her Watchers and other members of the Scooby Gang perform spells to fight against evil.

The Magicians (Netflix) - This is kinda like an adult version of Harry Potter; it's a lot darker and features less likable characters. The first season was ok, but it kinda lost me after veering into more fantasy-type territory in subsequent seasons. Still, it's something different to check out and this show has garnered quite the cult following!

A Discovery of Witches (Shudder) - This new series recently premiered on Shudder, and while I haven't checked it out yet it sounds like a promising storyline dealing with the intersection of witch and vampire worlds, all set in gorgeous locations like London and Venice.

Supernatural (Netflix) - This long-running television show about two brothers battling supernatural forces isn't specifically about witches, but it does have several episodes dealing with witches and prominently features some witch characters (my favorite is Rowena, shown above). I know some people don't like this show, but I really enjoy it!

Light as a Feather (Hulu) - This teen series about a game of "Light as a feather, stiff as a board" that goes wrong due to witchcraft was actually fairly enjoyable and a breeze to get through!

Charmed (Netflix) - I watched this on and off when it was in TV (who else wanted to live in that house?!), and though I was never really into this show, I'm kinda interested to re-watch it to relive some of that nostalgia. There is also a recent remake of the show (which I have not yet watched yet).

Penny Dreadful (Netflix) - Swoon, this show is everything! I love how it delved into the arcane and Vanessa Ives' training with a witch, not to mention the classic horror monsters it adapted to its story. It only made it three seasons, but what glorious seasons they were!

Sabrina The Teenage Witch (Hulu) - Many of us grew up on this '90s sitcom based on the Sabrina Spellman character from the Archie comics. This series is still like comfort food for me - I love re-watching it when I'm sick or need a fun, light-hearted pick-me-up with some nostalgic '90s vibes!

The Order (Netflix) - Ok, this show is a bit ridiculous, and I can't figure out if I like it or loathe it, but it deals with secret societies of witches and secret societies of werewolves basically at war with one another and has Katharine Isabelle playing a badass witch/headmistress, which is what has actually kept me watching, haha.

Witches of East End (Hulu) - This series about a family of witches seems a bit cheesy and melodramatic, but sometimes you want brainless fluff. It only lasted two seasons, which will make it easy to breeze through.

The Worst Witch (Netflix) - This remake of the original series is charming and adorable, and features the little girl from Game of Thrones in a less formidable role as the bumbling witch-in-training Mildred Hubble.

Once Upon a Time (Netflix) - This popular fairy-tale/Disney based television shows features several wicked witches (as well as some good ones). Some of the stories are quite clever and I love swooning over the gorgeous costumes featured in the series.

True Blood (Amazon Prime) - Though focused mainly on vampires, this show does feature some witchy characters, including some that dabble in voodoo and Santeria, as well as a whole storyline in season four that focused on a coven of witches.

The Vampire Diaries / The Originals / Legacies (Netflix) - I'm lumping these three soapy series together since they share the same universe, characters, and history. While The Vampire Diaries and The Originals are focused on vampires, they also feature plenty of witchcraft, spellcasting, and witch characters. The most recent spin-off series, Legacies, follows a new generation of witches, vampires, and werewolves as they discover their own powers while surviving high school at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted in Mystic Falls.

Always a Witch (Siempre Bruja) (Netflix) - I haven't watched this Columbian series yet, but it's about a 17th century witch who time travels to the present for her long-lost love, and that premise sounds intriguing enough to give it a look!

Midnight, Texas (Hulu) - This series is about a small town that acts as a safe haven for supernatural forces like vampires, witches, psychics, hit men, and others with extraordinary backgrounds. I haven't watched this show, but it did garner a cult following before it was cancelled after two seasons.

Grimm (Amazon Prime) - Though this series doesn't have what you might call traditional witches, it features a spice shop owner (who is also a Wesen, or supernatural creature) who is handy at mixing up potions, supernatural Hexenbiests that are adept at witchcraft, and other supernatural creatures that our lead "Grimm" either battles against or is allied with. I really enjoyed this show, it's a shame it was cancelled.

That's most of the witch-themed television shows that are streaming now on Netflix, Hulu, Shudder, and Amazon Prime, or available on Blu-ray or DVD on Amazon. Will you be watching any of these in honor of Walpurgisnacht?

Stay witchy, my spookies!

Universal Studios announced another maze for their Halloween Horror Nights events in Hollywood and Orlando, bringing back their iconic Universal Monsters! Hollywood will see a showdown in the new "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" maze, while Orlando will see all of the classic monsters come to life.

I am really excited to hear that Halloween Horror Nights is doing these two Universal Monsters-themed mazes! I am stoked that I'll get to experience Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man at Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood! Check out more details on these two mazes from the official press release below:

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., ORLANDO, Fla. (April 29, 2019)– "Universal Monsters" will come to life in all-new terrifying Halloween Horror Nights mazes at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort, inspired by Universal's original cinematic monsters and the movie studio that invented the horror films. The terrifying experiences on both coasts will wake some of the most frightening and legendary monsters in horror history and bring them face-to-face with guests at the nation's premier Halloween events.

On the heels of last year's successful "Universal Monsters" experience, Universal Studios Hollywood will introduce an all-new horrifying maze, "Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man," that delves deeper into the Universal Monsters' lore. Loosely based on Universal's 1943 horror movie of the same name, this reimagined tale for the 21st century takes guests on a terrifying journey that bears witness to a deadly confrontation between these two horror icons and the epic battle that rages between them. Guests will follow in the footsteps of the Frankenstein Monster, lured by exotic music towards a nearby gypsy camp while desperately seeking sanctuary from a mob of angry villagers determined to destroy him. It is within the gypsy encampment that the Frankenstein Monster meets The Wolf Man and where the madness begins as guests are led along a path of destruction through the murky Moors, to a creepy cemetery and into the smoldering ruins of Castle Frankenstein and its icy cellars beneath.

Once again, GRAMMY® Award-winning musician, SLASH, long hailed as one of the best electric guitar-players of all time, will collaborate with Universal Studios Hollywood to compose an original score for the maze. Witness the rise of the undead that begins this fall at Universal Studios Hollywood below:

At Universal Orlando Resort, guests will be hunted by every single grisly monster from the anthology, including Dracula, The Wolf Man and Frankenstein, in the all-new experience, "Universal Monsters." Each sinister environment will bleed from one to the next as guests press through the darkened realms of horrifying creatures. Guests will face bloody terrors in Dracula’s castle and flee from what is behind the cryptic howls of the grim forest. They’ll run from the horrifying man-made monster within Dr. Frankenstein's laboratory, and fall prey to an ancient Egyptian curse as they are pursued by the evil Mummy. Guests will try to escape the mysterious Creature lurking in the Black Lagoon, or become victims of other horrors waiting in the shadows. Witness the terror that is coming to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort below:

Universal Studios'"Halloween Horror Nights" is the ultimate Halloween event. For more than 25 years, guests from around the world have visited "Halloween Horror Nights" to become victims inside their own horror film. Multiple movie-quality mazes based on iconic horror television shows, films and original stories come to life season after season. And, the streets of each park's event are transformed into highly-themed scare zones where menacing scare-actors lunge from every darkened corner.

"Halloween Horror Nights" begins Friday, September 6 in Orlando and on Friday, September 13 in Hollywood. Additional details about the events will be revealed soon. A limited time ticket offer and vacation package for Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights are on sale now. For more information about "Halloween Horror Nights" at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort, visit www.HalloweenHorrorNights.com.

Have a Haunting Half-o-Ween and a Witchy Walpurgisnacht!

Today, April 30th, marks halfway to Halloween and Walpurgisnacht (aka Witches' Night aka Hexennacht). Walpurgisnacht is known as the "other Halloween", where the veil between the worlds separating known and unknown is thinnest, allowing all manner of spirits, witches, otherworldly creatures, demons, devils, and so forth to push through into our world.

Ancient tales of witches, devils, and spirits gathering high in the mountains on this night seems to have its roots in Germany. Brocken Peak in Germany's Harz Mountains has two rock formations called Devil's Pulpit (Teufelskanzel) and the Witches' Altar (Hexenaltar), where these legends originate from. Nearby the Brocken Peak is the Hexentanzplatz, which literally means Witches' Dance Floor, where many pre-Christian rituals were performed, including the rites of old Saxon cults honoring the forest and mountain gods and goddesses.

It was said that witches would hold a grand gathering or sabbat on the night of April 30th, where witches would dance and frolic and the whole party would be presided over by the Devil himself. This night was so feared that humans took extra care and precautions to protect themselves and their families on Walpurgisnacht. Huge bonfires were lit in villages to keep flying witches and spirits away, and these burned all night while vigilant villagers kept watch (and turned it into a party, with their own dancing and merriment).

Today, celebrates are still held throughout the Harz Mountains in Germany, with the biggest celebrations occurring on the small hill town of Thale, located at the Hexentanzplantz (Witches' Dance Floor). You can expect lots of people dressed as witches or devils, bonfires, carnival games, and a festival-like feel in many hilly towns of this region.

As I mentioned earlier April 30th and Walpurgisnacht also marks the halfway point to Halloween! Only six more months to go until our beloved holiday is here again! To celebrate both Walpurgisnacht and Half-o-ween, check out some of these past posts:

Spooky Summer Goth Essentials to Survive the Sun

$

With Memorial Day behind us, I can't believe summer is almost here! I'm already in shock of how long the days are stretching and I am already dreading the warmer temperatures. Summer is the last season before the glorious return of fall, and all we need to do is survive summer to get to the best season, autumn! And of course, summer can be fun if take the time to stock up on some necessities that make it so much more pleasant for us darklings...

I have to say that summer is usually a struggle for me (and many other fellow fiends who wear black year-round), so in preparation I've rounded up some spooky summer goth essentials to help me and my fellow spookies survive the summer. Below I'm sharing clothes, accessories, pool floats, parasols, swimsuits, makeup, sandals, and more with a spooky twist to make summertime more bearable.

Supreme Parasol - More people should carry parasols during the summer, not only are they so dramatically elegant, but they keep you so much cooler and prevent sunburns. I love the pagoda shape of this Supreme Parasol from Foxblood.

Sourpuss 6 Feet Under One Piece Swimsuit - Rest peacefully this summer in this killer one-piece swimsuit adorned with coffins. This is so creepy-cute!

Vampira Coffin Beach Towel - Lounge at the beach or pool with ghoulish glamour babe Vampira on this coffin-shaped towel.

Demonia Deviant Studded Platforms - I love the minimalist look of these platform sandals, especially since I love keeping it low-key and non-fussy during summer. You can wear these with a swimsuit, shorts, a dress or skirt, capris, or pants and keep those tootsies cool. These particular Demonia sandals are made with all man-made, vegan materials, too!

Large Brimmed Sun Hat - You can't survive summer without a large floppy sunhat, you just can't! This one will keep you cooler wherever your summer adventures take you.

Mesh Rhiannon Flowing Oversized Tunic Top - I love this airy mesh top that can be used as a swimsuit cover up or layered over a tank top or tee. You can dress it up or dress it down, and this versatility, plus the added ventilation the mesh fabric provides, makes it easy-breezy for summer.

The Lip Bar Vegan Liquid Matte Lipstick in Drama Queen - You gotta have a fierce lip color for summer, and this vegan/cruelty-free one called "Drama Queen" is a dreamy, purple-y shade that just screams summer to me!

Wireless Skull Speaker - This portable skull speaker looks perfect for your next pool/beach/lake/river or backyard hang-out! And the battery makes sure that it will last up to 10 hours on a charge and it is small enough to take with you pretty much anywhere.

Dark Heart High Low Dress - One absolute essential to surviving summer as a goth is a light, flowy dress that still matches your dark aesthetic, and this one from Foxblood is exactly it! It is not only soft and drapes beautifully, but it has handy cut-outs on the waist to allow for maximum air flow.

Zuzu Luxe Raven Liquid Eyeliner - My favorite eyeliner, hands down! Stays put all day (and night) long, even in warmer weather. Plus it is all vegan and cruelty-free! I've tried so many eyeliners, and this one is still the best in my opinion.

Purple Death Tarot Tank Top - I love the dark purple plum color of this cozy tank top, because sometimes you might want a pop of color! This would look so creepy-cute over some shorts (like the ones below!).

Black Distressed Shorts - Adore the distressed look of these black denim shorts. I'm really not a shorts-type of person, but I recently bought my first pair of shorts in forever for some summer festivals and hiking. These will keep you cooler on the hottest of summer days.

Demonia Emily Double Bat Buckle Sandals - Eeeeek how boo-tiful are these batty vegan sandals by Demonia?! I absolutely adore them and would wear them for a cemetery picnic or a day spent among the stacks at the library or book store.

Dead Sea Burke and Hare Candle - This vegan candle made from soy wax evokes the scent of stormy seas with salt water, a twist of lime, creeping moss and mysterious vetiver over a base of wet sand and patchouli. It is the perfect fresh scent for the warm days of summer.

Black Beach / Pool Cover Up - I am obsessed with lacy black swimsuit cover ups! Besides wearing them over swimsuits, I also love wearing them over regular outfits since they provide a bit of extra coverage and witchy style while still being airy enough to keep you cool.

Under the Stars One Piece - I am over the moon for this celestial one-piece swimsuit by Killstar. Isn't it heavenly?!

Elvira Mistress of The Dark Coffin Beach Towel - Take the Mistress of the Dark with you to the beach or pool and show them that spooky ghouls and boils do it better!

Pacifica's Stellar Gaze Length + Strength Mascara Supernova - I love Pacifica's mascaras, and this one stays put even on the most sweltering of summer days. This one isn't waterproof (so don't wear it in the pool), but for a dark, everyday mascara it is truly wondrous!

Lace Folding Fan - I always carry a fan tucked inside my purse wherever I go, since I am perpetually hot in Southern California. In summer months a lacy, black fan is perfect for keeping yourself cool and I also like to think that it adds a bit of mystique to your darkling image!

Tropigoth All Over Pattern Tank Top - I can get down with tropigoth style and I am loving this tropical skull print tank by Black Mast. They also have this print available on towels, bikinis, shorts, and more!

Iza Lace Mini Skirt - Swoon, how gorgeous is this ethereal skirt? It is made with faux leather and lace, and looks like the perfect romantic skirt for long walks on the beach under the moon. Pair it with a simple tank top and some sandals, and this would make one adorable outfit. Plus, you can wear it again in fall/winter by pairing it with tights, boots, and a light sweater!

Scorpion Pool Float - In past years I've shared pool floaties shaped like coffins, planchettes, and more, but how wicked cool is this scorpion pool float?!

Strange and Unusual Floppy Sun Hat - If you want sun protection but want something a little bit more than your standard black floppy hat, snag this "Strange and Unusual" hat to stand out from the crowd!

One Piece Triangle Swimsuit - This one-piece swimsuit is absolutely gorgeous and I love the cut-outs on the side and how the fabric is gathered at the bust.

Sea Witch Tote Bag - Let your inner sea witch loose on the beach with this purple tentacled tote by Odd Like Us.

HydroFlask - Stay hydrated to stay healthy! Water is so important and we rarely get enough of it. In order to drink more water, I take my HydroFlask with me everywhere, especially in summer. I love my water ice cold, and my HydroFlask keeps it cold for a whole day (seriously!). I can also leave it in the car for a few hours and it still stays cold (even on sweltering summer days).

The Death Deck Card Game - If you go on a long car or plane trip this summer, take this Death Deck with you to amuse yourself and your travel companions! This card game encourages people to discuss death and learn more about what loved ones want when the are gone, and it is a surefire conversation starter.

Trixie Sunglasses - One of the most important accessories of summer (or really any season when the sun shines) - sunglasses! These oversized Trixie sunglasses from Foxblood are stunning!

Black is My Happy Color Tank Top - Yes, I wear black even in summer, even when it is over 100 degrees. Black is my happy color! This tee might just stop your friends from asking for the one-millionth time, "are you really wearing black when it's this hot out?"

Black Lace Shorts - The scalloped lace detail on these shorts makes all the difference. If you are a romantic goth, but still want to stay cool this summer, I think these are a great choice. I imagine wearing these while lounging around an old cemetery reading Baudelaire poems.

Black Meditation Sandals - How comfy do these black meditation sandals look?! I love how they are dressier than plain old flip flops, but also look really comfortable yet still stylish.

Andalou Skin Primer BB Benefit Balm with SPF 30 - I love this untinted BB primer by Andalou Naturals for summer because it gives my usually shiny skin a clean, matte look and keeps my makeup in place all day long, even when it is hot outside and I'm sweaty! I also love that it contains SPF to protect my skin. They have a few different kinds for various skin types, but this one is the one I use in summertime and it keeps everything locked down without feeling greasy or heavy.

Skeleton Flamingo Yard Ornaments - Don't forget about your yard / porch! Show your spookiness with these skeleton flamingos for some creepy kitsch!

What are your essentials to surviving the summer as a goth? I'm wishing you a summer filled with black lemonade, cool breezes, spooky summer tunes, twilight cemetery strolls, creepy-cute swimsuits, beach bonfires, melon-o-lantern carving parties, and lots of summer-themed horror movies!

10 Things I'm Loving This May

I'll be honest, this month has been a struggle for me. I got sick at the beginning of the month for two weeks and also found out we have to move at the end of our lease. In order to fund this unexpected move, I've been selling a large chunk of my Halloween collection. The whole month feels like one long battle against being sick and then another battle of purging belongings. I don't share this because I want pity, but just to show that life can throw us some curveballs sometimes and I just wanted to share why I've been so absent from here and social media. I know it will all work out in the end and I'm excited for a change of scenery, but it sure has been stressful.

Still, this month hasn't been all bad - I feel like even more than usual I need to focus on the positive and savor the little things I sometimes take for granted. As per my monthly tradition, I'm sharing 10 things I'm loving this month below, which encourages me to reflect on things I'm grateful for this month as well as sharing some cool things with you!

Check out 10 Things I'm Loving This May below:

1.) Morbid Podcast - I just started listening to this podcast and I am hooked! The two female hosts cover a myriad of true crime cases, spooky history, unsolved mysteries, urban legends, and more, featuring thorough research and entertaining, witty chit-chat. They've only been around for a year, and I am making my way through their back catalog of cases, but I can't wait to see what the future holds for them and what grisly new cases they share with listeners.

2.) The Perfectionon Netflix - Whoa, just whoa! This one had been on my must-see list and I was delighted when it popped up on Netflix. I didn't exactly know what to expect, but holy sh*t was this a freaking roller coaster of a film! It is best watched blind, so go in cold and enjoy (and damn, that last image was beautiful!).

3.) Beyond Meat at all Del Taco locations - Being vegan just keeps getting easier and easier, and you can now score Beyond Meat tacos, burritos, and more at your local Del Taco!! Sub out any protein for the Beyond Meat, hold any cheese or sour cream, add their new vegan cilantro lime rice, and you've got a tasty vegan option at a fast food restaurant!

4.) The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder - The past nine Friday nights have found me parked on the couch to watch some horror films with Joe Bob Briggs on his Last Drive-In show on Shudder! This show has given me something to look forward to every week, and I'm sad that it had its last episode (with a double-feature of the awful Blood Harvest and the delightful Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2) this past week. BUT I'm so happy that Shudder has renewed the series and we will get more Joe Bob!

5.) Moonray Bloom Hair and Body Spray by Pacifica - This scent is perfect for spring and smells of florals, citrus, and greens. It reminds me of taking a walk on a warm spring night through gardens of night-blooming jasmine and gardenia.

6.) Purging - While it is sad I am getting rid of 80% of everything I've gathered over the years (included what was a pretty awesome Halloween collection), I'm trying to look on the bright side and think how much easier it will be to move without so much stuff. Plus, I can use the money I earn from selling my collection to hopefully find a dreamy new home. And I'm hoping this will help me curb my spending habits around Halloween and buy less stuff in the future.

7.) Breakfast Republic vegan options - This new breakfast restaurant recently opened at UCI in Irvine and boasts three vegan breakfast options! For my first visit there, I got the vegan Jammin' Bennie and I was so impressed with how good it was! It features an English muffin topped with blackberry jalapeno jam, crumbled vegan Italian sausage, fluffy vegan "eggs" (made out of mung beans!), slathered in a creamy vegan hollandaise sauce and served with their crispy home potatoes. I can't wait to try their other two vegan options, which include a scramble and an omelet.

8.) Doorbells at Dusk book - I needed a Halloween pick-me-up, and this month I finally got around to reading the Halloween book Doorbells at Dusk, which features short stories set on or around Halloween. I've been savoring each story and taking my time with this book. It is my escape from reality into a a spooky Halloween landscape!

9.) Graveyard Goods'Halloween 3 sweats - OMG I have had my eye on these and I finally snagged them! They only offer them in small batches every once in a while and are extremely limited, so I count myself lucky to have been able to get these. They are so soft and cozy and I love the design!

10.) Slasher season 3 on Netflix - The Slasher series on Netflix is a fun Canadian TV show that features a brand-new storyline and characters each season. As the name implies, the storylines of each season revolve around a slasher-like killer picking off characters. Season 3 focuses on a serial killer called "The Druid" and it was the perfect series to watch for some brainless fun!

Sneak Peek: Halloween 2019 At Home Stores

As you may have seen across social media, At Home stores have started rolling out their Halloween merch in-stores! Yes, it is only June, but this a major Code Orange! We actually had the very first At Home store in California open here in Orange County, just about 20 minutes away from where I live. I went and checked it out this weekend to see if they had any Halloween stuff out, but unfortunately they had nothing and told me they don't expect any Halloween stuff stocked until late June.

Until then, I thought I would share a sneak peek of the Halloween items that are currently on their site that will be available for purchase in stores soon (unless you are lucky and your At Home already has these items stocked). It looks like the theme this year is skewing towards Game of Thrones-themed decor - lots of dragons, crowns, etc.

In the coming weeks I'm sure they will have many more additions to their website and in-stores!

And for those in SoCal, you can make the trip to the new At Home store at 26532 Towne Centre Drive in Foothill Ranch , CA 92610! Halloween stuff won't be in this particular store until approximately end of June, but you can always call ahead to see if they have any Halloween items stocked.

Stay spooky, creeps, and happy Halloween hunting!

Southern California finally got its very first At Home store (in Lake Forest, located in Orange County) which means we can finally stop drooling over pics from the rest of the country and we can finally get our claws on their Halloween items! I shared some items from their website a few weeks, ago, but our local SoCal store has already started putting out Halloween items in June and has seen Halloween lovers descend on the store to snap up Halloween goodies as well as snapping Instagram pics! I've been stalking the store for a few weeks now, waiting for them to start putting out the Halloween goods. I struck out the first few times, but finally got lucky last Friday! They were still busy unpacking lots of boxes, but they already three aisles of Halloween and autumn stuff out. I can't believe Halloween products are already hitting shelves, but seeing all that orange and black really put a huge grin on my face!

Want to see what they had out? Take a look below:

This is the first thing I saw!! It filled me with Halloween joy!!

10 Things I'm Loving This June

This has been a hectic month with trying to pack and get ready for a big move, plus getting ready to travel for a wedding, not to mention how bonkers work has been! Thank goodness I had some things that kept me sane and happy this month, and as per my monthly tradition, I'm sharing 10 of these things with you below. This monthly practice encourages me to reflect on things I'm grateful for this month as well as sharing some of my favorite things with you! And I always love to hear about items you are digging this month, feel free to share them with me in the comments!

Here are my 10 Things I'm Loving this June:

1.) Halloween arrives At Home - OMG, SoCal finally got their very own At Home store! For years I've been wistfully looking at other's photos from At Home, which is among the first store that puts out Halloween stuff. Now I have my very own At Home to stalk and buy Halloween goodies from! I've already been a few times, and at my last visit I was delighted to find Halloween decorating the aisles (check out what they had HERE!).

2.) June Gloom - It has been cool and cloudy almost all month and I am loving it! I wish it was like this all the time, as this weather reminds me of autumn and spookiness!

3.) Order of the Thinned Veil membership package - I received 2019's membership package filled with Halloween art and goodies. It certainly gave me the spooky boost of joy I needed this month. Just look at some of the items I received above - a gorgeous print, a cute little clown jack-o-lantern, and membership pin!

4.)  Derma E Even Tone Brightening Cleanser with Vitamin C and Vitamin C Intense Night Cream - The warmer summer weather always plays havoc with my skin, so I've been trying these two vitamin C skin products from Derma E this month. They are vegan and cruelty-free (as are all of Derma E's products), and as with other Derma E products I've tried, they are fantastic! My skin feels and looks better from using the facial cleanser morning and night, and then using the cream at night. The cream isn't too heavy like how some night creams can be, and makes my skin look refreshed in the morning! Definitely look forward to using these the rest of the summer.

5.) Haute Macabre's Mummies of Mexico City Hair Gloss - I pre-ordered this Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab hair gloss from Haute Macabre, and it finally arrived this month. I have been obsessed with it ever since! I've used hair gloss from Haute Macabre before (and gushed about it many times), but this scent is my favorite of all the ones I've ever used! I'm not sure the scent profile, but I swoon pretty much anytime I put it on! I hope they bring this back because I want to order so much more of this scent!

6.) Purging - Ok, I listed this last month as well, but it has spilled over into this month, too. Ahead of moving I have been purging so many items in my collection. I've had several in-person yard sales, as well as selling items online and also donating items or selling them on Craigslist. It feels so good to unburden myself of things (though I will miss many of them, though I know I can re-build my collection when I get re-settled).

7.) Jack-o-melons everywhere - I love carving watermelons into jack-o-melons (or melon-o-lanterns, which is really more correct) every summer, and I am delighted to see more and more people doing the same! We have jack-o-melons in honor of Summerween (around June 22nd every year) and they make wonderful centerpieces for Fourth of July celebrations, summer picnics, etc., etc. Instagram has been filled with jack-o-melons this year, and seeing them always makes me grin! I love the spooky Halloween community!

8.) Celebrity Ghost Stories - This just hit Amazon Prime and I binged seasons 1 and 2 in a few days while packing. I was just thinking about this series a few months ago and how I'd like to see it again, so I'm so glad it finally hit a streaming platform! It's fun and some of the stories are really creepy! One of my faves is Marilyn Manson talking about when he was young and read from the Necronomicon. Lots of spooky goodness and wonderful to have on in the background.

Vegan strawberry milkshake from The Black Bean in
Fountain Valley, CA

9.) Strawberry everything - I've been craving strawberries this month; everything from strawberry-scented shampoo (Pacifica used to make one I LOVED, but they've discontinued it, boo), to dried strawberries to strawberry milkshakes (vegan, of course), to fresh strawberries. What is more perfect that kicking off summer season with delicious strawberries?!

10.) Two Girls One Ghost Podcast - I recently started listening to these two ghouls who talk about hauntings, the supernatural/paranormal, plus other macabre subjects. I had a lot of fun listening to their recent "Haunted Anaheim" episode where they discussed paranormal stories from Disneyland and the notorious Black Star Canyon.

What have been some things you are loving this June?

P.S. I may be MIA in July as I will be traveling and then moving. Hopefully I'll still be able to share my Halloween finds here!

Stay spooky!
