Hello darlings! I hope you are having a spectacular February! Valentine's Day is behind us (did you see my goth love songs playlist, spooky love decor ideas, creepy cards, and ghoulish gift guide posts?) and hopefully you've all been celebrating Black History Month and Women in Horror Month! As for me, I've been watching a new horror documentary, listening to gloomy tunes, reading a thrilling book, eating delicious vegan sweets, and more. As I've been doing on a monthly basis with these "ten things" posts, I'm sharing with you 10 items I'm loving this month, which encourages me to be grateful for the little (and big) things while also passing along cool things for you to check out. See the 10 Things I'm Loving This February below:

One of the highlights of my month was watching the Horror Noire
documentary on Shudder!

1.) Horror Noire on Shudder - Shudder's new documentary (based on Robin R Means Coleman's book) is an eye-opening and very necessary discussion about how black people were historically portrayed in horror films as well as how they are being portrayed now and proves that representation matters. At times a hard watch due to some portrayals of black people in film, but ultimately listening to voices like author/screenwriter/producer Tananarive Due, writer/producer Ashlee Blackwell (best known for her stellar horror site, Graveyard Shift Sisters), director Rusty Cundieff (in horror circles best known for Tales from the Hood), actors Ken Foree, Loretta Devine, and Tony Todd, filmmaker Meosha Bean, writer/director Jordan Peele (Get Out) and many more and hearing about their experiences with race in horror films is eye-opening and really interesting. I loved this documentary and think it is so important for all horror fans to see it. PLUS, Shudder also added many films discussed in the documentary, including Bones, Tales from the Hood, The People Under the Stairs, Ganja and Hess, which I have been enjoying re-watching.

2.) Vegan Horror Society - This UK-based brand makes killer apparel for vegan horror fans! They just launched, and I am loving their offerings so far, which include Vegan Horror Society (VHS for short, which is so perfect!) hoodies and t-shirts, as well as shirts emblazoned with "Love Horror, Hate Animal Cruelty," "Dario Argento Rules," and "Vegan of the Living Dead." I can't wait to wear my new tees from them! Follow them on Instagram to be the first to see new designs, and check out all their available designs on their website!

Nom, nom, nom, new NadaMoo! flavors I got this month!

3.) New NadaMoo! Vegan Ice Cream Flavors - NadaMoo! is one of my favorite companies making vegan ice cream, so every time they release a new flavor I get so stoked! This month they released three new flavors: Marshmallow Stardust, Peach Cobbler, and Banana Caramel Crunch! I was able to get my hands on two of the flavors at my local Sprouts store - Marshmallow Stardust and Banana Caramel Crunch! I've tried the banana flavor already and LOVE it so much! Can't wait to dig into the magical-looking Marshmallow Stardust and get my claws on their Peach Cobbler flavor.

4.) Going West True Crime Podcast - This is a new podcast I was introduced to by its creators via their Instagram, and from the first episode I was hooked! They just launched in December, but their episodes are well-researched, professionally presented, and the two hosts really draw you in to their discussions of some shocking true crimes (most of which I hadn't heard of and were new-to-me!). You can find them on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Podbean, etc. - find out more about them on their site!

5.) Oregano Oil - At the beginning of the month I came down with the flu, which was awful, but I heard taking oregano oil capsules could boost your immune system and shorten the length of the sickness. As soon as I started to feel icky, I started taking oregano oil capsules and took them once a day while I was sick. I was only sick about 4 days, versus the full week that Mister Spooky was sick, so I say the oregano oil really did work! I used Nature's Way Oregano Oil (which are vegan) - sometimes they cause an upset stomach, so I always take them with a vegan probiotic (I use Deva Nutrition Vegan Probiotic Capsules) with a meal.

6.) Dahlia's Tear - This dark ambient music from Sweden is described in the Spotify bio as being "...filled with an all-overshadowing darkness and a wind made of despair wafting through the gloomy soundscapes Dahlia's Tear sound is painting." And I am here for that! Their discography was the perfect, epic background to a gloriously gloomy and rainy February.

7.) Apricot Bloom perfume by Good Chemistry - I picked up this vegan and cruelty-free perfume from Target last year, but only started wearing it recently after realizing how much I love it! It has fragrance notes of apricot, neroli and amber to create a warm floral scent. Now, I never considered myself a fan of florals, but I guess things change! I cannot stop sniffing myself after spritzing it all over - it smells fresh, a tiny bit fruity, and good enough to eat! You can find this brand (who has lots of other scents I'm dying to try) at Target!

Channel Zero: The Dream Door with bonus Cinnaholic cinnamon bun
(yup, the cinnamon bun is all vegan, including the heart sprinkles!).

8.) Channel Zero's Season 4: The Dream Door - Channel Zero is one of the best horror series I've ever seen - each season managed to crawl under my skin and make me squirm. I was devastated when I heard that SyFy cancelled the series, and I'm still upset about it. This month, the latest season was released on DVD and I finally got to watch it. Again, I was blown away by the creepiness the series exudes, especially since each season has a completely new story and characters it tackles. The stories are all unique and manage to cover different cultural/societal issues and have a refreshing take on horror tropes, all the while creating wholly new and terrifying monsters. If you haven't started watching Channel Zero, do yourself a favor and pick up all the seasons (available on DVD on Amazon - Season 1: Candle Cove | Season 2: No-End House | Season 3: Butcher's Block | Season 4: The Dream Door) or watch it on Shudder.

My Girl Scout vegan cookie haul from this month!

9.) Vegan Girl Scout Cookies - Nom nom nom! I look forward to this time every year since I know Girl Scouts will be slinging their irresistible cookies! It is important to note that the Girl Scouts use two bakeries to make their cookies, and each county troop usually picks one bakery supplier to get their cookies from. Both bakeries make vegan Thin Mints, but only ABC Bakery makes other varieties of vegan cookies. I am lucky to live in an area where the Girl Scout troop uses ABC Bakery, so I chowed down on Lemonades, Peanut Butter Patties, Thanks-a-Lot, Smore's, as well as Thin Mints.

10.) The Outsider by Stephen King - How does Stephen King do it and keep releasing these fantastic horror stories? It boggles my mind that he is consistently releasing quality content like The Outsider (available on Amazon), but I am so grateful he keeps releasing incredible horror. I finally read this Stephen King novel that was released last year, and I could not put it down! It starts off as a crime novel with a brutal child murder, but it eventually explores supernatural territory. I really dug this book, it was uncomfortable, terrifying, and my brain kept trying to solve the mystery and I was so intrigued where it finally went. It is even set in the same universe as the Mr. Mercedes book and subsequent books about Bill Hodges (including Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, End of Watch) and features a prominent character from those books, much to my delight.

What have you been loving this February?

25 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me When I Went Vegan

$

Every year I am overjoyed to find more and more people choosing the compassionate lifestyle by going vegan! And 2019 has already been declared the "Year of the Vegan" according to The Economist and veganism has been pegged as one of the fastest growing food "trends" (though we all know veganism isn't a trend or a fad, but a lifestyle change). In January, the UK-based charity Veganuary, which encourages and helps people go vegan in January and beyond, reported that they had over 250,000 participants sign up! This number of pledges exceeds those of the four previous years combined, which shows how many more people are interested in living more compassionately by going vegan.

This year alone I've already experienced many people reaching out and expressing their desire to go vegan and live more compassionately, which is so exciting to see! Since so many people were reaching out and I want to do everything possible to help and encourage them to go vegan, I thought I would offer some tips and tricks for going (and staying) vegan. These are things I wish someone had told me when I went vegan over 11 years ago. When I went vegan, I didn't know any other vegans and just kinda relied on the internet, books, documentaries and so on to inform myself and keep me dedicated to being vegan. Nowadays, there are so many resources out there, but I wanted to share some personal advice with you in hopes that it encourages those that want to explore veganism but maybe don't know where to start.

I have a lot of tips below, so at first it may seem overwhelming if you are just starting out, but I promise it gets easier! And it will be exciting as you start on your journey, even though you will go through many emotions and challenges. Just know there are so many others out there going through or who have been through the same feelings, discoveries, and challenges and you aren't alone! I am always here if you need any support, and there are so many great resources out there now for those going vegan. I'll cover more of this below, but I sincerely hope that these tips I'm sharing with you will assist in your own journey.

1.) How to start– If you're not sure where to start but want to go vegan, you can start slow, gradually adding new vegan foods to try before replacing non-vegan items. When you find alternatives you like, you can then stop buying the non-vegan counterparts. Or you could go with the week-by-week approach, where you replace one non-vegan item (dairy, eggs, meat, etc.) with vegan options. The key is to try a lot of different vegan options so you learn what you like. Alternatively, you can go vegan "cold Tofurky" (hehe). There is no right or wrong way, just be sure you have somewhat of a plan so you are getting the proper nutrients.

2.) Get excited to explore new foods– Ok, this is kind of a no-brainer, but don’t be afraid to try vegan food you've never had before. Seitan, quinoa, nutritional yeast (aka nooch), jackfruit were all foods I had never tried before going vegan (along with sooooo many more!). I feel like as vegans we get an array of incredible new foods we wouldn't have tried before going vegan. You'll be trying new grains, beans, seeds, fruits, and veggies and hopefully developing a broader and more compassionate palate. Plus, there is a vegan alternative to everything out there, from meat (my fave vegan meat companies include Upton's NaturalsBeyond Meat, Gardein, Tofurky, Field Roast, Good Catch Foods, but there are so many more) to cheese (vegan cheeses are exploding - try different ones until you find one you like! My faves include Miyoko's, Field Roast's Chao, Parmela's, Follow Your Heart) to yogurt (I like So Delicious, Daiya, Silk) to milk (there are so many non-dairy options, from oat to almond to soy to coconut to hazelnut to rice and beyond - try some out and find your favorite) to butter (I use Earth Balance and Miyoko's butter) to ice cream (my faves are So Delicious, NadaMoo! and Vixen Kitchen, along with the non-dairy vegan flavors launched by Target's brand as well as Ben and Jerry's vegan offerings!) to many more!

Accidentally vegan Halloween Oreos!

3.) You're probably already eating "accidentally" vegan foods– There are so many foods that you are already eating now that are accidentally vegan, like beans, rice, veggies, fruit, even Oreos! Check out these lists of "accidentally" vegan foods https://www.peta.org/living/food/accidentally-vegan/ and https://vegnews.com/2018/7/25-accidentally-vegan-snacks-that-you-can-find-at-a-convenience-store to get an idea of what you may already enjoy that are already vegan.

4.) Frequent vegan restaurants in your area– Find vegan or vegan-friendly restaurants near you using Yelp or HappyCow. If you're traveling, try to visit the local vegan restaurants (this is one of my favorite things to do while traveling!). No vegan restaurants in your area? No problem – just start going to your regular restaurants and ask if they have anything vegan or if they can make something special for you – sometimes this can lead them to add a permanent vegan dish to their menu!

5.) When dining out, don't be afraid to ask if something is vegan - Most places are familiar with the term, but if they look confused, clarify that this means no dairy (dairy-based milk, butter, cream, etc.), no eggs, no meat, no honey. Most places are always happy to check with the chef if they are unsure, and you can also ask to see ingredient lists. It may seem embarrassing at first, but trust me, it's worth it for peace of mind (and tummy). There is nothing worse than realizing your beans were cooked in lard or that the non-dairy creamer you just put in your coffee actually contains casein (more on this ingredient below).

6.) Watch out for sneaky non-vegan ingredients– There are some sneaky non-vegan ingredients that can slip into food, so educate yourself on these lesser-known animal-based ingredients. It can see overwhelming at first, but you will get the hang of avoiding animal ingredients and by-products in no time. Some sneaky animal ingredients include but aren't limited to: carmine/cochineal/carminic acid (crushed up bugs, used for red color,  usually in makeup but also in candy and some foods), L-cysteine (duck feathers, used as a dough conditioner in bagels), confectioner's glaze/shellac (crushed up bugs, usually in candy or sweets that give them a shiny appearance), albumin (egg whites, usually used in sweets), lanolin (from sheep's wool,  usually used in lotion or beauty products, but can sometimes be found in food), beeswax/bee pollen, casein/caseinate (milk protein, some "non-dairy" cheeses, creamers, etc. contain this), chitosan (from crustacean shells, used in skin-care products mainly), down (goose or duck feathers, usually used in pillows, comforters, jackets, etc.), gelatin, isinglass (from fish bladders, used in clarification of certain wines), lard, pepsin/rennet (from pigs and calves, used in cheeses and vitamins), ambergris/squalene/pristane (from sharks/whales, used in cosmetics), propolis (gathered by bees, used in toothpaste and cosmetics), royal jelly (from bees, used in cosmetics), silk (made by silkworms, which are boiled in their cocoons to get the silk), vitamin D3 (may come from animal sources, typically added to cereals, orange juice, etc.), whey (milk by-product, usually in protein powders, baked goods), omega-3 fatty acids (some come from fish, though others can be plant-based). The best way is to familiarize yourself with these ingredients and also download apps that you can use to scan products to tell you whether or not the ingredients are vegan.

7.) What those pesky allergen warnings mean– When reading labels, you'll encounter a lot of warnings on package that read: "May contain traces of egg, milk, etc." or "Processed on the same equipment as milk, eggs, shellfish, etc." DO NOT worry about these – it does not mean the food itself contains any non-vegan products, and if they do, they are in minuscule amounts. Most times it just means the product was made in the same building as non-vegan products. These warnings on food are mainly there to protect the companies’ butts in case anyone has an allergic reaction. So, unless you are highly allergic to the ingredients listed, you can brush off these statements. On the other hand, labels that state "contains milk, cheese, etc." are ones you should pay attention to.

8.) Don't get discouraged if you slip up and eat non-vegan food - This happens to all of us! You don't need to give up - just try again! Sometimes we make mistakes, and that is ok - no one is perfect. If you ate something with an ingredient you didn't know wasn't vegan, familiarize yourself with it so you can avoid it next time. If you got pressured into eating something non-vegan by family or friends (I've been there), just resolve to be stronger next time. And of course, the vegan's worst nightmare is eating a bite of non-vegan food that was served to you in a restaurant (this has happened to me and it is the worst!) - not much can be done about that, you can let the manager know if you're comfortable doing so, or just shrug it off and move on. It does happen, and it sucks (and is gross), but it's not the end of the world.

9.) Take a B12 supplement– If you eat a balanced vegan diet, this is the only supplement you still need to take, since B12 can no longer be found naturally in plant-based foods. You may want to research other vitamins as well to fit your lifestyle. I currently take Deva's B12 (I take this one), a multivitamin (this one), vitamin D (this one), and biotin (they have a vegan option at Trader Joe's I like, or try this one!).

10.) Use your local library as a resource to check out vegan cookbooks – Not sure which vegan cookbooks to get? Your local library is a treasure trove of vegan cookbooks! Check them out and think of it as a try-before-you-buy test drive. If you find some favorites you think you will use a lot, buy them from your local bookstore or Amazon. If you need some suggestions, here is my list for 13 Cookbooks for the Strange and Unusual! Some libraries even offer ebooks and other resources like vegan documentaries, too!

11.) Watch vegan documentaries, read vegan books, visit vegan blogs, listen to vegan podcasts– You can find many vegan documentaries online to watch for free (Dominion, Earthlings [warning: this is a really hard but important watch - you will bawl your eyes out], Called to Rescue, and so many others) and even streaming on Netflix or available on Amazon (Forks Over Knives, Cowspiracy, What the Health, Blackfish, and so many more - LiveKindly has a great list!) and these are also great because you can watch them with friends and family (and perhaps give them a nudge in the right direction). There are a wide-variety of vegan books from different voices, from global studies showing how beneficial a vegan diet can be to personal stories of how a former cowboy went vegan, to how vegan athletes train, to stories from animal rescuers and sanctuaries, and many more. You can find many of these at your local library, local bookstore, or on Amazon. Also vegan blogs are amazing free resources for learning more about veganism and trying new recipes as are vegan podcasts.

12.) Be patient with yourself – You'll make mistakes, and that is okay. There is a lot of learning to do, so continue to educate yourself, don't get burnt out, take small steps if needed, and don't give up. You will get there!

13.) Be patient with other people - You'll likely get a ton of questions about where you get your protein, why you decided to go vegan, etc., etc. You may not have all the answers (especially if you are newly vegan), and you can always let them know you are still learning if you don't know the answers. If they ask something you don't know the answer to, you might want to look it up for future knowledge. People will seem really pesky with their questions, and then may make a big show of saying how they could never go vegan because this or that...and while annoying, sometimes you just have to grin and bear it. People don't respond well to lectures, no matter how well-intentioned they are, and sometimes the best way to educate people about veganism is feeding them some delicious vegan food to show them that it IS enjoyable!

14.) Ignore the haters...– You just posted a beautiful photo of your dinner when a troll comes along and comments "bacon." Yup, we've all been there, and it can seem that the world is full of vegan-haters. You may even encounter some hostility towards your vegan lifestyle from friends and family. Yes, it is frustrating, but stay the course and stay true to yourself and what you believe in. You made the choice to go vegan for a reason, you don't owe an explanation to anyone (unless they are genuinely curious), and it is your life and you can be vegan if you want to!

15.) ...especially the vegans who are haters - With that said, there are also a lot of misguided vegans out there that like to attack other vegans. Yes, I know it seems weird, but it happens. Some vegans will call you out for eating Oreos because the sugar used to make them may have been processed with bone char (ah yes, all the fun facts you’ll learn as a vegan, like how some white sugar is processed with bone char to give it that bleached white color – this is becoming more uncommon, and to many isn’t that big of a deal, but there are some vegans that still avoid processed sugar), others will shame you for eating anything with palm oil (due to the deforestation some palm oil harvesting creates). It can all be very overwhelming, but these types of people can usually be ignored (unless they bring up a valid point – like when I ate Oreo Birthday Cake cookies until someone nicely pointed out that the sprinkles contain confectioner’s sugar, i.e. crushed up bugs). Again, be patient. We are all learning, we are all on different journeys, but we are all in it for the animals.

16.) Be a light - Being vegan can sometimes make you feel alone, isolated, and like the rest of the world doesn't understand. You may get upset, angry, and sad. It's important to remember how much good you are doing in the world by choosing compassion, how many lives you are saving, how much you are helping the environment and your own health. Be a shining light and be positive about veganism. Share with people how easy it is and how delicious it can be! People are attracted to positive attitudes and delicious food rather than being shamed about what they eat, so be a bright, guiding light so you can show people that veganism is the future.

17.) Veganism is not about perfection– When I first went vegan, I was really freaking out about avoiding anything that could contain bone-char processed sugar, palm oil, and a zillion other things, until someone pointed out that veganism is not about perfection or personal purity. We don’t live in a vegan world, and it is impossible to be 100% vegan (I mean, our car tires have animal by-products in them). The important thing is to do all that is reasonably possible to be vegan. We don’t have to drive ourselves crazy avoiding every little ingredient that may have been processed with animal products or may contain trace amounts of something or other. It all boils down to doing it for the animals, and the animals really aren’t gonna care if you eat an Oreo! Bottom line, don’t focus on personal purity or perfection, but should be about living our lives to avoid exploiting or harming animals.

18.) Veganism is more than just food– Once you reach a comfortable place with eating vegan food, you can begin veganizing other aspects of your life. Switch to vegan skin care, beauty, cosmetics and healthcare products. Swap out your house cleaners/soap/laundry detergent with more eco-friendly products from Method or Mrs. Meyers. Make sure your cosmetics and skin care products are vegan (Logical Harmony is a great resource for makeup and skin care recommendations and reviews, with extensive lists of vegan and cruelty-free brands). Swap out your shampoo, conditioner, and shower soap for vegan brands. Start using vegan toothpaste and vegan floss. You don’t have to replace everything at once, but slowly start to educate yourself on vegan brands so you can try new things and find new favorites! You can also decide if you want to get rid of any non-vegan (i.e. wool, silk, leather, fur, down, etc.) clothing/coats/shoes/belts/bags you may have or if you want to continue using them until they are worn out (both are perfectly fine options). If you decide to get rid of stuff, donate gently used items to secondhand shops, shelters, homeless outreach centers, etc. If you have non-vegan bedding like down blankets, down pillows, wool blankets, or fur coats or lambskin blankets, they can be donated to animal shelters.

19.) Stop frequenting zoos, aquariums, rodeos, petting zoos, circuses, or other animal prisons– I used to love zoos and aquariums, but ever since going vegan I realized these were prisons for animals taken against their will or bred in captivity for entertainment or exploitation. They are sad places where animals are confined to small, artificial environments that are no place for animals to live. While many claim that they actually "help" animals, this is all BS and a smokescreen they use to hide behind. The exception would be legit animal sanctuaries or rescues that care for injured, abandoned, or rescued animals (see below).

Brushing Linus the pig at my first visit to The Gentle Barn in
2013 (see more from this visit to the animal sanctuary HERE)!

20.) Visit an animal sanctuary – Visiting an animal sanctuary that has rescued farm animals from slaughter is one of the most rewarding and joyous experiences you'll have as a vegan, allowing you to connect with animals and see up close how amazing they really are. Do your research, some "sanctuaries" are shady AF, while others do so much selfless work for the animals. I love The Gentle Barn, Farm Sanctuary, Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, check out more on this list: https://www.vegan.com/sanctuaries/

21.) Subscribe to a vegan magazine– I adore VegNews, which is a beautiful magazine that features spreads on vegan issues, seasonal recipes, vegan advice columns, vegan travel, vegan products, and so many more fun features. They always have the best scoop on stuff! The magazine is available in print or digitally, and their website is also updated daily with vegan news! There are also several other publications you can check out - some you can even find at your local health food store in the check-out lanes.

22.) Try monthly vegan subscription boxes - If you want to try out vegan products but don't know where to start, a monthly vegan subscription box can be just the ticket! I like Vegan Cuts, who have snack boxes, makeup boxes, wellness boxes and more!

Art by Chiara Meloni of Chiaralascura

23.) Vegans come in all shapes and sizes– Veganism is for everyone and there isn't just one stereotypical vegan "look." You can be any age, any size, any shape, any race, any gender, etc. and be vegan. Basically anyone can be vegan, which is important to remember so we don't judge people on their vegan journey and definitely should not shame people for what they eat, how they look, etc. Everyone is different, but vegans have one common trait – compassion! And we should celebrate both our differences as well as our one big unifier.

24.) Surround yourself with like-minded people - It may help to join a vegan group on Facebook (I recommend Power to the Veg! - it's a closed group, so you'll have to request to be added, but it is a very safe, welcoming space for new vegans!), follow fellow vegans in your area (maybe even join a vegan meetup nearby - or start one!), pick some fun vegan Instagram accounts or Facebook pages to follow. It will help immensely to surround yourself with like-minded individuals who will inspire and encourage you! Of course, you can also follow more serious or educational accounts as well that will keep you informed on important issues.

25.) You’re not alone!– Veganism has exploded in the last few years, and that growth isn't going to stop anytime soon! With so many people going vegan, vegan options have improved immensely and are becoming more and more available every day. That means there are a ton of veg-curious people out there! So, if you ever have questions or need support, there are so many resources available online. You are never alone, and there are many people that have faced the same emotions, frustrations, fun discoveries, and challenges as you are. So hang in there, and if you face challenges, reach out online. I’m always happy to help, as is the global vegan community out there!

If you are looking for more valuable advice, check out more tips from Mercy for Animals, The Tree Kisser, VegNews, The Thriving Vegan, Serious Eats (though this article is from 2013 and is a little outdated, it still has some great advice), Choose Veg, and The Vegan RD!

If you have questions, need advice, or even are just looking to vent, I am always here to answer questions, or you can reach out to me on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook! If there is anything I can do to encourage you to try veganism, just let me know.

I hope these tips help you go vegan and stay vegan, and make your vegan journey a little easier!

Brrrrrr, this February has been cold, even here in Southern California. It even snowed in LA, which only happens once every 10 years or so! I know in other parts of the country it is much colder, especially with the polar vortex that made temperatures plummet in many states.

The chilly temperatures are a perfect excuse to bundle up at home in comfy, cozy clothes and watch some horror movies (which is what I've been doing all winter long!). I've rounded up some comfy clothes and accessories for horror fans that are great for lounging around the house, check them all out below:

Graveyard Goods Exorcist Sweatshirt and Sweatpants Bundle - This limited-edition set from Graveyard Goods has me gagging (haha) with excitement! They come out with new hoodies and sweatpants every month, so check back if you don't snag these!

Bethany Lowe Designs just unveiled their wholesale catalog for their vintage-inspired Halloween 2019 collections and it is so delightful to get a peek at Halloween goodies when it is still wintertime! Though these are only for wholesalers and aren't available for consumers yet, these designs are something to look forward to when they hit stores next fall.

Bethany Lowe Designs began in 1985 with the artist's vision of creating unique, original, vintage-style folk art and holiday designs for the wholesale industry. At that time, very few companies were creating this distinct style and look. Bethany Lowe Designs gained a following of collectors and admirers throughout the years, and in recent years the resurgence of the vintage folk-art style has led to even more spotlight on this brand, who showcases other artists' work as well.

The 2019 Halloween catalog offers us a glimpse into the whimsical artwork and decor of Bethany Lowe Designs, along with other artists like Chicken Lips and Johanna Parker! Some of the designs showcased are old favorites while others are boo-tiful new editions, but all of them will give you a burst of Halloween joy just be looking at them! Check out some snippets from the catalog below:

These monstrous plants are so adorable! A is "Prickly Pumpkin Plant,"
B is "Cheeky Pumpkin Perennial," and my favorite is C, "Froggy Fern!"

A Magic Moon

This haunted tree with little ghosties adorning it is everything!

There are so many boo-tiful garlands throughout the catalog, like this
"Monster" one!

Spooky fun! I need that little batty bucket and those nesting boxes!

Besides Halloween decor, there are a few pages of Dia de Los Muertos decor.

I adore this Pumpkinhead wall hanging! It would look
amazing over a doorway (and I would leave it up
year-round!!).

Serious circus vibes on this page! Love the black cats!

Obsessed with those pumpkin head ghosts!!

Chicken Lips by David H. Everett - his creations always put a smile on my face!

I've had my eye on that "Spooky" marquee for quite some time!

I love Johanna Parker's designs! This is just a look at a few in this catalog.

That witchy black cat called "Scaredy Cat Ghoul" in the listing is so adorable!

I adore these poison apple ornaments from LeeAnn Kress!

More circus-inspired decor! Love the Spooky boxes and that little pumpkin
head ringmaster!

That circus skeleton though! How cute are they?!

The Great Haunted Moon and Stars Show tin sign is gorgeous, and that
cat pillow and cat with accordion definitely caught my eye.

How happy do those Halloweenie items make you? Which ones are your faves?

There are so many more items on there I didn't share here on the Halloween 2019 Bethany Lowe Designs catalog on their website!

For the past few years, horror and Halloween enthusiasts near and far have traveled to meet where all kindred spirits converge, at the "Spook Show", an annual event conjured up by the Halloween Club in La Mirada, California. This is one of my favorite springtime events, especially since we get to celebrate Halloween in April! It's full of incredible vendors, killer deals, costumed attendees, Halloween-themed musical acts and performers, and so much fun! If you want to see some of the fearsome fun I've had there in past years, check out the posts from 2018, 2017, 2016, and 2015!

More info on this year's event, coming up next month, below:

Coming on its 7th Annual Celebration next month on April 6th, 2019, Spook Show started with a simple mission: facilitate an outdoor-gathering where local Southern Californian businesses and fellow enthusiasts may come share their penchant for the macabre. The Spook Show festival was tightly embraced, and a word-of-mouth-like-sharing-spell spread in alerting fellow ghouls and freaks to come recreate, sell, exhibit, shop, taste, listen, frolic and celebrate the unique culture inspired by the ancient Halloween tradition.

The 2019 spring Halloween festival will feature over 100 curated local vendors, artists, collectors, teachers, spook makers, spookipreneurs, and musicians for like-minded Halloween enthusiasts. Halloween Club will also host their biggest sale event on 1000s of costumes, accessories and decorations.

Many vendors have already been confirmed, including some of my favorites, including artist Meagan Meli who will be traveling all the way from New York, as well as local favorites Bat in Your Belfry, Black Magic Cakery, Black Willow Gallery, Bloodbath, Demonic Pinfestation, Dulce Calaveritas, Frightwares, KMSxCo, Monster Posse, Save the Panduhs, TeeNoEvil, and many, many more!

This year, special guests will also be at the event. Just announced was Philip Friedman, most well-known with horror fans as the actor who played the terrifying "Old Woman" in the first Insidious film, who will be on-hand to sign autographs and take photographs with attendees.

Halloween Club's 7th Annual Spook Show will be held April 6th, 2019 12-7pm at the Halloween Club located at 14447 Firestone Boulevard in La Mirada, CA 90638. Entry is free, but you must reserve your entry tickets HERE!

For more info, including vendors, parking, FAQ, and more, visit the Halloween Club's Spook Show website!

Hope to scare you there!

A teaser trailer for the upcoming horror film Candy Cornpremiered on Dread Central and has given us a treat to look forward to this Halloween! This is Josh Hasty's next film after his behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of Rob Zombie's 31. I have been looking forward to Candy Corn for quite some time and I am excited to finally get a peek at it! The film's ridiculously gorgeous poster (designed by Fright Rag's Justin Osbourne) was also unveiled, which you can see above. With this as well as the teaser trailer (which you can view below), I am even more excited to see this film, which we will hopefully get to see this year around the Halloween season. Check out the teaser and more info on the film below:

Horror film icons, Courtney Gains (Children of the Corn, The 'Burbs), PJ Soles (John Carpenter's Halloween, Carrie), Tony Todd (Candyman, The Crow, Final Destination), and newcomer Pancho Moler (Rob Zombie's 31, From Hell, American Horror Story), join the previously announced cast: Sky Elobar, Caleb Thomas, Madison Russ, Cy Creamer, Jimothy Beckholt, Nate Chaney, Patrick Ryan, Justin Mabry, Matt O'Neill, and Jaime Gallagher to round-out the full cast announcement of Candy Corn.

The suspense thriller, Candy Corn, is written, directed, and produced by auteur filmmaker, Josh Hasty (director of In Hell Everybody Loves Popcorn and the acclaimed feature length documentary on the making of Rob Zombie's 31).

The film is produced by Courtney Gains alongside Matt O’Neill and executive produced by Tony Todd, James Claeys (of Local Boogeyman Productions), Justin Mabry (of Trick or Treat Studios), Lindsey Kowalski, Ben Scrivens (of Fright Rags), Johnny Cooper, Nick Ford, and Brandon Cooper.  Candy Corn is the first production financed by Local Boogeyman Productions.

Synopsis: It's the eve of Halloween in Grove Hill, Ohio. A traveling carnival is in town for the weekend and local outcast, Jacob Atkins, has been hired as one of the freaks in the event's main attraction, "Dr.Death's Side Show Spook House Spectacular." Meanwhile, a group of local bullies are planning their annual public hazing of Jacob, but this year things go too far.

Comprising the make-up effects team includes Justin Mabry (sculptor of the Michael Myers mask in 2018's Halloween and co-owner of Trick or Treat Studios), Chris Gallaher (Vice, Fear the Walking Dead, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Passion of the Christ) and Erik Porn (Pineapple Express, Scream Queens, American Horror Story). Additional accredited effects team includes Russ Lukich (Hellboy 1 and 2, Jurassic Park III, Blade: Trinity) and Emmy nominee Dave Hartman (Transformers: Prime, Bubba Ho-Tep, Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny). New Vegan Finds From Expo West I'm Dying To Try

Natural Products Expo West 2019 occurred last week here in Orange County, and while I didn't attend, I have been drooling over the photos fellow vegans have shared of hot new vegan products that dominated the Expo! It is incredible how more and more exciting vegan items are popping up all over the place, and many of them debut at Expo West, where companies exhibit their products in hopes that buyers from grocery stores will decide to stock them on their shelves, investors will help support their expansion, and to generate buzz.

In past years (check out my past coverage of the event HERE), there has been a significant demand for new vegan products and more and more companies with vegan options are showcasing their products at Expo West. This year, veganism has really exploded at Expo West, and I've seen so many incredible new food items that I can't wait to get my claws on! I've collected some of the highlights from others' Instagram posts (big shout-out to all attendees who shared their photos with the world, and an extra special thank you to the VegNews team for their incredibly comprehensive coverage!), check out the exciting new vegan products from Expo West I'm dying to get my claws on:

Pringles for vegans! How awesome do these new chips from Vegan Robs look?!
As a fan of many of their healthier snack products, I am intrigued by these
and hope they come to market soon.

Nom! Can't wait to try these vegan chick'n nuggets from Alpha Foods! These
received rave reviews at Expo, and I can't wait to sink my fangs into these
chickenless nuggets.

Wow, look at these European-style soft cheeses and butter from Wild Brine!
People who tried these at Expo have been raving about the funky cheese
taste and delicious butter. These were the hit of the show and I can't
wait to try them once they make their way to grocery stores.

Hello - new vegan Cheddar Sour Cream chips from Beanfields! I adore all their
current flavors, and can't wait to snack on this (and several other) new flavors
that debuted at Expo.

As an Italian, I am EXTREMELY excited by these deli slices from Good and Green!
Besides the carpaccio, there will also be a prosciutto product as well!

Finally, some vegan French Onion dip from Good Karma! They are also coming
out with a Ranch dip and Sour Cream! I have been waiting for a good vegan dip
option to be released, and this looks like it might be it!

Can't wait to try these new breakfast bowls from Gardein - they have a few
different flavors but this one is the one I have my eye on.

I'm squealing over these salty, bacon-flavored chips made from mushrooms by
Outstanding Foods! They won a best of show award from VegNews, and I
have heard multiple people raving about them (plus their piggy mascot
is adorable), so I cannot wait for these.

Beyond Meat debuted their new Beyond Beef, vegan ground beef, and people have
been going wild over it! Can't wait for this to hit stores soon so I can make
meatballs, sloppy Joe's, tacos, and whatever else I dream up.

OMG these Revele Whipped Vegan Gelato Bars look so good! They debuted a
variety of vegan options, and I have my eye on the strawberry. Not only are
they vegan, but they are also calorie-conscious if you are into that kinda thing.

New vegan cheesecake from Tofurky? Be still my heart!!! These are little mini
cheesecakes with a crumbly crust - they can't come to stores fast enough!

Sweet Earth Foods unleashed a new juicy vegan burger! I'm curious as to how it
stacks up against the Beyond and Impossible burgers, but I'm a fan of Sweet
Earth's vegan offerings so I have high hopes for this one.

I am a big fan of Parmela Creamery's vegan cheeses (go try them if you haven't -
their cheddar slices complete my Beyond Burgers!), so I am all in for this new
vegan ravioli, made with their ricotta cheese.

I love hazelnut anything, and I am so stoked for this spread by Wild Friends! There
are several other vegan "Nutella" offerings out there, but so far I haven't found
one I like. I'm hoping this one changes that.

I am a sucker for birthday cake flavored everything (and sprinkles)! Drooling
over these chocolate-covered cookie dough bites by Better Bites Bakery.

One of my favorite companies, Upton's Naturals, released a new vegan jerky in
several mouth-watering flavors! I can't wait to sink my fangs into the
Pineapple Pink Peppercorn flavor!

What vegan products are you most looking forward to?

The United States Postal Service announced several new stamp additions to their 2019 lineup, including these gorgeous "Spooky Silhouettes" Halloween stamps that we can expect to see this autumn! These are so perfect for mailing Halloween cards (and I need them for my annual Halloween card swap!) and I like to buy extras so I can use them year-round for mail!

Check out the description for these spooky Halloween stamps from the USPS site below:

Spooky Silhouettes

Halloween has long been a holiday that lets us delight in the things that scare us. With the approach of autumn, Spooky Silhouettes stamps will offer fun, frightful scenes that symbolize this annual celebration. Four stamps feature digital illustrations in which traditional Halloween motifs are rendered as black silhouettes in eerily backlit windows. Artist Tyler Lang created the artwork. Art Director Greg Breeding designed the stamps.

These aren't available for purchase yet, but we can expect to see them later this year closer to autumn.

10 More Irish Horror Films to Watch For St. Patrick's Day

$
0
0

A few years back I shared a list of incredible Irish horror movies that weren't Leprechaun (though, let's be honest, we all have a special love in our horror hearts for that film franchise) and offered something new. All those horror film recommendations still stand today, but after watching a newly released horror film The Hole in the Ground, I knew there were other modern Irish horror films that deserved a watch, too!

With St. Patrick's Day being celebrated this weekend, I thought this would be a great time to highlight 10 more Irish horror films you should watch. These vary from films set in Ireland, filmed in Ireland, Irish-directed movies, movies produced by Irish companies, etc. These films vary in tone from boisterous to moody to disturbing to gory, so there should be enough variety for everyone! Also, don't forget to check out my previous top 10 list of Irish horror for more recommendations.

Check out my picks for 10 more Irish horror films to watch for St. Patrick's Day below:

The Hole in the Ground (2019) - A mother and son move to a home at the edge of a forest in Ireland to start fresh. While walking in the forest they discover a gigantic sink hole. During the night, the young son goes missing, and when he returns the mom starts to suspect her son never returned at all. I watched this recently and enjoyed it. It has some beautifully foreboding cinematography and I love stories about changelings (though I wish it had gone more into the lore of these creatures). This is definitely worth checking out if you are looking for a new Irish horror film to watch.

Let Us Prey (2014) - Co-funded by the Irish Film Board and directed by Brian O'Malley (who has another film later in this list) and written by Fiona Watson and David Cairns, this horror film is about a rookie cop (played by the brilliant Pollyanna McIntosh) who is starting her first night shift in a rural police station manned by bitter, forgotten cops. When a mysterious stranger (Liam Cunningham from Game of Thrones) arrives, he manages to insidiously take over the minds and souls of everyone inside. I enjoyed this film, it really ramps up the tension and horror with such wicked glee!

The Cured (2017) - Filmed and set in Ireland, this film is about the cure for the disease that turns people into zombies. The government tries to re-integrate the once-infected zombies info normal society, but they are in turn discriminated against by society and their own families, causing unrest. This film stars Ellen Page and looks like a unique twist on the zombie genre, but I actually haven't had a chance to see it yet.

Dead Meat (2004) - In Irish filmmaker Conor McMahon's feature debut, Mad Cow disease mutates and infects inhabitants across the Irish countryside, turning them into flesh-eating zombies. This low-budget film is your standard violent zombie flick with bit of gory comedy thrown in. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but it a fun bucket o' guts if you're a zombie fan! And McMahon would go on to direct another horror film further down this list...

A Dark Song (2017) - Filmed in Ireland, this movie tells the tale of a grieving mother despairing over the tragic loss of her murdered son. Desperate to make contact with the boy she has lost, she hires an occult expert and rents an isolated house to perform a series of dark and forbidden rituals that push her to her physical and psychological breaking point. This movie was one of my favorites in 2017, it is a creepy slow burn that keeps you guessing. The ending had a lot of people divided, but I thought it was different in a good way. You can catch it streaming on Netflix.

From the Dark (2015) - Another film by director Conor McMahon, this one is about a couple on a trip through the Irish countryside. When their car breaks down, they are hunted by a creature who only attacks in the dark. This was a tense movie and I loved the opening scenes of a farmer unearthing the creature. I also liked how the girlfriend became a kick-ass heroine!

The Lodgers (2017) - In rural Ireland in the 1920's, twins Rachel and Edward share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Each night, the property becomes the domain of a sinister presence which enforces three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight; they may not permit an outsider past the threshold; if one attempts to escape, the life of the other is placed in jeopardy. When troubled war veteran Sean returns to the nearby village, he is immediately drawn to the mysterious Rachel, who in turn begins to break the rules. The consequences pull Rachel into a deadly confrontation with her brother - and with the curse that haunts them. This atmospheric gothic horror film is gorgeous and was filmed on-location at one of the most haunted houses in Ireland, Loftus Hall. I loved the aesthetic of the film, but was a bit let down by where it finally went. Still, it's worth a watch and is available to stream on Netflix.

Stitches (2012) - Co-produced by the Irish Film Board and the third film on this list directed by Conor McMahon, this sarcastic and dark horror comedy is about Stitches the clown who is killed in a party mishap after being ridiculed by kids. He then returns from the grave to seek revenge on the people responsible. You can find this one streaming on Netflix.

Nails (2017) - This Irish co-production is about a paralyzed woman desperately tries to get her family and doctors to believe that she is being terrorized by a malevolent presence in her hospital room. I didn't really care much for this movie, but I do think the character design of "Nails" is pretty terrifying and I appreciate the eerie atmosphere of the hospital. You can check it out on Netflix streaming.

The Devil's Doorway (2018) - Directed by Aislinn Clarke, this found footage film focuses on two priests who investigate a statue of St. Mary in a Magdalene weeping blood in a remote Catholic home for "immoral" women in 1960s Northern Ireland. They use 16mm film cameras to record their findings to determine if this is in fact a miracle or a hoax, but come to uncover something far more sinister.

BONUS: Leprechaun Returns (2019) - Picking up 25 years after the first film, the Leprechaun returns when a group of girls unwillingly awaken him, when they tear down a cabin so that they can build a new sorority house. No Warwick Davis in this installment, as Linden Porco assumes the Leprechaun role, but I hear it is still a fun, gory romp. This film will air St. Patrick's Day on the SyFy network! Who's gonna be watching?!

Fund the Future of Fashion With Legends and Vibes

I am not the most fashionable person by any means. I prefer my look to be like the vampires from What We Do in the Shadows, "dead but delicious." Or rather, distressed, tattered black clothing like I just rolled out of a grave (so maybe not as delicious as I'd envisioned!).

Nevertheless, I am always looking for new, eco-friendly clothing brands that are vegan and ethically conscious. I'm glad to say that a new brand, Legends and Vibes, has caught my eye, and they are currently fundraising to make all our fashion dreams come true!

Legend and Vibes was founded with the vision of being the first vegan and sustainably sourced fashion brand to be available in stores nationwide. They use all-vegan, organic (when possible), and recycled or repurposed materials to make their stylish pieces, including tees, tanks, dresses, shorts, rompers, pants, jackets, and dresses. They are woman-owned and operated, committed to inspire change, lead a movement, and make vegan fashion the future.

I love their attitude, their commitment to sustainability, and designs (they just need a few more black pieces!). Please visit their Kickstarter to help fund this eco-conscious vegan brand, and in return you will receive perks, including t-shirts, totes, and parts of their sophisticated, edgy, and feminine clothing collection.

Here are some reminders/tips for the event:
  • Slather on the sunblock and wear loose clothing
  • Leave your beloved pets at home (no dogs or other animals allowed at the event no matter what due to city health codes, plus it gets too hot and crowded for pets)
  • Stash those strollers - it gets too congested to navigate the event with a stroller
  • Bring reusable utensils, straws, water bottles (there will be water stations available)
  • Bring tupperware, reusable baggies, etc. so you can take some yummy treats home with you!
  • Bring a tote bag so you can have a place to stash all the goodies you want to take home
  • Parking can be a huge pain in the butt - try to get there early so you don't have to park far away. Better yet, carpool, use public transport, or use Lyft/Uber to get to the event.
  • Mystic Museum/Bearded Lady Vintage, plus Halloweentown and more awesome stores are just a short drive away, so make a day/weekend of it!
  • Bring your friends and appetites to this rad event!

Plant Fest at Tanaka Farms - Spring 2019 Edition this Sunday

One of my favorite events is Plant Fest, held a few times a year at Tanaka Farms. It is a wonderful gathering of vegan food and product vendors, plus cooking demos, yoga, farm tours, games and crafts for the kiddos, and such a fun vibe! I love going and shopping all the vendors, grabbing some great food, watching some cooking demos and just hanging out with good friends.

I'm thrilled that Plant Fest is returning on Sunday, March 31st from 10 AM to 4 PM. There is plenty of free parking and it is a real treat to spend the day on a working farm right in Orange County! Admission to the farm is $4 and allows you access to wander the farm and attend Plant Fest. Plus, a portion of all sales will be donated to an animal sanctuary that will be chosen by the vendors. Check out the incredible vendors below!

I simply adore this mini vegan festival and hope you can join me there! Come to do some vegan shopping in the marketplace, featuring vendors selling food, beauty, makeup, and so many more vegan products, visit the farm's rescue flock, take photos around the farm, enjoy the spring weather, and of course eat some delicious vegan food!

For more info and to RSVP to the event, check out the event page on Facebook!

Stay spooky and see you on the farm!

Halloween Horror Nights Announces Return of Stranger Things Maze

The first official maze announcement for Halloween Horror Nights 2019 has dropped and I'm ecstatic to report it will be a continuation of the Stranger Things maze from last year! Last year the maze took us through season one of the Netflix series, and it was so detailed and fun to walk through! This year, the maze will cover seasons two and three, so I'm excited for a whole new maze experience! Check out the teaser video plus more details from the official press release below:

Universal City, CA, Orlando, Fla., March 27, 2019 – Netflix's supernatural thriller, Stranger Things returns to Halloween Horror Nights 2019 at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort, debuting all-new mazes inspired by seasons 2 and 3 of the critically-acclaimed series.

This year's chilling mazes pick up where last year's mazes left off, continuing the suspenseful storyline where a predatory entity terrorizes the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, and delving even further into the parallel universe, referred to as the Upside Down.

The mazes on both coasts will also parallel the hit show as it leaps forward to 1985, taking guests on a terrifying excursion through portions of Stranger Things 3, which begins streaming July 4 on Netflix.

As with the previous mazes, Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort are partnering with Netflix and the creators and executive producers of Stranger Things to create authentic representations of the blockbuster series.

Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights is the ultimate Halloween event. For more than 25 years, guests from around the world have visited Halloween Horror Nights to become victims inside their own horror film. Multiple movie-quality mazes based on iconic horror television shows, films and original stories come to life season after season. And, the streets of each park's event are transformed into highly-themed scare zones where menacing scare-actors lunge from every darkened corner.

Halloween Horror Nights begins Friday, September 6 in Orlando and on Friday, September 13 in Hollywood. Additional details about the events will be revealed soon. Limited time ticket offers and vacation packages for Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights are on sale now. For more information about Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort, visit www.HalloweenHorrorNights.com.

10 Things I'm Loving This March

$

Hi fiends, hope you are having a spooktacular March! Believe it or not, I've been enjoying a bunch of Halloween-related stuff this month! It feels like Springoween! The month, I went to a haunted house, saw a great horror movie, drooled over some new Halloween stamps that are coming out later this year, scored some amazing new artwork, subscribed to a rad Halloween membership club, and so much more.

As I've been doing on a monthly basis with these "ten things" posts, I'm sharing 10 items I'm loving this month. This practice encourages me to be grateful for the little (and big) things in my life and also give me a chance to share some cool things with you!

See the 10 Things I'm Loving This March below:

1.) New Halloween stamps - I am over the moon that the USPS will be releasing some gorgeous new Halloween stamps this year! How absolutely gorgeous are these?! I cannot wait to stock up one these and use them for sending out Halloween cards. These aren't out yet, but I expect them to hit stores in late summer. I love all of the four designs, but especially adore the bats and black cat! Which one is your favorite?

2.)Us- I saw Us this past weekend and it absolutely thrilled me. I don't agree with some of the hype surrounding it calling it one of the scariest movies ever or the best horror movie of all time, but I really enjoyed its unique story and it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat for its running time. I love how original it was, it's creepy moments, and also the comedy that was peppered throughout. I also liked how it addresses social issues and how there is so much deeper commentary if you choose to dig into its symbolism and story - or you could just watch it at surface level and still enjoy its eerie horror story. After watching it, I found as many horror podcasts to listen to about it and as many articles discussing the film - and there was so much I missed on my first viewing, but now I can appreciate the film even more as I read up on the social commentary, hidden Easter eggs, and other things I missed on my first watch. It makes me excited to re-watch it! I highly recommend it if you haven't already seen it, just try to go in as blind as possible and pay no attention to the hype to keep your expectations in check.

3.) Starbucks vegan Frappuccino - I finally got to try the new almond milk-based bottle Frappuccino (available at convenience stores, Target, and grocery stores) and was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was! When I was in high school, I lived off of Frappuccinos and made my parents buy it by the case! Drinking it was like liquid nostalgia! I got the almond milk mocha flavor, but they also have a vanilla almond milk flavor.

4.) Reign of Terror Haunted House - Every spring, the Reign of Terror Haunted House in Thousand Oaks opens their doors for a one-night only event and this year I finally made it! It was my first time ever at this haunted house and I was so impressed by it! Everything from the incredible set designs to the scare actors to the special FX completely charmed me! The crowd control was perfect and they only let groups of eight to ten in at a time, so at times I was the only one walking through a room and getting spooked! My favorite scare was when a creature with red eyes dropped from the ceiling! So cool!! Anyways, they will be back for the Halloween season, so definitely put them on your must-haunt list!

5.) Lush's Rose Jam Shower Gel - This isn't a new product by any means, but it is the first time I tried this scent and I can't believe I waited this long! It is absolutely delightful and its fresh floral scent reminds me of walking in a rose garden on a sunny spring day. Besides the scent of rose, it is also scented with lemon, vanilla, goji berry juice and conditions skin with nourishing argan oil. I've loved using this in the shower and then following it up with Ro's Argan body conditioner so my day comes up roses.

6.) New vegan products debuting at Expo West - I didn't attend Natural Products Expo West this year, but I am sure looking forward to trying all the new mouth-watering and innovative vegan food products that debuted there. I'm hoping they hit stores soon so I can get my hands on new vegan cheeses, chips, chick'n nuggets, deli slices, dips, breakfast bowls, ice cream, burgers, pasta, jerky, and so much more!

7.) Focus on fitness - I have been looking for a new fitness program for a while, and after seeing the results of the Beachbody program from a friend, I signed up for the program with her as my trainer. I completed the 21 Day Fix, where I worked out for 21 days straight from home and followed a meal plan. I'm gonna stick with the program and repeat the 21 Day Fix for a few more months, but I've already had more energy, feel better and have gotten stronger. I've had a few setbacks, but my trainer has been so supportive (she even has a Facebook group where she shares tips and offers a safe space for everyone to chat about their progress and struggles) that I'm gonna keep it up!

8.) Egypt candle from Burke and Hare - I missed ordering this candle from Burke and Hare the first time, but luckily they restocked it and I was able to finally get my claws on it! It smells like fresh linen and I absolutely love it! I have been burning this all month (while trying to savor it as much as possible) and it is the perfect fresh, spring scent. I also got the October candle since I'm missing fall something fierce, and two new scents, Salem and With Sympathy, all of which I love as well!

9.) The Order of the Thinned Veil - 2019 membership packages for The Order of the Thinned Veil went live this month, and they include some incredible Halloween goodies and artwork that get shipped to you throughout the year. I love this subscription box, it is like getting a taste of Halloween in late spring/early summer (depending on the membership tier you choose).

10.) Mikey Carrasco and Becky Munich artwork - I was lucky enough to get another piece of Becky Munich's phenomenal artwork, another vampire bride of her's for my collection! She is so beautiful! And I was stunned when Mikey Carrasco sent me one of his incredible "Everything Hurts" prints - I cannot wait to frame this gorgeous vision of Lydia Deetz! Plus, I received this lovely vintage Trick or Treat tin from theghostinyoushop (go check him out, he has some really fantastic art and buttons!).

    What's in My Spooky Purse

Hello lovelies! Confession: I am obsessed with posts showing what is in people's purses/fridges/etc. It is so much fun to get a peek at what people use everyday and seeing how they live day-to-day. And I don't mean just celebrities, I mean like regular people like you and I, especially if they have a spooky or vegan (or both!) aesthetic. Plus, this is a wonderful way to discover new products, bond over similar items and styles, and just get more of an insight into someone else's habits and style!

Ever since my ghoulfriend-in-crime Miranda from Spooky Little Halloween shared what was in her purse, I've been wanting to share what's in mine! I figured now that we are going into spring it would be the perfect time to clean out my purse and share what's been lurking within. I've decided to omit any necessities like my phone, wallet, keys, etc. because everyone has those. Though I do love mine so I've include a photo of them at the end!

Check out what is lurking in my spooky purse below:

Love Pain and Stitches Batty purse - I have a few Love Pain and Stitches' bags, but this is my "off-season" bag (i.e. the one I use most when it's not Halloween season), featuring a black and purple bat design. I absolutely love this bag, it is roomy enough to fit all my essentials, which I'll talk about below!

Halloween tissues - These are so great to have on-hand for the sniffles, mopping up makeup meltdowns, or for small spills. I stock up on spooky tissues during the Halloween season so I can always have a pack in my purse year-round.

Lavender hand sanitizer - I love this travel size, TSA-approved, organic, and cruelty-free hand sanitizer by EO, which I take with me everywhere. The soothing lavender scent is an added bonus that smells so nice. I also love how this doesn't dry out my hands, doesn't leave them greasy or slimy, and is made with organic, natural ingredients.

Roll-on perfume - I LOVE travel-size roll-on perfumes, and I always have a few different varieties in my purse. I swap them out frequently depending on the season and my mood. Right now, I've been loving Tulip Perfume's Lemon Sugar and All Hallow's Eve by Seance Perfumes.

Black Moon lipstick - I think I have over 20 lipsticks from Black Moon Cosmetics. They are truly the only lipsticks I use anymore (besides lip balm) since they have incredible colors, are vegan and cruelty-free, stay put for hours and hours, and don't dry out my lips. Right now I'm obsessed with "Gloom," a gorgeous nude I can wear to work as well as out (on a rare occasion when I leave the house).

Fan - I am almost always hot, so I've taken to carrying around a fan with me to use to cool off. I love my pumpkin-shaped one that was gifted to me, but I also have several other fans I swap out from time to time (I love the new ones they have at Sourpuss Clothing!). Whether I'm standing in line, at a concert, in my car, while at the store, at the theater, or out and about, I can always pull out my fan and get immediate relief from heat with a few waves of my fan.

Hurraw lip balm - I would be lost without Hurraw's vegan and cruelty-free lip balm! I always have a few varieties in my purse (as well as at work, on my nightstand, in the living room, in my dresser, etc., etc.!) to choose from. It is my favorite lip balm and I find that it moisturizes and nourishes my lips like no other! I tend to have dry lips, but using Hurraw keeps them feeling soft and smooth for hours. My favorite flavors include Almond, Earl Grey, and Green Tea.

Notebook - I am a visual person, so I love writing down lists, ideas, etc. I keep at least one small notebook in my purse at all times, and this particular one by Meagan Meli is one of my absolute favorites. The vintage-Halloween theme gets me inspired for the best holiday and I'm using it for some epic Halloween planning!

ELF blotting papers - These have been a lifesaver for my oily skin and I always carry them with me for a quick fix throughout the day. They are inexpensive (I get them at Target) and are so invaluable to me - I use these every day!

Spooky Vegan business cards - You never know who you might run into, so I always keep a stack of Spooky Vegan business cards in my purse at all times. They are great for introducing people to my spooky blog and life.

Sunglasses - I rarely go outside without wearing sunglasses, even in cloudy weather. My eyes are pretty sensitive and bright sunlight bothers me, so these are a must! I don't have any fancy sunglasses, these are a $20 black pair from Target.

PUR gum - Chewing gum relieves stress for me, especially when I'm driving, so I love having PUR gum in my purse wherever I go. It also comes in handy after drinking cold brew so I'm not stuck with coffee breath, haha.

The bare essentials - Of course, I always have my phone, wallet, and keys in my purse as well, and they are all adorned spookily! My phone case features a scene from the Haunted Mansion, my wallet is red with a skull motif, and my keychain lanyard has pumpkins all over it.

What is in your spooky purse?
