Ghosts in the graveyard

Just one week to go until the best day of the year!! Are you seeking to invoke the spirits on Halloween but need a little otherworldly help to set the mood? Look no further than these haunting inspirations for ghostly decor that will surely entice apparitions and party guests alike to attend your spooky soiree.

Black and white makes a bold statement, and I love the ghostly
white pumpkin and tree centerpieces and how they are
juxtaposed against the black table and place settings.

Having your guests dine by candlelight evokes a haunted aura.

Lacy white tablecloths, cobwebs and gauzy white
accents give your home an ethereal feel.

Decaying curtains can add a haunted house feel to your
decor, and you can learn how to make these moth-eaten
curtainsfrom Martha Stewart's site!

Go for the classic haunted house look and drape white sheets over furniture,
then add cobwebs! Traditional but effective!

Pumpkins make dreadful sunny days bearable.

When the lovely ladies at Queen of the Track asked me to do a guest post on their online zine, I was thrilled! I absolutely adore the content of their blog, especially their Halloween series, so I was more than happy to contribute!

Since they are based in the UK, I thought it would be fun to write about how I celebrate Halloween in Southern California even though I have to suffer through cruel sunny days (it's gross, trust me) and there is no fall foliage whatsoever (damn you, palm trees!). Still, I have some tricks and treats that help me invoke the Halloween spirit despite the uncooperative weather/location - and you can read all about them over at Queen of the Track HERE!

After reading, you should check out the rest of their site, including some truly amazing articles on horror films and novels, female villains, and my personal favorite at the moment, poems based on Final Girls in horror movies by Amy Roberts! Read more here!

Pretty sure it is my favorite new site, and I am just so happy and humbled they asked me to guest blog! Please give them a look and a follow on TumblrFacebook, and Twitter!

31 Days of Halloween: Favorite Haunted House and Ghost Movies

I love a good ghost movie, and the ghost/haunted house story is one of my favorite horror genres! I love the atmosphere of most ghost stories, the unseen or barely seen ghosts that represent the unknown, and I love how classic haunted house/ghost stories feel. I’m not a fan of the cheap jump scare that some crappy horror movies use, but I adore when ghost stories are done right. These are subtly scary, and cause dread to slowly creep up on you until you are on the edge of your seat and the slightest noise makes the hair on the back of your neck stand straight up. Even better, they make you question every creak you hear long after finishing the movie.

Since I've been focusing a lot on ghosts during this year’s countdown, I wanted to share some of my favorite spooky ghost movies with you. This is by no means a comprehensive list, and there are so many great ones I’m missing, but the ones I chose really gave me a sense of unease when I first watched them, a tingling terror I hope you get to experience, too!

Carnival of Souls (1962) – This exquisite gem is still disorienting and terrifying to this day. The hallucinogenic atmosphere, creepy music, menacing ghosts, and abandoned carnival location make for some truly memorable visuals!

The Shining (1980) – The Stanley Hotel is haunted with all sorts of frightening spirits, all who seem to want the Torrance family to stay with them forever and ever. It isn't the most traditional of ghost stories, and definitely has a lot more going on than just ghostly hauntings, but the spirits plaguing the main characters of the film certainly are frightening!

The Devil’s Backbone (2001) – Directed by Guillermo del Toro, this melancholy ghost story set in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War and is told though the eyes of a child. It is both a heartfelt coming-of-age story and chilling ghost story.

The Pact (2012) - One of the newer films on this list, but even after watching it once I knew this was a spine-tingling classic! This film builds dread upon dread with subtle scares, but after watching you won't want to be anywhere alone.

The Haunting (1963) – Based on Shirley Jackson’s novel, this classic haunted house tale relies on ominous sounds and a foreboding atmosphere to get your (and the characters’) heart thumping.

Poltergeist (1982) – Like every kid, this film freaked me out! It affected me so much that I would always question if new houses/developments around town were being built on Indian burial grounds. And after watching, mundane things like clowns or a TVs suddenly became malicious.

Ju-On (2002) - When I first saw this movie I was so scared of the creepy noises the angry spirit makes! I remember watching it all alone one night and having just awful nightmares of creepy little boys, cats and long-haired ladies. It was one of the first Asian horror movies I was exposed to, and after being so scared by this one I was hooked!

Session 9 (2001) - The terror that creeps up on you watching this movie is so subtle that you almost don't even notice it until the pounding of your heart overwhelms the quiet horror unfolding on-screen. Definitely one of my favorite modern ghost stories with the wonderfully eerie atmosphere of a mental hospital making the perfect backdrop.

The Legend of Hell House (1973) – I really love this film, based on the novel “Hell House” by Richard Matheson (who also wrote the screenplay for the movie). The oppressive house was represented beautifully in the film, and I like how scientific ghost hunting equipment is combined with more traditional ghost investigation techniques like séances.

Lady in White (1988) – I can't think of a better ghost movie to watch around Halloween! It is set during Halloween and has a wonderfully nostalgic feel, plus a great supernatural mystery that we explore with the young protagonist.

Tale of Two Sisters (2003) – This gorgeous ghost story is another favorite Asian film (ignore the dull US remake), that has many frightening moments and beautiful cinematography.

Lake Mungo (2008) - I remember not expecting much from this found footage horror when I first watched it, but it turned out to be pretty damn spooky! If you haven't seen it, it is best to go in not knowing too much about it. Just trust me, and go watch it!

The Innocents (1961) – This classic film has a nanny taking a position at an enormous country estate watching two small children, however she keeps noticing mysterious people and occurences, and thinks the children are starting to behave rather oddly. Is it all in her head or is the mansion really haunted?

The Changeling (1980) – A creepy old house, violent deaths of children, a heartbroken composer and family secrets long buried make up this 80's ghost story. Creepy hidden rooms, ghost children, ominous bouncy balls and a terrifying wheelchair round out the fun!

The Orphanage (2007) - A heartbreaking but no less terrifying ghost tale from Spain. I must have a thing for ghost children, because this one features them as well.

Grave Encounters (2011) - Another found footage film that I didn't expect a lot from, but damn! There were some scares in this one that had me gasping for air! There is also a sequel, but it isn't nearly as good as the original.

House on Haunted Hill (1959) – Ok, this film isn't really scary, but I love the campy feel of this film, and it does have a few nice scares, including an unexpected spook in the basement. And there is always the debonair Vincent Price who, without fail, is a treat to watch.

Ghost Story (1981) - Ok, no kid ghosts here, just some older gentlemen hiding a devastating secret that seems to have crawled out of its watery grave. Filled with the beautiful snowy landscapes of New England, this ghost movie is perfect for a cold October night.

Ringu (1998) - What can I say? I have a thing for long-haired Asian ghosts. Like Ju-On, this is one of the first films I saw (actually, it was the US version, The Ring, but that made me want to watch this original) that got me into Asian horror cinema. And who doesn't love films about cursed videotapes and vengeful ghosts?

The Conjuring (2013) - I debated putting Insidious in this spot, but while I LOVE that film and its sequel, I thought The Conjuring was more appropriate for this list. I really dig how The Conjuring incorporates little (but no less terrifying) side stories (like the Annabel doll) into its overall narrative, which is creepy on its own. I remember watching this in the theater and having to watch some parts with my hands over my eyes! If you know me, you know how much says about how scary the film is!

There you have it, my favorite haunted house and ghost movies! What did I miss? What are your favorites?

Drew Daywalt has directed a lot of excellent short films, so I am always excited to see any of his new horror shorts! I recently discovered a short film he wrote and directed called Selfie. It was actually released around Halloween of last year, but it must have slipped under my radar as I just saw it for the first time recently. I had to share it, though, since it is so well-done and such an appropriate bite-sized treat for the upcoming holiday that is just a few short days away!

See what happens one Halloween night to a bored woman who decides to take a selfie:

                                     I love this Halloween shirt!

Every year I try to buy Halloween-themed shirts to add to my collection, but this year the pickings have been rather slim. However, just last week I discovered AwfulArt.com, which is the art of Nathan Willison, and found my new favorite Halloween tee for 2014!

Close-up of my t-shirt plus the Dead Birds patch!

This shirt is unique and perfectly captures the Halloween spirit! Mine even came with a free "Dead Birds" patch. The shirt is a dark gray and super-comfy. It runs a bit long in the sleeves and torso, but that is okay with me! I like my shirts a little bigger, so I ordered a size large and it fits great!

This is the perfect tee for posing with pumpkins, and so much more!

Besides this awesome t-shirt, Awful Art aka Nathan Willison also offers wickedly cool decals, stickers, patches, and other cool designs! Shipping was really fast, so if you hurry, you might be able to get yours before Halloween. And if not, you can wear the shirt year-round, like I'm planning to! I've already received so many compliments while wearing the tee this weekend.

The tee is only $15 plus shipping, so get yours now before they sell out and you'll be the coolest Halloween kid on the block! And, as an added bonus, you'll be supporting a talented independent artist.

                                    Get yours on AwfulArt.com!

31 Days of Halloween: Nutter Butter Ghost Cookies

Looking for last-minute, easy food ideas for Halloween? How about this super simple snack? Take some Nutter Butters (they are an "accidentally vegan" item!) and spread some of your favorite white vegan icing on them (alternatively, you can dip them in white icing if it is liquid enough).

For the eye and mouth, you can use mini chocolate chips, black icing or melted chocolate. If you use mini chocolate chips, you can stick them onto the icing when it's still wet. If you are using melted chocolate or dark icing (anything you have to "draw" with), then let the white icing dry first on some parchment paper before trying to draw on the eyes and mouth.

Let everything dry completely, then serve these delightful treats at your Halloween party or enjoy while watching your favorite haunted house movie!

31 Days of Halloween: Anaheim Halloween Parade 2014

The Anaheim Halloween Parade celebrated its 90th year Saturday night in the downtown district. For all my years living in Orange County, this year was the first time I had ever heard about this parade! What really interested me in the parade were the vintage floats, displays and decorations they still use as well as the rich history of the parade (which you can read all about here). I have been following the float-building progress on their Facebook page and just couldn't wait to attend!

Reuben sandwich and curly yam fries from Healthy Junk while
                                    waiting for the parade.

The Anaheim Fall Festival was that same day as the parade, so Mister Spooky and I showed up around 4pm to get a parking spot, grab a bite to eat, and check out the festival, held a block away from the parade route. We parked in the residential neighborhood a few streets south of the beginning of the parade route, then walked a mile or so to the Anaheim Promenade where the fall festival was taking place. I grabbed a delicious Reuben sandwich and yam fries from Healthy Junk, we walked around a bit, then headed back towards the beginning of the parade route to grab a good viewing spot and to enjoy our food.

There were lots of people who showed up for the parade, and the two-mile parade route was pretty packed. Some people even came dressed up and those who lived in the area had parties to watch the parade from their front lawns or porches (the old houses down there are gorgeous, by the way!). It was a fun, energetic atmosphere!

The parade started a little after 6pm, right as the sun was going down, and lasted about an hour and a half. I had a great time and will definitely add this to my Halloween traditions to do every October! Here are some photos I took (apologies if they are a bit blurry, it was hard to get pics!):

The Headless Horsemen kicked off the parade!

These vintage-inspired floats/characters were one of my faves!

The Flying Sasser, a historic float that was first in the parade in the '50s!

The Rocket Witch! Totally cool retro float!

These characters are creations of artist Rhode Montijo (read about
him here!)! They were my faves!

I love pumpkinheads! And this one was riding a wooden horse!

Blurry pic, but this witch float was really cool! The main witch in
                                    front is riding a broom!

This big haunted house float (left) was amazing! It had a neat
graveyard that preceded it (lower right corner), plus a spooky hearse
(middle right), and cute costumed kids behind it (top right).

These beautiful Halloween trees where mesmerizing! So pretty!

This spooky spider float even had shoes on its legs! So creepy cute!

Dia de los Muertos float, complete with an altar filled with marigolds
and candles, and two towering calaveras!

Silly but adorable pig, the Anaheim Brewery float (the arm moved so
it looked like the dude was drinking beer), creepy guy on stilts, and a fun
                                    pumpkin lantern float!

Another creepy skeleton on stilts...loved these guys and from all the
screaming the kids in attendance were petrified by them, mwahahaha!

Another Day of the Dead display!

You can find more information on the parade on their official site!

I discovered the art of Naisa Gómez Plúguez just a few months ago on Instagram, but since then I have been absolutely enthralled by her artwork. Naisa draws spooky little characters that are so imaginative and express so much emotion. Her art is very much like pop surrealism, and kind of reminds me of some of Mark Ryden's work with a touch of Camille Rose Garcia, but completely unique in its own right!

I love her enchanting artwork, which speaks so much to me and I can relate to so much! I am lucky to own a few originals of her work, and was thrilled to do a Halloween swap with her this month. She lives in Puerto Rico, so it was fun to send her Halloween goodies from California in exchange for some of her artwork. It was a lot of fun, and I am in awe of the art pieces she sent me!

Naisa sells her artwork through her Store Envy, and also does commissions upon request. You can also find her on Instagram,  Tumblr, and Facebook!

Here are a few of her works, sketches, and works-in-progress that I adore (all images from Naisa's Instagram or Tumblr):

One of my annual Halloween traditions is hitting up the pumpkin patch, and my most favorite one I've been to in Orange County is located just about 10 minutes from me in Irvine! If you've followed me for a while, you probably will recognize the Tanaka Farms Pumpkin Patch as one of my most favorite places to be.

I visited the pumpkin patch about a month ago (on opening day back in September), but still wanted to share some photos with you of this gorgeous gourd garden! I wish I could visit in the middle of the night on Halloween (I still can't believe it is only two days away!) and wait for the Great Pumpkin!

31 Days of Halloween: Chocolate Pumpkin Mini Cakes

I am pretty obsessed with the Marbled Banana Bread from Isa Chandra Moskowitz's cookbook Isa Does It, cuz who wouldn't be in love with that banana and chocolate combo?!

Out of curiosity and for my love of all things pumpkin, I did a search on Isa's Post-Punk Kitchen site to see if she might have a similar recipe with pumpkin-y, autumn flavors. I ended up hitting the jackpot and found her recipe for a Chocolate Pumpkin Loaf, which I transformed into jack-o-lantern mini cakes!

At first, the combo of pumpkin + chocolate sounded a little funny to me, even though I love both. Still, I had to try it! The result was better than I could have anticipated! Of course, as you can tell from the photo above I didn't make a loaf...instead I poured the batter into some jack-o-lantern molds and made mini cakes!

I think this is the perfect chocolate-y, pumpkin-y treat to make the night before Halloween, or Devil's Night (can I rename this Devil's Pumpkin Cake?)! It is also a wonderful dessert to make as we transition from October to November. The cakes were really chocolaty, but also full of warm, autumn flavors and they make a tempting treat on a chilly autumn day (or night!).

You can find the recipe for this perfect pumpkin treat on the PPK site!

Happy Halloween, fiends!! Thanks for joining me on the 31 Days of Halloween countdown! I hope you had as much fun as I did. I cannot believe it is already over and that it is Halloween, the best day of the year! I want the season to start all over again and it's bittersweet that another Halloween season is nearly over.

I wanted to take a look back to appreciate all the bucket list items I completed this month. Let's take a look at my original bucket list and see what items I completed and can cross off, shall we?

-Visit the pumpkin patches at Tanaka Farms and Irvine Regional Park
-Drink pumpkin tea/pumpkin flavored coffee - I did A LOT of this!

-Watch as many horror movies as possible - I focused a lot on haunted house/ghost movies this month, and mission accomplished!
-Attend Vegan Oktoberfest in Santa Monica October 4th
-Bake pumpkin muffins, bread, scones, cookies, etc.
-Watch as many Halloween-themed movies, tv shows, specials, etc.
-Finally get a Hocus Pocus poster and have it framed - didn't get around to this, wahhhhh!
-Visit all the big box stores (Target, Walmart, HomeGoods, etc.) to look at their Halloween stock (but restrain myself from buying all of it) - yes, I visited tons of stores and I think I controlled myself (Mister Spooky might have a different opinion, though)

-Burn pumpkin spice wax melts/candles 24/7 so my house always smells like an autumnal wonderland - pumpkin spice errrrrryday!
-Drink apple cider - I didn't go to Julian this year, so didn't get any fresh stuff, though I did have some yummy Honey Crisp Apple Cider from Trader Joe's!
-Sample lots of different pumpkin or autumn beers - oh heck yes; see this post from earlier this month
                                    -Carve pumpkins - duh
-Crank up the Halloween music - I started listening to Halloween music and June (and enjoy it year round)
-Host a pumpkin carving party or horror movie night - yep, always a blast!
-Hand out vegan candy to trick or treaters (I live in a new neighborhood where I hope they have trick or treaters) - this is yet to be seen! Fingers crossed for trick or treaters tonight!

-Send Halloween cards to friends and family - I hosted a fun Halloween card swap, so definitely done!
-Wear as much orange and black as possible - I think I need more orange clothing
-Make a new Halloween music mix to post on 8tracks - never got around to this
-Watch Halloween cartoons - didn't watch as many as I usually do
-Visit the Halloween display at Roger’s Gardens in Newport Beach - did this on opening day
-Go to a haunted house, haunt or hayride - I finally went to Universal's Halloween Horror Nights (read out it here), a local haunted house called Empty Grave, and I'm actually going to Delusion, a haunted house/interactive play this Sunday!

-Read The Halloween Tree and other Halloween-themed stories - done!
-Paint my nails orange - yep!
-Check out horror movies in theaters - I only checked out As Above So Below in September, but didn't see any in theaters in October
-Roast pumpkin seeds - yep, did this after multiple pumpkin carvings!
-Try new vegan autumn recipes - meh, was so busy that it didn't leave much time for cooking....relied mostly on quick meals and pumpkin everything!
-Eat as many pumpkin-based foods (that are vegan) as possible - definitely done! I can never get enough!
-Complete the 31 Days of Halloween challenge! - Planned this year's countdown months in advance so I wouldn't fall behind in posting like last year! Mission accomplished!!

I had a lot of fun with this year's countdown, but since I took this hallowed day off from work, I'm going to go gorge myself on pumpkin foodstuffs, watch even more Halloween-y horror movies, and hope for trick or treaters tonight!

Wishing you and yours a very Happy Halloween!

I have been drooling over Natural Balance Foods' Eat Nākd bars ever since my UK friends started snacking on these yummy raw fruit and nut bars! So far they have been out of reach as they weren't previously available in the US, but that is about to change! Right now, US residents can order Eat Nākd bars online and in 2015 the delectable bars should start popping up in stores here in the USA! We will finally be able to get our hands on these all-natural, raw, vegan, gluten- and wheat-free bars!

The good folks at Natural Balance Foods were kind enough to send me a mixed box of their Eat Nākd bars to try, packed full of many different flavors, including Cocoa Orange, Ginger Bread, Cashew Cookie, Caffe Mocha, Rhubarb and Custard, and many more! You can order a similar mixed case of Eat Nākd bars on their site, which gives you a wonderful opportunity to try out many of their delicious flavors!

I have been enjoying these bars for about a week, trying a new flavor each day! I really love how these bars taste –they come in some incredible flavors and are packed full of nutrients! So far, some of my favorites include Pecan Pie, Ginger Bread, and Cocoa Orange. The flavors of each of the bars have been intriguing and satisfying – I look forward to snacking on a bar every day and it’s always a party in my mouth!

The best part about Eat Nākd bars (besides their fun flavors, of course!)? They live up to their “naked” name, which means they are made will 100% all natural ingredients and are made with just raw fruit and nuts. The bars have no added sugar or syrups, are gluten- and wheat-free (learn more about a wheat-free diet), dairy-free, and non-GMO.  They are packed with only the good stuff and are a healthy treat or snack.

For more info or to order bars, visit Natural Balance Foods' site!

                                    Next Year's Halloween Bucket List

I still have the Halloween blues, so I decided to start dreaming of next year's events, and write down stuff I missed out on that I want to try for next year!

Though I felt like I did a lot of activities this Halloween season, I barely made a dent in all the events that Southern California has to offer in September and October (and some November). I figure that I should start a new tradition of writing down what I want to tackle next year, so I can start my plan of attack early!

I know there is no way that I could do it all (unless perhaps I took the whole month off and went completely broke), but I want to add these bucket list items on here as a placeholder/reminder for events/haunts/activities that I want to do next year in and around SoCal!

Danny Elfman's Music from the Films of Tim Burton - I always balk at the ticket prices for this, but every time I regret not buying tickets! If this happens again next year I MUST, MUST go!

Rise of the Jack-o-Lanterns at Descanso Gardens - I believe 2014 was the first year for this event, and from all the photos I saw of it, it looked spectacular! I hope to make it up there next year!

LA Haunted Hayride - I was supposed to go this year, but again I didn't make it out, grrrr. Oh well, there is always next year, right?!

Knott's Scary Farm - I haven't been to Knott's in several years (the last time I went was a disaster), but it looks like they've improved on a bunch of stuff, so I may just add this to my "to-do" list next year!

Boney Island - Everyone raves about this home haunt, and it's a little far for me, but maybe I can combine it with another Halloween event next year and make it out that way.

Queen Mary's Dark Harbor- I don't know why this haunt falls beneath my radar every year...I've heard lots of good things about it and it is probably high time I actually check it out!

Wicked Lit - Plays based on literature held in a cemetery?? I AM SO IN! It is a bit of a trek since it is all the way up in Pasadena, but it looks worth it! I'll take anything that requires wandering around a cemetery at night!

Oak Glen Apple Orchards - I have been to Julian (check out last year's post) to the south for fall activities, but never to this northern patch of apple orchards. It looks very picturesque and beautiful! And maybe it's cooler too, since it is sorta up by the mountains! SoCal could do with some fall chill!

I also want to hit up all my usual haunts and a lot of the events I did this year, including the local pumpkin patches, Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, Delusion's interactive play, Disneyland's Halloweentime, and more!

Of course, who knows where I'll be next year - I may not even be living in SoCal any longer! If not, I'll have to make a whole other list of Halloween bucket list items for next year!

How are you dealing with the Halloween blues? Are you also already making a plan for next year?

I know Halloween is over (but not really, not when it is everyday for some of us), but I wanted to share some leftover Halloweenie pics I never got around to posting before October 31st. For those that follow me on Instagram, some of these might be familiar, but there are a few new ones I haven't posted anywhere before.

Besides the 31 Days of Halloween countdown, here is what I was up to this Halloween season:

I frolicked in pumpkin patches with lost ghosts.

I carved lots of pumpkins...this was the first pumpkin carving of
the season. I think my "Spooky" pumpkin came out pretty good!

                                    I made ghost pizza!

I attended Delusion: Lies Within, an incredible interactive
                                    play/haunt in LA!

I made these adorable skull and crossbones pumpkin cornbread
muffins from a Trader Joe's mix and enjoyed them with
                                    some vegan chili!

My awesome sea-star (sister) sent me a Halloween care package
with this rad "Happy Halloween Witches" sweatshirt and cool
                                    zombie book!

I had chick'n and waffles and made it look like a monster or a gorilla,
depending on who you ask (FYI the chick'n is Gardein's cutlets and the
                                    waffles are from Nature's Path).

I got this awesome postcard from the Sproul's

I bought these stunning collar clips and old hag necklace

I ate ALL THE VEGAN CHOCOLATE shaped like Halloween
black cats, coffins, pumpkins, owls, and various other shapes

I sported Gothcupcake's adorable Halloween hair bow.

I baked Trader Joe's pumpkin cornbread into shapes like
                                    jack-o-lanterns, skulls, and bones.

I ate more vegan chocolates, this time from Coracao Confections!

I ate more waffles, topped with So Delicious' Coco Whip and served
with cold brew coffee in my jolly jack-o-lantern cup.

I brought home this cute succulent in a pumpkin-shaped pot that
                                    matched my orange nails.

I ate all the pumpkin things, including this pumpkin food haul from
Sprouts market - Pumpkin Snaps, Harvest Pumpkin Tortilla Chips,
Sparkling Pumpkin Cider, Pumpkin Spice Hummus, and Maple
Pumpkin Butter. Yep, everything is vegan!

I drank a lot of pumpkin ale, like this Saranac (which is vegan),
and ate a lot of vegan pizza, like this one I made that is shaped like
pumpkin and topped with kale, artichoke hearts, vegan cheese,
                                    and vegan bacon.

I set up a Halloween card swap with a few friends and it was a lot of fun!

I couldn't resist these So Delicious Pumpkin Spice frozen treats, and
                                    neither could my skeletal friends.

Everything is Halloween themed, even my homemade deodorant
(get the recipe!)! I used Halloween ice molds I got at the Dollar
                                    Store to make Halloween deodorant!

I did a Halloween swap with talented artist Naisa Gómez Plúguez
and received some of her stunning artwork!

I made a few new friends...

...and so did my baby-bat kitty-cat Havoc!

I picked up a few new horror tees and some festive boxers to sleep in.

Of course, my drink of choice this season was Ghoul-Aid!

I started planning for Creepmas and checked out these
adorable bat ornaments at Roger's Gardens.

My teenage goth dreams came true and I got to see
Marilyn Manson for the first time ever!
Added bonus: it was in an intimate small space!

On Halloween night, we carved pumpkins, hung out with our
skeleton Frankie, and handed out candy to trick or treaters!

I scared little kids at the door with my skull makeup on
                                    All Hallow's Eve.

It's Nearly Time to Celebrate Creepmas Again!

I'm a CREEP for The 13 Days of CREEPMAS

It's almost time to celebrate the 13 days of Creepmas and inject some much needed spookiness into the Christmas season! I've participated in the Creepmas blogging event since its inception back in 2011 (browse past posts here!), and I'm excited to participate again this year, along with some other fantastic bloggers!

There is always room for a few more good ghouls if you'd like to participate (more info on how to participate here), and this year everyone is also invited to participate in the #MakingCreepmas image challenge as well (more info on that here!)!

From the official Creepmas site, here is a bit more on what Creepmas is all about:
CREEPMAS is a good-natured push back at Retail America for trying to force Christmas down our throats as early as July. Something has gone seriously wrong with how holidays are marketed to us in the last 5 years. When you go to a major retail store in mid-October only to find they've gotten rid of all their Halloween merchandise in favor of snowmen & Santas, well, it's time to take action!
Something as utterly ridiculous as Christmas trees in August deserves an equally ridiculous response!
CREEPMAS is for those Halloween lovers and Monster Kids who want to say "enough is enough" - if they're going to put their Christmas into our Halloween, then let's put our Halloween into their Christmas! Tim Burton showed us that it can be done with marvelous results, and we're definitely following his lead.
The 13 Days of Creepmas is an online Celebration of Spookiness from December 1 - 13. The idea is to bring a macabre twist to Christmas and the holidays. Get creative and post it on your blog - share your twisted yule visions with the world!
Now bear in mind - this is for FUN. We're not out to ruin other peoples' holidays and sabotage/vandalism are NOT what we're promoting. Leave the neighbors' nativity scene alone. The 13 Days of Creepmas is about how you decorate yourself, your home and/or your life to let the world know that you are a CREEP! Wear it loud, wear it proud!
And Thanksgiving? Sorry, you turkey - you're on your own.
                                    Merry Creepmas to all!

Restaurant Review: Fresh Brothers in Newport Beach, CA

Vegan Sausage and Cheese Pizza from Fresh Brothers

Fresh Brothers is a small chain of pizza restaurants with locations all over SoCal, though mostly centered in and around LA. I was excited that they recently opened their first Orange County location in Newport Beach (near Roger's Gardens and Fashion Island). Pizza is my lifeblood, so I was stoked to hear they had vegan options and couldn't wait to check them out! In fact, they have a special vegan section on their menu that includes a couple different kinds of pizza, plus Gardein chick'n tenders, salads, fries, and even special vegan dressings!

The vibe of Fresh Brothers was very welcoming, and their restaurant is bright and clean. There are about seven or so tables, but you can also take orders to go if it gets full. I went for dinner on a weeknight, and it wasn't too crowded. I ordered the vegan tenders with a side of fries and the vegan sausage and cheese pizza. The vegan sausage was very yummy and the vegan cheese they used was Daiya. I got their normal thin-crust, but they also have a "skinny" crust, a gluten-free crust (which is an additional $3), and a deep dish crust. I believe all are vegan, but double-check with the manager first. The person who took my order was a bit clueless about the vegan options, so I would recommend asking the manager just to verify.

Vegan tenders and fries plus vegan sauces!

The vegan tenders were a bit pricey at $11.95 for 1/2 pound with a side of fries, but they were really tasty and cooked well! The fries were also delicious. I also liked how they were thoughtful and forward-thinking enough to offer vegan dipping sauces, including vegan blue cheese and vegan ranch sauces!

Some of the vegan sauces - Vegan Blue Cheese, Vegan Ranch and
BBQ (which they specified was also vegan).

The medium vegan pizza I ordered came out to about $12, even though on the menu it is listed as $15. Score! I really liked it...the Daiya was melted perfectly, the tomato sauce was flavorful, the crust had the perfect crunch, and the vegan sausage was yummy. I also liked how they cut it in squares instead of slices...so much easier to eat!

Besides the vegan sausage and cheese pizza, they also offer a vegan cheese pizza, but another cool thing about Fresh Brothers is that you can build your own custom pizza. They start at $11.95 for a medium and each additional topping costs about $1.50. So, you could build an epic veggie pizza should your heart so desire. They also offer a bunch of salads for those looking to get some greens along with their pizza grubbin'.

Yummy fries and vegan chick'n tenders!

I would definitely go back to Fresh Brothers since their pizza was so dang good, my only issue was that the person taking my order didn't seem familiar with the vegan options. If their servers were a bit better educated on their vegan menu items I would recommend this place 100%. I hope they improve on this, because I am so stoked they have awesome vegan options and delicious vegan pizza!

For more info, including locations and a full menu, check out the Fresh Brothers' site!

It’s December 1st, which means it's time to kickoff the 13 Days of Creepmas, where we inject some much needed holiday FEAR into the season! You can read more about the event and find a list of all blogs participating on the official Creepmas site…be sure to visit the other sinister sites that are participating, too!

For some reason I didn’t join in last year even though I was part of it in 2011 and 2012, but I am back this year and will be posting every day the first 13th days of December. Everything I share will be a way to spookify the season, from gothic gifts, to sinister sweaters, to gruesome gingerbread, to zombie Santas, to creepy carols!

To kick things off, here are the denizens of Halloweentown to show you how to make Christmas creepy:

And here are a few posts from previous years to get you in the spooktacular holiday spirit:

Turning the holidays into hollowdays/horrordays is kinda like having a second Halloween! I hope you'll be back over the next 13 days for more Creepmas fun!

The Haunted Mansion's 2014 Gingerbread House at Disneyland!
They change it every year for their Nightmare Before Christmas
display! It is massive and I believe it is made with real gingerbread.

Building gingerbread houses for the holidays just got a whole lot creepier! Instead of traditional cutesy gingerbread houses, this year you can make a ginger-"dead" haunted house, taking inspiration from Halloween or The Nightmare Before Christmas, like the photo above! A lot of gingerbread kits are sold around Halloween, but you can also make or modify your own for Creepmas.

A lot of gingerbread kits sold in stores aren't vegan (though you can buy a vegan and gluten-free one from Sensitive Sweets in Orange County - they ship, too!), but you can make your own vegan gingerbread house by following this easy recipe

For vegan decorations, you can use vegan candy canes (usually found at health food stores or Whole Foods), Twizzlers (accidentally vegan), Dots (accidentally vegan), Sweet Surfs candies (many of their candies are vegan, just check the label!), vegan chocolates from Endangered Species, Go Max Go, Sjaak's, Premium Chocolatiers, etc., pretzels, vegan sprinkles, shredded coconut, dried fruit and nuts, vegan fruit roll ups, vegan marshmallows from Dandies or Sweet and Sara, vegan lollipops, and so on! The royal icing for holding together the gingerbread haunted house can also be made vegan (and even dyed with vegan food dyes if needed), and a recipe for that is included in the recipe above.

Here are few examples to get you inspired (note: some of the candies shown in the pics below aren't vegan, so just be aware these are just examples to spark your imagination!):

If gingerbread houses are too much of a project for you, may I suggest making ginger-"dead" cookies? You can make them suitable for Creepmas by transforming boring old gingerdead cookies into spooky skeletons, vicious vampires, or macabre mummies with just a bit of icing! Or use Halloween cookie cutters to cut Christmas-y gingerbread into Halloweenie shapes! Check out the photos below for ideas:
