Food Review: So Delicious' Candy Corn and Pumpkin Spice Frozen Desserts

$

Last week, I was ecstatic to discover So Delicious' coconut milk non-dairy frozen desserts in the new Candy Corn and Pumpkin Spice flavors at my Whole Foods! I have been looking forward to these vegan ice cream treats ever since I saw sneak peeks of them a month or so ago. If you are a lover of all things Halloween like I am, you should be excited for these cuties, too, especially since they come in pumpkin or candy corn shapes!

So Delicious was kind enough to send me some coupons so I could have a chance to try these festive desserts, and I kept checking Whole Foods religiously for these boo-tiful babies. Finally, after October 1st, I was finally able to get my claws on them! Each box contains four bars and retails around $4.99.

My pet skeleton Frankie loves So Delicious' Candy Corn Frozen Dessert!

I tried the Candy Corn frozen dessert first, which unfortunately not candy corn-flavored, but just candy corn shaped. This was a little disappointing, but I still really enjoyed this one! The bottom orange layer is orange creamsicle flavored, the white part is vanilla and the tip is coated with a hard chocolate coating, with more vanilla underneath. I didn't think I would like this one much after finding out it wasn't candy corn flavored, but, you know what, I actually LOVED the flavors of this one! It was so smooth and creamy, plus the flavors were all distinctive and delicious. Sure, it wasn't exactly a Halloween flavor, but the candy corn shape itself was enough to put a big smile on my face!

The other members of my skeletal family were also clambering for a bite
of So Delicious' Pumpkin Spice!

A few days later I tried the Pumpkin Spice flavor, which is shaped like a darling little pumpkin. Like the Candy Corn frozen dessert, this one was very rich and creamy. The flavor was a wonderfully subtle pumpkin spice, and I appreciated how it wasn't overpowering. It reminded me of these pumpkin milkshakes I used to get in the fall as a kid - the same sweet and spicy pumpkin taste mingled with a decadent, thick consistency. It felt downright wicked eating something this rich, but there are only 100 calories in each treat (and that goes for both flavors)!

Between the two, I really can't pick a favorite...I love them both equally and I am so excited that vegans get some rad Halloween treats! Thank you, So Delicious for making these wonderful dairy-free treats for us this Halloween!

These are now in stores at Whole Foods, and may also be available in other natural food stores, too!

31 Days of Halloween: The Art of Rhode Montijo

Some people might know Rhode Montijo as the comic book artist who created Pablo's Inferno and co-created the cartoon Happy Tree Friends, but I will always associate him with the book The Halloween Kid, which is an adorable children's book about a pint-sized Halloween buckaroo!

Besides The Halloween Kid, Montijo has many other Halloween artwork that I adore! His vibrant, almost vintage-feeling designs are always full of so much Halloween joy and they never fail to put a big ol' smile on my face!! I hope to one day own one of his original works (or at least a nice print)!

Here are some of my favorite works from this quirky artist:

31 Days of Halloween: Jack-o-Lantern Breakfast "Sandwitch" Recipe

Vegan Jack-o-Lantern Breakfast Sandwitch!

Isn't this the cutest breakfast EVER?! And it is so easy to make, too!

Check out the recipe below, which I've veganized/tweaked from this source:

Ingredients:

2 small (4-inch) pumpkin pancakes (I made the ones from Isa's Vegan Brunch book!)
1 tablespoon plain vegan cream cheese (like Tofutti), with about a teaspoon of maple syrup mixed in
1 precooked thin vegan sausage patty (I used Lightlife's Gimme Lean vegan sausage)
1 precooked tofu round (prepared with The Vegg vegan egg yolk)

Instructions:

You’ll need to cook your tofu rounds, vegan sausages and pancakes before you can build your sandwitch! I'm not going to go into full detail on these preparations, as I trust you can figure it out yourself, but I will offer some tips below.

Frying up the tofu rounds with The Vegg mixture

For the tofu, I like preparing it the night before. First, I press it for a few hours (to help squeeze all the water out), then I cut it in half and cut these pieces into rounds (a round cookie cutter works well for this!), and finally I marinate the tofu rounds in The Vegg overnight (I just put the rounds in an airtight container and pour prepared Vegg over them and stick it in the fridge). The next morning I just fry up the rounds in a cast iron skillet and set them aside until I'm ready to assemble the sandwitch.

Next, the vegan sausages are easy, though preparation will vary by brand. Usually you just form them into patties and fry them up in a skillet. Easy peasy!

Pumpkin pancakes taste even better when they actually
look like jack-o-lanterns!

Lastly, make the pancakes, using whatever recipe you like (though Isa's pumpkin pancakes from her cookbook mentioned above are delish and the recipe I used!). Once done cooking and slightly cooled, cut them into pumpkin shapes using a cookie cutter, as shown in the photo above.

After you have the tofu, sausages and pancakes all cooked, it's time to assemble the sandwitch! Reheat the tofu rounds and sausages if you like. Then take two small pancakes to use as the "bread" of your sandwitch - on one of them, use a jack-o-lantern cookie cutter or knife to carve a jack-o-lantern face. This one will be the top of your sandwitch. On the other pancake that will serve as the bottom of your 'witch, you can start building the layers of the sandwitch.

Start with the vegan cream cheese and spread it on the bottom pancake, then add about a teaspoon of maple syrup and mix it into the cream cheese. Next, add the sausage patty and tofu round, and top with the jack-o-lantern face pancake! Ta-da, you have your very own jack-o-lantern breakfast sandwitch that is almost too cute to eat! And I love how the sweetness of the pancakes and maple cream cheese melds perfectly with the savoriness of the tofu round and sausage! SO GOOD!!

Jack-o-lantern sandwitch served with a mushroom/arugula/
heirloom tomato tofu scramble and iced coffee!

Besides being delicious and adorable, an added bonus to this recipe is that you will have extra stuff to either make more sandwitches OR to make a scramble with the tofu, plus have leftover pancakes and sausages!

31 Days of Halloween: Ghost Costumes

What else is more classic for Halloween than a good old ghost costume? I love ghost costumes not only because they are a classic, but because they are so versatile. The ghost costume can be as basic or as elaborate as the wearer wants. For example, you could dress up in fancy Victorian clothes or opt to just throw a white sheet over your body! And there are so many options and different ways to go with a ghost costume! You could be an evil ghost, a beautiful ghost, a scary ghost, a romantic ghost, an historical ghost, a famous ghost...the list goes on and on!

Since the theme for this month's countdown is ghosts, I wanted to share some spirited costumes and makeup to inspire you this month! I found many of these on Pinterest, so unfortunately I couldn't find their original sources (if you know them, please let me know so I can give credit to these!). Check them out below:

I love this vintage-looking ghost costume and makeup!

I love this dark ghost look, completed with dark
eye makeup, black lips, and white-out contacts.
This could also be used for a demonic possession costume!

I love the white webbing used in this look
and the slightly blue tint to the lips!

This dapper couple dressed up as two
historical ghosts and I love their pale
makeup and all-white clothes.

Another Victorian look that's more cute than scary,
but I do love how elegant it looks and it's easy to pull
off, too!

This look is much creepier and achieved with
wispy cloak, gray wig, pale makeup and
eerie contacts.

While we stress over the most creative and clever costume to wear this year, sometimes you just have to go with the classics (like my previous post on ghost costumes!)!

That brings us to Personal Creations, who is supplying the nostalgia this year with an illustrated look back at the past 25 years of popular Halloween costumes! Their illustrated guide includes one hit wonders like V for Vendetta and long-time favorites like Spiderman. Who would've thought in the 90s we'd be seeing just as many Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles decades later?

31 Days of Halloween: The Best Books for Halloween Part 2

I love curling up with a spooky book, and now is the perfect time to delve into a creepy book that will immerse you in Halloween spirit! There are lots of horror books you can read this time of year, but I like to enjoy scary books that are Halloween-themed or at least set during Halloween. I wrote about 5 of my faves a few years ago, but I wanted to share a few more that I love reading this time of year! This year’s picks vary from horror novels, to picture books, to children’s books and even non-fiction books about the holiday!

Trick 'r Treat: Tales of Mayhem, Mystery, and Mischief – This gorgeous picture book is a joy for any fan of the Trick ‘r Treat movie. It comes in a beautiful slipcase, and is filled with vivid artwork, fold out goodies, and more! It tells the story of the making of Trick 'r Treat, plus sections on Halloween lore. I love leafing through it this time of year to get excited about Halloween!

The Halloween Kid is a cute kid’s book about a pint-sized hero who is determined to save his favorite holiday, Halloween! This book was made with love by Rhode Montijo, whose art I adore! It has a retro, 1950s feel and a great message. Reading it makes me feel like a kid again and makes me giddy for Halloween.

Trick or Treat: A History of Halloween - A historical look at Halloween, including economic, sociological, folkloric and pop culture looks at All Hallow's Eve and how the holiday has grown from its pagan roots to the popular holiday it is today! This is a fascinating read if you like learning about the history of our favorite holiday!

Poems Bewitched and Haunted (Everyman's Library Pocket Poets) - This is a lovely collection of frightful poems about witches, ghosts, and other things that go bump in the night with a heavy emphasis on classic poems. I love reading a few of these before bed each night by flicking candlelight to really evoke the Halloween spirit!

Halloween - Paula Guran curates a collection of terrifying tales from authors including Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Sarah Langan, and many more! I love how many different authors are included in this book, and how many different literary styles are represented! This has something spooky for everyone and is a wonderful addition to any Halloween library.

What are your favorites to read during the month of Halloween?

31 Days of Halloween: Three Little Ghostesses

Art by Kristy Tracy

When I was younger, I remember having a book about three little ghosts that really enjoyed toast. I was obsessed with that book, but I don't know what became of it. I think it may have been an old nursery rhyme book, but I can't remember exactly. I've scoured the web for it (I remember the accompanying pictures of the little ghostesses on postesses enjoying toastesses), but didn't have any luck.

All I remember is the poem, and that the accompanying illustrations kinda looked like they were from the 1950s. I still love reciting the poem to myself as a bit of silly fun, and thought it felt quite well with this October's theme of ghosts.

Though the poem has been tweaked in the artist's interpretation above, this is how I remember it going:

Three little ghostesses
Sitting on postesses
Eating buttered toastesses
Greasing their fistesses
Up to their wristesses
Oh, what beastesses
To make such feastesses!

If anyone knows the name of the book that contains this delightful little poem, please let me know!

31 Days of Halloween: The Art of Heather Gleason

I cannot believe I haven't featured Heather Gleason on this blog yet! I was so convinced I had previously written about her that I spent the last 10 minutes searching for posts about her and her art. I fondly remember the serendipitous day when I found her art booth in Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown while on vacation in New York last year! It was such a delightful surprise and I remember wanting to buy ALL her boo-tiful pieces (unfortunately I didn't have the room in my luggage, plus we had taken the train upstate and I didn't feel like hauling everything back into the city with me). I still regret not buying any of her art that day.

Heather Gleason is a full-time artist born and raised in the Hudson Valley region of New York. The location of the Hudson Valley, with its stunning fall foliage and spooky tales, has heavily influenced her spooky art and her love of Halloween is apparent in her works of art!

Take a look at some of my favorites below:

And take a look at this mesmerizing video Heather made of some more recent works (so much beautiful art!!):

Ghouls and boils, have you checked out the Fork and Beans site? It is one of my favorite recipe sites because it has so many inventive recipes, year after year and for any occasion.

I especially love the Halloween section of the site, as the culinary genius behind the recipes is Cara, who adores this time of year as much as I do! Her boo-tiful Halloween food creations have me awwwwwing and drooling (quite an awkward situation to be in if you're in a room with strangers), plus her recipes are simple and easy to make.

Cara created these adorable chocolate-covered macaroon ghost pops back in 2012, and I thought they were absolutely perfect to feature on the countdown, seeing as they fit right in with the ghostly theme! If you follow Cara's recipe and use her raw chocolate these will be raw, or you can just use melted chocolate chips so they will be mostly raw.

These little ghouls look almost too good to eat, but you'll want to scarf up the whole lot after you take a bite! They seem like the perfect decadent treat, but the coconut and dates make them pretty healthy! How's that for a trick and a treat?!

You can find the recipe for these ghosties on the Fork and Beans site!

And I highly recommend picking up Cara's cookbook, titled Decadent Gluten-Free Vegan Baking!

Reason #1,375 why I love Halloween so much - there are so many creepy-cute accessories and jewelry pieces that are styled with a gothic aesthetic! I love stocking up this time of year because not only are they perfect for Halloween, but also year-round for spooky little girls like me!

Below you will find several independent companies that make the spookiest, most beautiful gothic accessories! Many are local to Orange County and almost all are owned by women (with the exception of an incredible candle company). I love supporting local, independent companies, especially when they make gorgeously gothic products!

Please note that these handmade wares go fast, so the items pictured below might not be available by the time you click through, but commissions are always available from these fantastic creators!

Salem Couture specializes in adorable Peter Pan collars that come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and patterns! From basic white, to Halloween witches to neon bats, this eerie Etsy store has you covered! Check out some of the collars below:

Gothcupcake is your one-stop Etsy shop for "all things spooky, cute, weird and vegan." I love the hair-raising hairbows and jaw-dropping jewelry this shop makes, just take a look at some of the designs below:

Bijou Vixens makes stunning fascinators and other hair accessories that are perfect for your next costume ball or for running errands in. They will elevate any outfit and make you feel fancy! They create many different styles, from gothic to rockabilly to tiki-inspired! View a few of their products below:

Frightwares is a brand-new, local company that I adore!! Their horror- and Halloween-inspired necklaces and other accessories have me drooling big time! They have beautiful cameos, skull necklaces, vintage Halloween pins, and much more to come! Right now you can order whatever catches your fancy through their Instagram, but they are also working on an online store, which is coming soon.

BONUS:

Black Candle Company - I know it isn't exactly jewelry or accessories (though candles are pretty much a necessary accessory, at least for me!), but Black Candle Company makes some amazing-smelling black candles that are cruelty-free and vegan! Plus, they are local to Orange County and all their candles are made by hand. A lot of their items are in hot demand and so are sold out, but keep an eye out for new candles soon! Fun fact: The owners of Frightwares and Black Candle Company are married - how cute is that?!

31 Days of Halloween: Vegan Candy for Halloween

$

Every year it seems that we get more and more vegan candy options to hand out to trick or treaters, to serve at parties, or to munch on ourselves! I have an insatiable sweet tooth, so I am always prepared with lots of vegan candy options come Halloween. I like to hand out some to trick or treaters (if any stop by),  but mostly I end up eating it myself or sharing with friends when they come over for pumpkin carving parties or horror movie nights!

Here are my suggestions for vegan Halloween candy, which are sure to make your Halloween sweeter than ever!

Chocolate Covered Cocomels - These are the perfect size to hand out to trick or treaters…that is, if you feel like shelling out $2 a pop for these cuties (available at Fresh and Easy stores)! At that price, I’ll be hoarding these babies all to myself! These chocolate-coated vegan caramels come in flavors like Espresso, Sea Salt and Vanilla will melt in your mouth! You can also purchase the original Cocomel caramels in the same flavors.

Sjaak’s Chocolates– Sjaak’s makes some of the best vegan chocolate I’ve ever tasted and would definitely be a treat for anyone this Halloween! I love their Eli’s Earth candy bars (my fave is the Treasure Bar, a solid layer of crunch peanut butter topped with caramel and coated in creamy ‘milk’ chocolate’!). They also have Halloween-themed candies available for purchase between September and October!

Justin’s Dark Chocolate PB Cups– I can’t resist including these peanut butter cups in this list! They usually have single-serve packs around this time of year that are wonderful for trick or treaters (hint: Costco usually carries the huge bag of these for around $10)! Make sure you grab the vegan dark chocolate variety, though – the other kind isn't vegan.

Endangered Species Chocolate Bars– Endangered Species keeps upping their game! Just this year they released vegan cream-filled chocolate bars in wild flavors like Lavender! And they also make small, single-serve chocolate bars around this time of year for passing out to trick or treaters! I believe most (if not all) of their varieties are vegan, but double-check the labels just in case.

Earth Balance PB Popps– This vegan peanut butter-coated popcorn is so addicting! Spread the love by putting it in cute Halloween treat bags and handing out to your friends and neighbors! Unless of course you eat the bag yourself, which is a perfectly acceptable option as well.

Go Max Go Candy Bars–Go Max Go has veganized pretty much all the popular candy bars, with flavors like Jokerz (Snickers), Thumbs Up (Butterfingers), Cleo’s (Reese’s), Snap! (Crunch), Buccaneer (3 Muskateers), Twilight (Mars), Mahalo (Almond Joy/Mounds). You can now be like one of these cool houses that passed out full-size candy bars, but even cooler cuz all Go Max Go bars are vegan!

Surf Sweets– Looking for some gummies that are also vegan? Surf Sweets makes several vegan varieties, including Sour Worms, Fruity Bears and Watermelon and Peach rings! They also have a Halloween Treats pack that is vegan! Always check the labels, though, as they have several other varieties that are not vegan.

Or, you could just make your own vegan candy bars! An excellent source for homemade candy bar recipes is the Fork and Beans blog, whose Ghost Pops I just featured the other day!

Do you have any favorite vegan candies this time of year?

What kind of Halloween goodies do you hand out to trick or treaters on Halloween?

While browsing the fantastic site Halloween Short Films (also a member of the great 31 Days of Halloween countdown!), I found this gem of a short film, called Trick or Treat, that was made back in 2010. I love the atmosphere of this short, as well as the costume of the killer! Check it out below!

For Sam and her friends Halloween is a night filled with tricks and treats. The name of the game is whose prank is the scariest. The fun ends when Sam begins receiving bizarre gifts on her doorstep. Is this just another prank or has someone changed the rules?

Featuring a talented cast (Dave Fontaine, Ky Gratton, and Anna Ross), Trick or Treat is a short horror film from the mind and direction of Michael Oakes.

31 Days of Halloween: Haunted Places in Orange County

$

0

Since I've chosen ghosts and hauntings as the overarching theme for this year’s 31 Days of Halloween, I thought it would be fun to explore some supposedly haunted locations in Orange County (virtually of course!).

I have always been fascinated with haunted locations, whether they are the typical historic haunted houses or otherwise nondescript modern structures that have perhaps witnessed tragic events. Whether you believe in haunted places or not, there are just some locations that put your nerves on end, give you the shivers, and make you feel like something unseen is watching.

Even though Orange County isn't that old and doesn't have as many historical structures as other parts of the state, there are a surprising number of reportedly haunted locations, some that were even new to me! I haven’t listed them all, but here are a few I've handpicked for their accessibility in case you would like to conduct your own ghost investigation. Many historical societies and paranormal groups in Orange County also offer tours of these locations, especially in October, should you feel safer going in a group.

Please read on, but visit these locations at your own risk…

The trail up Black Star Canyon

Black Star Canyon in the Santa Ana foothills – Out of all the locations listed here, this one place freaks me out the most. This isolated canyon gets eerie after nightfall, with reports of strange occurrences and unfriendly locals giving this canyon hiking trail a notorious reputation. The legends surrounding this place include an Indian massacre, human sacrifice in Satanic rituals, mysterious “Lady in White” sightings, and more. Should you find yourself up the canyon after nightfall, you may experience disembodied screams, shadowy shapes and an overall uneasy feeling of someone (or something) watching you. And if the spirits don't bother you enough, you will also need to keep an eye out for the locals up there, who react with hostility towards outsiders. Orange County Ghosts and Legends Tours takes groups up the canyon so you don’t have to experience the foreboding atmosphere alone.

The first adobe on left eventually became El Adobe Restaurant

El Adobe Restaurant in San Juan Capistrano - Located in one of the oldest buildings in Orange County, El Adobe was built as a home in 1797, then was used as the town’s courthouse and jail starting in 1812, and eventually becoming the restaurant it is today. El Adobe Restaurant is said to be haunted by the spirit of a headless monk, who may just greet you at the front of the restaurant and has been known to hang around the wine cellar (which was once the jail). You can try to meet this spirit during the month of October, as the restaurant usually hosts a Halloween-themed dinner in the ghost’s honor.

Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano – San Juan Capistrano has more than one ghost, and its mission is home to several spirits, including a faceless monk, a Native American girl, a decapitated soldier who keeps watch over the grounds, and a “Lady in White”, similar to the one reportedly seen in Black Star Canyon. Strange occurrences experienced by visitors to the mission include the mission bells ringing at odd hours, ectoplasmic mist and orbs, shadowy figures in the cemetery, and apparitions of the ghosts themselves.

Original Old Towne Orange
[source]

Old Towne Orange– Dating back to the 1864, Orange is one of the oldest Orange County cities, and the square-mile area surrounding the original plaza called Old Towne Orange Historic District still contains many of the original structures built after the city’s incorporation in 1888.Orange and its plaza is so pleasant during the day, that you may be surprised to learn that it comes with some macabre history and there are several ghosts that are said to haunt the area. HauntedOC hosts many ghost tours of Orange, showing guests the haunted hot spots.

The Yost Theatre

Yost Theatre in Santa Ana – The Yost Theatre is said to be one of the most haunted locations in Orange County and was even featured on the show Ghost Adventures. The Yost’s history dates back to the early 1900’s, and it has served as a vaudeville hall, concert venue, movie theater, church and the basement was even used as a jail. There are many spirits said to haunt the theater, which now hosts concerts, and guests have reported feeling sick, strange cold spots, and overall uneasiness.

Doombuggies in the Haunted Mansion

Disneyland - Yup, even the "Happiest Place on Earth" may have some ghosts, and not just the fun ones in the Haunted Mansion attraction. Several sinister experiences have been reported by guests in several parts of the park, including a weeping child at the end of the Haunted Mansion ride and a ghostly woman on the Matterhorn ride. Many believe that the spirits are either those who have died on the property or those whose ashes have been scattered by their bereaved families. Some even say that Walt Disney himself keeps watch over the park near his old apartment over the fire station on Main Street USA.

Plummer Auditorium

Downtown Fullerton– Another city with a haunted reputation is Fullerton, specifically the historic downtown district. The city's haunted locales include the Plummer Auditorium, where sightings of an angry woman spirit have been reported, the Fox Theater, where a weeping woman apparition has been seen/heard, and Villa del Sol (formerly Hotel California), where a local police officer claims to have witnessed a ghost at the bar and others have reported strange noises and occurrences. Haunted Fullerton Walking Tours gives tours of these haunted locations (and more) every October.

Have you explored any of these haunted locations in Orange County?

Do you have any other haunted or creepy places in Orange County to add to this list?

October's Vegan Cuts Snack Box (skeleton not included!)

I was excited to learn that Vegan Cuts’ monthly subscription snack box for the month of October would be curated by one of my absolute favorite vegan personalities, the Vegan Black Metal Chef! The Vegan Black Metal Chef (or VBMC) creates some awesome and easy vegan recipes and presents them in epic black metal music videos, complete with corpse paint and some wicked kitchen utensils that I am really jealous of! He writes all his own black metal music, and sings/growls/screams his recipes in his videos (SWOON!). So how perfect that the Vegan Black Metal Chef hand-picked some of the snacks for Vegan Cuts during the spooky month of Halloween!

I have been a fan of Vegan Cuts’ snack boxes for quite some time now, and think they are a wonderful way of discovering and trying new vegan snack products. I think their snack boxes are especially great if you live somewhere that doesn't have a lot of vegan options or you just like getting your snack fix delivered directly to your door. I also like that they sometimes have different vegan celebrities hand-pick items for the boxes, which give the boxes a more personal feel. Plus you get to discover the favorite snacks of some pretty awesome vegans!

This October I was stoked to discover three favorite vegan snacks of the Vegan Black Metal Chef along with snacks handpicked from the Vegan Cuts team, and I wasn't disappointed! This month’s box is packed full of awesome vegan snack products, from chips to chocolate-covered coconut to a chocolate square to a soda! Let’s take a closer look at the items that were included in the October 2014 Vegan Cuts’ snack box:

Flamous Organic Chips (I got their Sprouted Multigrain Zatar Chips) - Love this brand! They are 100% organic, non-GMO, gluten-free chips that are perfect on their own or dipped in salsa or hummus. This is one of the items hand-picked by the VBMC.

TCHO Dark Chocolate - Organic and Fair-Trade Certified dark chocolate with bright berry notes and hints of cherry. This is another snack hand-picked by the VBMC.

Tasty Brand Organic Smoothie Fruit Snacks - Delicious vegan gummies that contain no gelatin, no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives! They are organic, non-GMO, gluten free and made with real fruit juice! This is the third yummy product selected by the VBMC.

Veggie Elite Protein by MRM - This protein powder packs 24 grams of non-GMO complete protein!

Pop Art Rosemary Truffle Gourmet Popcorn - Mmmmmm, aromatic rosemary paired with Italian Black Summer Truffles creates an indulgent popcorn snack. This was my favorite item and now I must hunt this product down in stores!

Coconut Organics' Coconut Chips (I got Dark Chocolate) - These superfood snacks are made with raw cacao, coconut sugar and toasted coconut with a touch of organic vanilla and sea salt. It may taste decadent, but it is full of fiber, healthy fats and overall goodness!

Numi Organic Teas (I received Chocolate Spice Black Tea and Chocolate Rooibos Herbal Teasan) - I love chocolate teas! And Numi makes the best around, with no weird added ingredients - just Fair Trade Certified organic cacao powder, organic black tea and roobios and organic spices.

Zevia Soda (I got Ginger Ale) - Ditch the sugar and try this naturally sweetened soda, which uses stevia! I like this alternative to regular diet soda, which has zero calories without all the nasty artificial sweeteners.

Luv You PB&J Bar - This bar is made with only three ingredients - organic peanuts, organic raisins and Pink Himalayan sea salt, It is very similar to Larabars, and even more delicious! It is even shaped into a cute heart!

Want this box? You can still order it here (as long as supplies last!)!

A Vegan Cuts Snack Box subscription costs $19.95 per month, with free shipping within the US. International shipping is available for an additional $8 to Canada and $15 to the rest of the world. You can order this snack box HERE! Vegan Cuts also offers a beauty box – details for that here!

The haunting photography of Christopher McKenney is dark and surreal. I love how his images evoke conflicting reactions of both awe and repulsion. His photos deeply resonate with me, and to me speak of the impermanence of people and of life itself, and how little by little, day by day, it diminishes until there is nothing left.

McKenney told art blog IGNANT that the photos happened when he found himself in the woods with nothing but a sheet, a chair, and a frame in 2012. He started taking photos with the props, then Photoshopped parts of his body out later, creating his self-made ghosts. He explained his art further to IGNANT, "I like taking away identity when photographing and to leave people thinking. I only make the photos I do to express myself and what other people see or think is up to them, as long as I make them feel anything I’m ok with that."

Here are a few of my favorite McKenney photographs, which I think fit perfectly with this year's haunting 31 Days of Halloween theme:

I have shared the stunning videos from YouTube user Nocturnaloner in past countdowns (check out Kingdom of Witches and All Hallow's Eve), but I just recently discovered a new video from him/her that I must have missed last year! It is a fun sing-a-long lyric video to the song "Ghoul's Night Out" by the Misfits!

This fun animated video takes old school horror posters, one-sheets, comic books and ads and replaces their titles with lyrics from the Misfits' song. It is a really cool effect, and creates an eye-catching and unique lyric video. You can view it in its entirely below:

Did you know pumpkins are packed with vitamins, antioxidants, anti-aging properties, fiber, minerals and more?! This squash's health benefits are plentiful and varied, and this is the perfect season to make all kinds of dishes with them! I've already shared a few recipes that utilize pumpkins as the star ingredient, but here is another one of my favorites!

Pumpkin Pie Overnight Oats are super-easy to make, plus you can prepare them the night before so you can dig in first thing in the morning. Not only do they feature pumpkin, but the rest of the ingredients are really healthy, too, and will help you get a jump start on your busy October morning.

Besides breakfast, these can be used as a pick-me-up throughout the day as well and are perfect for kids as a pre-trick or treat snack!

You can find the delicious recipe on the always incredible Oh She Glow's website!

By the way, you should definitely pick up The Oh She Glows Cookbook!
