Happy first day of Creepmas, an annual tradition that runs from December 1st to December 13th. During these 13 days, a group of like-minded bloggers infuse some much needed spooky spirit into the holiday season by putting a spooky spin on the horror-days.

Since I missed this year's 31 days of Halloween, I plan on throwing myself whole-heartedly into the 13 days of Creepmas. I'm gonna be sharing some killer ghoulish gift guides, Christmas ghost stories, dark holiday decor, and much more.

Every year I like to kick off Creepmas by sharing some of my favorite posts from past years. I've been participating since 2011, so I have plenty of ghoulish goodies for you to check out, with more on the way. The longer days and cold nights are perfectly suited for reading spooky stories. It recalls past traditions from Victorian and Edwardian times when friends and family would gather on Christmas Eve and spend the night by the crackling fire telling each other spooky stories. Let's keep this wonderful tradition alive this holiday season with the following collections of holiday-themed horrors that you can read this Creepmas!

These books of short Christmas ghost stories would make a perfect gift, either to yourself or your favorite horror reader. It would also be fun to take these home for the holidays to read them to your friends and family as you spend time together - which will infuse your gatherings with some must-needed spookiness this time of year!

Check out these Haunting Holiday Books to Read for Christmas:

Spirits of the Season: Christmas Hauntings- Festive cheer turns to maddening fear in this new collection of seasonal hauntings, presenting the best Christmas ghost stories from the 1850s to the 1960s. The traditional trappings of the holiday are turned upside down as restless spirits disrupt the merry games of the living, Christmas trees teem with spiteful pagan presences, and the Devil himself treads the boards at the village pantomime. As the cold night of winter closes in and the glow of the hearth begins to flicker and fade, the uninvited visitors gather in the dark in this distinctive assortment of haunting tales.

Haunted Christmas: Yuletide Ghosts And Other Spooky Holiday HappeningsIn plenty of time for the holidays, here is a gathering of thirty tales of ghosts, hauntings, and other paranormal happenings purported to have taken place on or around Christmas, or that are otherwise related to this holiday. By a long-time believer in the paranormal who in the introduction tells the story of her own Christmas ghost, Haunted Christmas.

Christmas Ghost Stories: A Collection of Winter Tales - No Christmas stocking will be complete without the "scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago" promised by this tantalizing collection of dark, fantastical and romantic "winter tales" from the pen of horror writer Mark Onspaugh. Sometimes funny, sometimes scary and occasionally bittersweet, this collection of Christmas Ghost Stories is perfect fare for sharing aloud by the fire or cuddling with someone (or something!) toasty on a moonless December night.

Classic Ghost Stories: Spooky Tales to Read at Christmas - The great writers of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, from Elizabeth Gaskell to Rudyard Kipling, also produced some of the most influential ghost stories ever written, shaping the conventions of the form for generations of writers to follow. Collected here are some of the most iconic of these Victorian ghost stories, from Charles Dickens'"The Signalman" to M.R. James'"A Warning to the Curious", alongside more unexpected contributions from masters of the form such as J.S. Le Fanu and Algernon Blackwood.

Ghosts of Christmas Past: A Chilling Collection of Modern and Classic Christmas Ghost Stories - Who knows what haunts the night at the dark point of the year? This collection of seasonal chillers looks beneath Christmas cheer to a world of ghosts and horrors, mixing terrifying modern fiction with classic stories by masters of the macabre. From Neil Gaiman and M. R. James to Muriel Spark and E. Nesbit, there are stories here to make the hardiest soul quail.

The Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories - During the Victorian era, it became traditional for publishers of newspapers and magazines to print ghost stories during the Christmas season for chilling winter reading by the fireside or candlelight. Now for the first time thirteen of these tales are collected here, including a wide range of stories from a diverse group of authors, some well-known, others anonymous or forgotten. Readers whose only previous experience with Victorian Christmas ghost stories has been Charles Dickens’s "A Christmas Carol" will be surprised and delighted at the astonishing variety of ghostly tales in this volume. The first-ever collection of Victorian Christmas ghost stories, culled from rare 19th-century periodicals.

The Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories Volume Two - Following the popularity of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (1843), Victorian newspapers and magazines frequently featured ghost stories at Christmas time, and reading them by candlelight or the fireside became an annual tradition. This second volume of Victorian Christmas ghost stories contains fifteen tales, most of which have never been reprinted. They represent a mix of the diverse styles and themes common to Victorian ghost fiction and include works by once-popular authors like Grant Allen and Eliza Lynn Linton as well as contributions from anonymous or wholly forgotten writers. This volume also features a new introduction by Prof. Allen Grove.

The Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories, Volume Three - Seeking to capitalize on the success of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol (1843), Victorian newspapers and magazines frequently featured ghost stories at Christmas time, and reading them by candlelight or the fireside became an annual tradition, a tradition Valancourt Books is pleased to continue with our series of Victorian Christmas ghost stories. This third volume contains twenty tales, most of them never before reprinted. They represent a mix of the diverse styles and themes common to Victorian ghost fiction and include works by once-popular authors like Ellen Wood and Charlotte Riddell as well as contributions from anonymous or wholly forgotten writers. This volume also features a new introduction by Prof. Simon Stern.

Fireside Ghost Stories for Christmas Eve: An Anthology of Winter Horror Tales- Enclosed in this volume are tales of dark winter nights and harrowing encounters between the worlds of Man and the Hereafter. There are tales of cursed antiquities, otherworldly toy stores, possessed dolls, deals with the devil, and murderous cabin fever. I hope your Christmas is – as M. R. James put it “may be the cheerfuller for a story-book” which takes you back to a different world

'Tis the season for some killer holiday horror movies! I love browsing streaming services this time of year for seasonal horror flicks, and this year we have quite a few to choose from on Hulu, Shudder, Amazon Prime, and Netflix. Below I've rounded up some that are available on these streaming platforms now or are coming soon to stream. Don't have these streaming services or prefer physical media? No problem, as I've included links to each film's Amazon when possible.

Check out the Christmas Horror Movies to Stream Now:

                              HULU

Into the Dark: A Nasty Piece of Work (December 6th) - This new Into the Dark entry takes place on Christmas and will arrive to Hulu on December 6th. A mid-level employee must beat his professional rival in a violent competition in order to get his Christmas bonus. I'm really looking forward to this one!

Anna and the Apocalypse - A zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven - at Christmas - forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones. This is a fun and heartfelt film!

Pooka! - This was last year's Into the Dark Christmas film, and I loved it! Christmas is coming up, so a struggling actor gets a holiday season job as a character in a plush suit to promote the hottest toy of the year, “Pooka.” At first it’s a fun and friendly distraction, but he slowly develops two personalities-one when he’s in the suit, and one that’s outside it-as Pooka slowly starts to take possession of him.

Rare Exports - In this darkly comic gem, it's Christmas Eve in northern Finland, and an archaeological dig has just unearthed Santa Claus. But this Santa isn't one you want coming to town. This is a creepy and wonderful import - definitely give it a watch this season!

Saint - An original and delightfully gruesome slasher film, Saint re-imagines jolly old Saint Nick as a murderous bishop fulfilling a grisly prophecy under the December full moon. A local teen sets out on a bloody, high-energy battle to save Amsterdam from the wrathful "Sinterklaas" and his minions. Warning: It looks like this is the English dub version, try to find one with the original language track! Other than that, this is great slasher film with a holiday twist and a fun take on the Sinterklaas legend.

                              SHUDDER

All the Creatures Were Stirring - The joyful spirit of Christmas takes one dark turn after another in this horror anthology, from sadistic office parties and last-minute shopping nightmares to vengeful stalkers and immortal demons. This anthology is a bit hit or miss, but worth a watch.

Christmas Evil- A toy-maker who revels in the Christmas spirit suffers a mental break when his work is met with hypocrisy and cynicism and goes on a yuletide killing spree. This is a gritty Christmas classic with some dark humor thrown in.

Better Watch Out - One holiday night, a babysitter must defend herself and her 12-year-old charge when unwelcome intruders announce their arrival. One of my favorite newer holiday horror films and one I look forward to re-watching every year.

A Christmas Horror Story - Not even Santa Claus is safe from the evil that descends on Bailey Downs, a small town that is suddenly plagued with malevolent spirits, zombie elves and Krampus in this horror anthology film. Another newer film that has become a must-watch during the horrordays!

Black Christmas (1974) - As winter break begins, a group of sorority sisters begin to receive anonymous, lascivious phone calls. The women soon begin to suspect they are being threatened by a killer, but no one realizes just how close the killer is. My favorite Christmas horror movie and still shocking to this day!

Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 - The younger sibling of the teenager who killed while dressed as Santa carries on in his brother's bloody footsteps. A fun, sometimes silly sequel to Silent Night, Deadly Night. It recaps the first film extensively, so no need to have seen the first film (though I would recommend that one, too!).

Deadly Games (a.k.a. 3615 Code Père Noël, Dial Code Santa Claus) - A resourceful child is left alone with his fragile grandfather on Christmas Eve. When a killer dressed as Santa Claus breaks into their home, Thomas does whatever it takes to defend his home and grandfather. I'm looking forward to watching this - I hear it is the OG Home Alone!

Joe Bob's Red Christmas (December 13th) - Joe Bob Briggs will host another live stream triple bill of holiday related horror on Friday, December 13th, on Shudder in U.S. and Canada. The live show starts at 9pm EST and will be available on demand later in the month. Can't wait what Joe Bob picks for his Christmas show!

                              NETFLIX

Red Christmas - A widow and her bickering family gather at her remote estate on Christmas Eve. She must soon protect them all from a hideously deformed killer who's out for bloody revenge. Ugh, I really hated this film, but pickings are slim on Netflix. Watch at your own risk.

Holidays - This anthology that puts a horror spin on different holidays features a segment about Christmas starring Seth Green. It isn't the strongest story in the anthology, but it is still pretty fun.

                              AMAZON PRIME

A Cadaver Christmas - United by terrifying and bizarre circumstances, the janitor, the drunk, the bartender, the cop, his perp, and the student security guard must fight to undo the professor's work. This is a quite fun indie feature!

Slay Belles - On Christmas Eve, three cosplaying women accidentally unleash Krampus and team up with Santa Claus to save the world! This is a newer release and such a hidden gem! It has so much heart and I had such a fun time rooting for the three cosplayers!

Rare Exports - As well as streaming on Hulu, this Finnish tale is also streaming on Amazon Prime. Again, it is highly recommended!

The Children - A relaxing Christmas vacation turns into a terrifying fight for survival as the children begin to turn on their parents. This is quite an English chiller and I loved the snowy landscape where all the horror breaks loose.

All Through the House - A deranged masked Santa-Slayer comes to town for some yuletide-terror. He leaves behind a bloody trail of mutilated bodies and hunts his way to the front steps of the town's most feared and notorious home. A surprisingly solid slasher, especially considering it is a newer movie.

Dead End - It's Christmas Eve and like every year, the Harringtons take a trip to their in-laws to celebrate the holidays. Taking an unfamiliar shortcut, Mr. Harrington makes the biggest mistake of his life, leading his family down a terror-filled road with no end. Love this underrated film! Very spooky and the cast (including Ray Wise and Lin Shaye) is wonderful.

Jack Frost - When his prison transport collides with a truck full of "genetic material," condemned serial killer Jack Frost is inexplicably transformed into a terrifying, murderous snowman. This movie is awful in the best way possible.

Black Christmas (1974) - Amazon Prime also has this film streaming for free, along with Shudder. Again, highly recommended!

Secret Santa - A group of eccentric college kids, struggling to get through their hectic exams, decide to throw a holiday party, adding a Secret Santa exchange for fun. Little do they know a killer is in town and has made a special list and each one of them has a special present waiting for them. This low-budget slasher is probably what you expect, but it has its moments.

What are you watching this holiday season?

I am one of those people that adores wall calendars - I even have multiple calendars in different rooms of my house! I am a very visual person, and wall calendars work so much better for me instead of using my phone calendar or even a planner. I love the physicality of wall calendars and how I can see right in front of my face if I have an event or appointment scheduled. I grew up organizing my life on calendars, so from the time I was pretty young I would gleefully look forward to receiving a calendar for Christmas.

I love continuing this tradition and gifting myself a brand new calendar around the holidays. I always take great pleasure in picking out the next year's calendar for myself, which is why I love sharing creepy calendars with you every year! In a way, it is kinda like we are shopping together for calendars, and how fun is that?!

So anyways, if you are old-skool nerdy like me, take a look at 20 creepy-cute calendars I've had my eye on and let me know which one is your favorite!

Do you love calendars as much as I do? Which of the above is your favorite?

                              Until next time, stay spooky!

One of my favorite things about the holiday season is putting up and decorating my Creepmas tree! My Christmas tree is black, and I decorate it in Halloween colors and spooky ornaments. I'm always on the look out for new unique, gothic ornaments I can add to my tree, and I love sharing my finds with you, my fellow darklings!

During the horrordays, many people focus on watching Christmas-themed horror movies but tend to forget how many Christmas-themed horror television episodes there are. I love holiday horror TV episodes since they are bite-sized pieces of holiday fear and I can fit in watching them pretty much anytime! If you think about it, this is perfect since we are all so busy this time of year and sometimes don't have the time to watch a whole film.

If you're looking for dark Christmas stories, I have 13 memorable Christmas episodes from horror television series to recommend to you this Creepmas below:

                              1. "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas" The X-Files - On Christmas Eve, Mulder and Scully find themselves in a haunted house with two ghosts who are determined to prove just how lonely yuletide can be. This is my absolutely favorite Christmas episode - it manages to be spooky, heartfelt, and quirky! And you can never go wrong with Lily Tomlin and Ed Asner as the bickering, ghost couple!

                              2. "A Very Supernatural Christmas"Supernatural - Sam and Dean follow the trail of an Anti-Claus when victims are apparently pulled up the chimney never to be seen again. After a lead goes nowhere, the Winchesters learn the Anti-Claus is in fact a pair of old pagan gods who have assimilated into society and have found a new way of getting their yearly sacrifices. This is just a plain ol' fun, monster-of-the-week episode that has a few tricks up its sleeve and I love it! I love re-watching this every holiday season.

                              3. "Christmas With the Addams Family"The Addams Family - When a neighbor tells Wednesday and Pugsley there's no Santa Claus, Uncle Fester plays Santa to restore their Christmas spirit Unfortunately, he gets stuck in the chimney and is a no show, so the whole family works together to prove to the kids that there is indeed a Santa Claus. You can't go wrong with the Addams, and you know they do Christmas the Creepmas way! Lots of creepy good Christmas cheer for spooky kids in this episode.

                              4. "Unholy Night"American Horror Story: AsylumA murderous Santa wreaks havoc on Briarcliff. The killer Santa, portrayed by Ian McShane, is one of my favorites! He plays him with such chilling intensity and his is probably one of my favorite secondary characters from this season of AHS

                              5. "Seasons of Belief"Tales From the DarksideOn Christmas Eve, two children listen to their father's scary tale. Ok, this tale is kinda silly now, but the Grither (don't say his name!) messed me up as a kid!

                              6. "And All Through The House"Tales From the CryptA greedy woman makes the mistake of murdering her husband while an escaped mental patient dressed in a Santa Claus outfit is on the loose. One of the absolute Christmas classics, based on the same tale from the Tales from the Crypt anthology film. I love both, but included this one since the other isn't a TV episode.

                              7. "Amends"Buffy the Vampire SlayerBuffy hopes for a quiet Christmas, but Angel is tormented by visions of his past and the ghost of Jenny Calendar. This is a pretty heavy episode, as Angel is haunted by his violent past and we get a glimpse at how vicious Angelus really was.

                              8. "Night of the Meek"The Twilight Zone - After a derelict Santa Claus is fired on Christmas Eve, he finds a mysterious bag that gives out presents. With this bag he sets out to fulfill his one wish - to see the less fortunate inherit the bounties of Christmas. Such a heart-warming episode about redemption and the healing magic of Christmas.

                              9. "Twelve Days of Krampus"GrimmAfter a string of delinquent teens go missing, an old Wesen tale of an evil Santa who brings more than just a lump of coal may be the prime suspect. I remember I was so excited when this first aired, since the legend of Krampus was not as well-known as it is now.

                              10. "Truth Be Told"DexterThe Ice Truck Killer strikes again, leaving a bloody scene before Christmas at a holiday-themed park. Ahhhh Christmas in Miami means twinkly lights on palm trees, fake snow, and the Ice Truck Killer getting into the spirit at Santa's Land with wrapped gifts of body parts.

                              11. "Midwinter's Tale"Chilling Adventures of SabrinaAs the winter solstice approaches, Sabrina orchestrates an emotional séance with serious consequences, and Susie's merry plans turn menacing. I was so happy that the Yule Lads and Gryla (check out my article on 10 Christmas Monsters Who Aren't Krampus) were featured in this episode as well as the gorgeous Yule decor and lore featured throughout the episode.

                              12. "White Christmas"Black Mirror In a mysterious and remote snowy outpost, Matt and Potter share an interesting Christmas meal together, swapping creepy tales of their earlier lives in the outside world. This is such a bleak, cold Black Mirror episode, which is saying a lot since most episodes have that tone. However, there is just something so devastating about this episode. It is the perfect anti-Christmas episode!

                              13. "Santa Claus and the Tenth Avenue Kid"Alfred Hitchcock PresentsA larcenous store Santa helps change the ways of a potential delinquent. Though this isn't a creepy episode, it is a rather heartwarming one, and it has a hilarious intro by Hitch where he is bricking up his chimney to give Santa a surprise.

The Legend of the Christmas Spider

You may have seen spider ornaments on Christmas trees before, and may have just assumed they were a goth ornament or leftovers from Halloween, but did you know that spiders actually have a long history of being placed on Christmas trees due to Eastern European folk tales? The legend of the Christmas spider dates back to the late 1800s or early 1900s and is believed to be of Ukranian origin, though the story can also be found in parts of Germany, Poland, and Russia. It is also credited as being the origin of hanging tinsel on Christmas trees.

I love the story of the Christmas Spider and its message of charity and goodwill. The Christmas Spider celebrates kindness to all living things, the magic of giving, and those that work quietly in the background to bring joy to others. The legend of the Christmas Spider is as follows:

A poor, hardworking peasant woman lives in a small hut with her children. During Christmastime, the family cannot afford to decorate their Christmas tree (in some re-tellings, the widow ventures into the forest to find a small tree for her family, in others the tree grows inside their hut from a pine cone that took root in the hut's floor during the summer, and the children took care of and nourished the tree so it would grow in time for Christmas). In either variation, the tree is found to house a spider and her own babies. Instead of killing or removing the spider family, the human family shares the Christmas tree with the spiders. On Christmas Eve, the family is too poor to afford Christmas decorations and so they go to sleep disappointed by their bare tree. Early on Christmas morning, they wake up and are overjoyed to discover the tree covered with shimmering cobwebs, glittering gold and silver in the sunlight.

Nowadays, spiders are hung on Christmas trees as a reminder to spin magic for others and as a sign of good luck.

The Christmas Spider story is a wonderful one to share with your family this Creepmas - the storybook A Christmas Spider's Miracle by Trinka Hakes Noble is a great pick!

You can also get your very own Christmas spider ornament on Amazon!

Do you have a spider ornament on your tree?

Art Inspired By La Befana, The Italian Christmas Witch

To me, La Befana is an underappreciated Christmas figure that should be just as popular as Krampus! Originating in Italy, La Befana, aka the Christmas Witch, is a legend thousands of years old. As the story goes, an older woman lived in a village that the Magi passed through on their journey to deliver gifts to the newborn Jesus Christ. Many people followed the Magi with their own gifts to deliver to the newborn messiah, but this woman did not join them as she was too busy with her housework. Once she realized her mistake, she ran out of her house with her broom and presents to try to catch up to the Magi, but it was too late. Ever since then on the eve of January 6th, the Epiphany, the woman who would become La Befana flies from house to house on her broomstick, delivering all the gifts she wasn't able to give to the newborn Jesus to good children.

Living in an Italian household, I grew up with this story and looked forward to La Befana's visits every year (as long as I had been good!). I love everything La Befana still, and hers is one of my favorite Christmas legends. In honor of La Befana, I've rounded up some artwork inspired by her from a variety of artists. I am so glad her name is becoming more and more recognized and love sharing her story!

Check out art inspired by La Befana below:

                              Buon Natale and Buon Befana!

The word "witch" means different things to different people, but to me it simply means someone who is fiercely independent, empowered, creates their own magic, and has a fierce respect for nature and the elements. Of course, I also must acknowledge that witchcraft is rooting in history and different cultures, with each culture having different variations of what "witch" means to them.

With that being said, I've rounded up a list of creators whose wares will wow anyone who is witchy AF, from those deeply rooted in the spiritual side to others who just like to dip their toes in the magical pool. Wherever they land, below you will find gifts that will help bring out the magic in anyone!

I hope this gift guide gives you some bewitching gift ideas for those in your coven (or hey, for yourself!). You can find more witchy AF items on my Amazon gift guide!

The Trick or Treating Zombie Horse of Christmas, Mari Lwyd

One Christmas tradition that has always intrigued me is the Welsh wassailing folk custom centered around Mari Lwyd. This Welsh tradition is reportedly over 3,000 years old and is focused on Mari Lwyd ("gray mare" or "Blessed Mary" in other translations), a macabre figure of a skeletal horse head mounted on a stick, decorated with ribbons and jingling bells, and draped in a flowing white sheet (to hide the handler/puppeteer of Mari Lwyd). The eerie equine represents Death, and the only way to defeat the specter is to beat it in a battle of rhymes.

The Mari Llwyd at Llangynwyd in Glamorgan, led by Sianco'r Castell. The photograph was taken by Frederic Evans between 1904 and 1910 and published in E.C. Cawte's Ritual Animal Disguise: A Historical and Geographical Study of Animal Disguise in the British Isles

The Mari Lwyd is accompanied by groups of people going house to house, where the inhabitants are challenged to a rhyming battle. Traditionally, the Mari Lwyd and its group of people sing a traditional Welsh song, and the house owners respond in kind with songs, rhymes, insults, or riddles. This can go back and forth for a while, until the Mari Lwyd is let into the home for treats and drinks. It is like trick or treating for adults!

A postcard with a standard call and response in Welsh [image source]

As I mentioned above, the origin of Mari Lywd is said to date before Christianity and has it's roots in paganism. Though the beginnings of Mari Lwyd isn't really know, it has been a popular activity throughout Christmastime as well as New Years in Wales for a long time. In fact, the practice is alive and well today, and if you were to visit Wales this time of year you would certainly find Mari Lywd celebrations happening on the streets, especially at St. Fagan’s National History Museum every December and in the town of Chepstow in January.

Watch a vintage "pwnco" (aka the epic singing or rhyming battle) between a Mari Lwyd and homeowners below:

Looking for some holiday horror films to count down the remaining 13 days until Christmas but don't feel like watching the same old stuff? I wanted to share 13 lesser-known holiday horror films, including some new releases as well as some you may have missed or forgotten about. Watch one a day as a countdown to Christmas, or feel free to binge-watch or pick and choose as you please!

Below I've noted if the movies are available to stream as well as including links to the respective films' DVD/Blu-ray on Amazon as well.
                              1. Friday, December 13thA Nasty Piece of Work (available exclusively to stream on Hulu) - This is the newest entry into Hulu's Into the Dark series, and I really enjoyed its dark comedic tone and the performance by Julian Sands as a sadistic boss.
                              2. Saturday, December 14th - P2 - A woman working late on Christmas Eve gets trapped in a parking garage with a security guard who has been stalking her. I love Wes Bentley in this film, even if he does play a psycho.
                              3. Sunday, December 15th - Don't Open 'Til Christmas - It's Christmastime in London and a masked maniac is on the loose killing off Santa Clauses! This isn't the best film, but hey, it's got that Christmas spirit and it is one not many people have seen, so give it a go!
                              4. Monday, December 16th - Inside - You want to cut out all the saccharine holiday cheer? Just watch this French Extremity movie, which happens to be set on Christmas Eve!
                              5. Tuesday, December 17thTo All A Goodnight - Directed by David Hess (better known for his acting work in films like The Last House on the Left), this horror film features a Christmas slasher stalking a house of women much like Black Christmas
                              6. Wednesday, December 18th - Deadly Games aka aka Dial Code Santa Claus (available exclusively to stream on Shudder) - This little-seen French film pre-dates Home Alone and is kinda the same premise. A Rambo-obsessed young boy must protect his home from a killer Santa Claus by setting booby traps throughout his home.
                              7. Thursday, December 19th - All Through the House - (available to stream on Amazon Prime) - This '80s-style slasher came out just a few years ago, yet I don't hear many people talking about it. Sure, it's kinda a standard killer slasher flick, but it's surprisingly a fun watch nonetheless.
                              8. Friday, December 20th - Await Further Instructions - After a mysterious phenomenon traps them inside their house on Christmas, a series of increasingly disturbing instructions on TV lead a family into a cycle of paranoia and violence. This film certainly captures the trauma of family gatherings, and delves into some vicious body horror. This film isn't for everyone, but if you are looking for something different this holiday season, this may be it!
                              9. Saturday, December 21st - A Cadaver Christmas (available to stream on Amazon Prime) - Zombies for Christmas! This indie film is a ghoulish good time for the horrordays.
                              10. Sunday, December 22nd -  The Children - A Christmas holiday turns deadly when a family's children turn monstrous. Hey, if you ever need an excuse to not hang with your family's kids, just show your family this movie.
                              11. Monday, December 23rd - Slay Belles - I adore this indie film about three cosplayers facing off against Krampus with Santa's help; it has so much heart and is so much fun!
                              12. Tuesday, December 24thAnna and the Apocalypse (available to stream on Hulu and Amazon Prime) - This zombie musical is gory and hilarious, with some pretty heart-wrenching moments, too.
                              13. Wednesday, December 25th - Black Christmas (available to stream on Shudder) - This classic is a must-watch every Christmas for me - it still is every bit as creepy the 100th time I watch it as it was the first time!

You think that choosing 10 favorite films from 2019 is an easy task, but it really isn’t! There were so many great horror movies this year, I found it extremely hard to whittle it down to just the top 10. If I'm honest, I've been agonizing over this list for months (which is why I'm posting this so late!).

However, what is easy is recognizing that we were definitely not at a loss for great horror films in 2019. If you start exploring the horror genre in 2019, You'll see that there were some incredible gems released, from big studio films to smaller, independent films.

Of course, I haven’t seen every single horror film released this year (though I did make a very valiant effort), so I’m sure I’ve missed some excellent films. I’ve also seen other films that were on other top 10 lists, however they were personally disappointing to me, so obviously they won't appear on my list.

A few things to note before we begin:
                              1. This is a personal list of MY top 10 films of the year. That being said, I don't mind hearing about your favorites in the comments as long as the discussion remains civil.
                              2. I have only included films that are readily available (no festival releases) and that had releases in the United States in 2019.
                              3. Though I wish I had the time, there is no way I could see every horror film released in 2019, so my list may be missing some good titles.
My Top 10 Horror Films of 2019

10.) Satanic Panic - I had such a blast watching this horror comedy from Chelsea Stardust about a pizza delivery girl who must out-smart a group of rich Satanists that wish to sacrifice her. This film was full of energy, bloody gags, and just so much fun to watch start to finish!

9.) The Lighthouse - I really did not expect to like this (though I adore director Robert Eggers previous film, The Witch), but I ended up really enjoying its dark descent into madness, surprisingly hilarious humor, and its stark black and white cinematography. It left me feeling shocked and entertained.

8.) Starfish - A woman pieces together clues left on mixtapes by her deceased dead friend to unleash a signal that will either save or condemn the world as the apocalypse looms. Directed by A.T. White, I thought this was such a beautiful exploration of grief, loss, and loneliness, coupled with a fantastic end-of-world setting (complete with creepy creatures).

7.) Ready or Not - Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka the Radio Silence collective), this film is about a bride who marries into a peculiar family who made their wealth from board games and must play a particularly bloody initiation game. It was so fun, gory, hilarious, and featured a kick-ass final girl played by Samara Weaving who I cheered for the entire time.

6.) The Head Hunter - This film was unexpectedly emotional, and it tells the tale of a Medieval-ish era man who kills monsters and seeks revenge against the one that killed his daughter. It is a low-budget film, but you seriously can't tell - it never shows too much of the monsters but still shows just enough to be satisfying. And it actually does some really neat things with the main monster that I thought was so creative! I can't wait to see what director Jordan Downey does next.

5.) Daniel Isn't Real - I love when horror films explore real-life issues, and this one tackles mental illness and toxic masculinity in such a devastating and satisfying manner. Directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer, the film is about a teenage boy's imaginary friend who shows up after a traumatic incident to "protect" the boy, but things soon spiral out of control.

4.) Braid - This came out at the very beginning of the year, and it still stuck with me. Two women on the run decide to rob their mentally unstable and wealthy childhood friend, but must play a deadly game with her first. This movie directed by Mitzi Peirone was compelling, with fantastic performances from the female leads, and some gorgeously hallucinogenic sequences.

3.) Piercing - Is it weird that I had fun watching this film? I mean, it is about a man who leaves his family and stays at a hotel because he wants to kill a sex worker. But it is so skillfully, and dare I say playfully directed by Nicolas Pesce that it left me joyful at its perversity! It is a bit abstract, and definitely isn't for everyone, but I thought it was brilliant.

2.) Us - I thought this film was brilliant from the first time I saw it in the theater - it was so different and presented such a unique story. It also had moments that were so funny and scenes that will become absolutely iconic (how 'bout that "F*ck the Police" scene?!) as well as tackling issues of race and class. Jordan Peele did it again with his follow-up to Get Out.

1.) Doctor Sleep - My number one film of the year is Mike Flanagan's Doctor Sleep, based on the novel by Stephen King. I had read the book before seeing the film, and still the film impressed me. It was beautiful, heart-wrenching, terrifying, and gave us my favorite villain of the year with Rose the Hat (kudos to Rebecca Ferguson for her sinister performance). Ewan McGregor's performance as the grown-up Danny Torrance was perfect and I thought all the actors that re-created scenes from Kubrick's The Shining film were spot-on. The film even struck the perfect balance between the content of King's books and Kubrick's film. When I left the theater after watching the film, I felt an immense feeling of satisfaction and joy, as it was pretty near perfect.

Honorable Mentions: MidsommarCrawl, In the Tall Grass (available on Netflix), Hagazussa (also available on Shudder), Tigers Are Not Afraid (also available on Shudder), Lords of Chaos, Bliss, Wounds (available on Hulu), One Cut of the Dead(also available on Shudder), Knife + Heart (also available on Shudder), Sweetheart (also available on Netflix), The Perfection (available on Netflix), and All That We Destroy (part of Hulu's Into the Dark series).

My Favorite Horror TV Shows of 2019

I must also make mention of the phenomenal TV shows we saw this year: Marianne from France premiered on U.S. Netflix this year and was some of the creepiest and most unsettling horror I saw this year. I also really enjoyed some other TV shows on Netflix - Two Sentence Horror Stories is an anthology series that was excellent, Typewriter from India was so compelling and creepy, and season 2 of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was fun. The first season of What We Do In the Shadows (now streaming on Hulu) was to die for and one of the funniest things I saw this year. I also really enjoyed NOS4A2, adapted from Joe Hill's fantastic novel (available on Shudder and Hulu). One of my absolute favorite TV shows this year was Castle Rock, which blew me out of the water with its Annie Wilkes' and Jerusalem's Lot storyline. Shudder's re-imagining of Creepshow was hit or miss, but overall pretty enjoyable. Love that there were so many great horror TV shows in 2019, and it looks like we will get more in 2020!

I think that 2019 was a stellar year for horror films (so much so that I had such a hard time narrowing down my favorite films into a top 10 list!), so 2020 has a lot to live up to. I've been keeping my ear to the ground to catch any buzz on upcoming horror films, and I think I've rounded up quite a big list of horror films I'm excited to see. When I do these kinds of lists, I really delve deep into research, checking festival schedules, scouring message boards and horror groups, listening to horror podcasts, reading horror sites, and talking to friends in the horror community to see what upcoming horror films people are most excited about. I definitely do my homework, and I try to keep up with the horror outlook all year long. I'm excited to report that 2020 looks like it will continue the trend of quality, varied horror we've seen in past years!

Before I share over 60+ horror movies I'm looking forward to, a few things to keep in mind:
                              • Some films appeared on last year's list - though they may have been released at festivals in 2019, 2020 is where they will have their proper, wide release in the United States so I am including some of those again on this list.
                              • I started compiling this list months ago, so some of the films listed have already been released. Despite this, I've still included some of these on this list.
                              • The films below are arranged chronologically by release date, but keep in mind the release dates listed may change.
                              • At the time I wrote this, some films' release dates are yet to be determined, and it's possible their release dates could get pushed to a 2021 or beyond release.
                              • As I start seeing films on this list, I'll be updating this post with quick thoughts on the movie.
                              • Finally, just a reminder that this is a personal list and in no way comprehensive of all horror films coming in 2020. I am looking forward to all of the surprise films I'm not even aware of yet!
If you have other horror films you are looking forward to that aren't mentioned below, please feel free to leave a comment and let me know what they are!

Underwater (January 10, 2020) - Disaster strikes more than six miles below the ocean surface when water crashes through the walls of a drilling station. Led by their captain, the survivors realize that their only hope is to walk across the sea floor to reach the main part of the facility. But they soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when they come under attack from mysterious and deadly creatures that no one has ever seen. This is out in theaters now and I'm looking forward to checking out this aquatic horror starring Kristen Stewart.

The Turning (January 24, 2020) - A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the deaths of their parents. A modern take on Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw. The trailers for this film have me a bit worried, but I'm hoping Floria Sigismondi's direction coupled with performances by Mackenzie Davis and Finn Wolfhard will do justice to the classic story. This is out now, and the reviews have not been kind.

Color Out of Space (January 24, 2020) - After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism that infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare. This Lovecraftian movie starring Nicolas Cage has been on the top of my to-watch list as it's been getting solid buzz and looks like a hallucinogenic nightmare from director Richard Stanley. This is out in limited release now, and will be released on VOD and on Blu-ray at the end of February.

Gretel + Hansel (January 31, 2020) - A girl and her younger brother unwittingly stumble upon the house of an evil witch in the dark woods. Director Osgood Perkins returns with another gorgeous-looking horror film based on the fairy tale. This doesn't look like it will have a happy ending though...my favorite kind of story! And IT's Sophia Lillis is starring, and I can't wait to see more from her.

Come to Daddy (February 7, 2020) - A man in his thirties travels to a remote cabin to reconnect with his estranged father. This dark horror comedy stars Elijah Wood and is directed by Ant Timpson and looks like it will be a twisted descent into family trauma and horror.

The Lodge (February 7, 2020) - During a family retreat to a remote winter cabin over the holidays, the father is forced to abruptly depart for work, leaving his two children in the care of his new girlfriend, Grace. Isolated and alone, a blizzard traps them inside the lodge as terrifying events summon specters from Grace's dark past. I'm so glad this film from Goodnight Mommy directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala is finally getting a release - it promises to be a dark, bleak movie.

After Midnight (February 14, 2020) - When his long suffering girlfriend disappears suddenly, leaving a cryptic note as her only explanation, Hank's comfortable life and his sanity begin to crack. Then, from the woods surrounding his house, something terrible starts trying to break in. Director, writer, and actor Jeremy Gardner stars alongside Brea Grant in this romantic monster movie just in time for Valentine's Day, and with that I'm sold!

VFW (February 14, 2020) - A group of war veterans must defend their local VFW post and an innocent teen against a deranged drug dealer and his relentless army of punk mutants. This film by Joe Begos has an incredible cast and a premise that promises lots of violence and thrills. This looks badass!

Fantasy Island (February 14, 2020) - The enigmatic Mr Roarke makes the secret dreams of his lucky guests come true at a luxurious but remote tropical resort, but when the fantasies turn into nightmares, the guests have to solve the island's mystery in order to escape with their lives. This new Blumhouse movie is a remake of the old Fantasy Island TV show (which I've never seen), but gives it a darker storyline. I'm not entirely sold on the premise from the trailer alone, but hoping this will surprise me.

Brahms: The Boy II (February 21, 2020) - After a family moves into the Heelshire Mansion, their young son soon makes friends with a life-like doll called Brahms. I wasn't a big fan of The Boy, so I don't have much faith in this follow up starring Katie Holmes. However, I'll give it a shot if looks prove to be deceiving.

The Invisible Man (February 28, 2020) - When Cecilia's abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see. I love, love, love the direction this updated Universal monster story is taking! I'm excited that Leigh Whannel is at the helm and that Elisabeth Moss is starring - the subject matter seems especially relevant, showing that the real monsters are human.

Guns Akimbo (February 28, 2020) - An ordinary guy named Miles (Daniel Radcliffe) suddenly finds himself forced to fight a gladiator-like battle for a dark website that streams the violence for viewers. He must fight heavily armed Nix (Samara Weaving) and also save his kidnapped ex-girlfriend. Perhaps this isn't exactly straight horror, but it looks like quite a bit of madcap fun,, and I am loving everything Samara Weaving has done lately, so I can't wait to see her as a bad-ass killer-gamer!

Swallow (March 6, 2020) - Hunter, a newly pregnant housewife, finds herself increasingly compelled to consume dangerous objects. As her husband and his family tighten their control over her life, she must confront the dark secret behind her new obsession. This indie film looks like it will be a clever and subversive body-horror with lots of gross-out gags.

The Vast of Night (March 13, 2020) - In the twilight of the 1950s, two youths seek the source of a mysterious frequency that has descended upon a town in New Mexico, in Andrew Patterson's pitch-perfect sci-fi thriller. I love historical horror films, and this one set during the space-race looks like it will be very Twilight Zone-esque.

A Quiet Place: Part II (March 20, 2020) - Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path. I'm intrigued in this sequel, but it looks like it will focus more on the human monsters who are also out in the world surviving rather than focus on the creatures themselves.

Vivarium (March 27, 2020) - A young couple (Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg) looking for the perfect home find themselves trapped in a mysterious labyrinth-like neighborhood of identical houses. I take a sick delight suburban-horror films, so I am very much looking forward to this!

Saint Maude (March 27, 2020) - Follows a pious nurse who becomes dangerously obsessed with saving the soul of her dying patient. Directed by Rose Glass, this is one of my most-anticipated films of the year. It looks devilishly dark!

The New Mutants (April 3, 2020) - Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves. Wow, so happy this is finally getting a release - I've been waiting for its release for several years! Here's hoping it is worth the wait.

Antlers (April 17, 2020) - A small-town Oregon teacher and her brother, the local sheriff, become entwined with a young student harboring a dangerous secret with frightening consequences. This is another one I have been waiting to see and have high hopes for! It looks creepy AF and looks like it may do the wendigo legend justice!

Promising Young Woman (April 17, 2020) - A young woman, traumatized by a tragic event in her past, seeks out vengeance against men who cross her path. Written and directed by Emerald Fennell (showrunner of Killing Eve, one of the best films on TV!), this looks like a clever, wicked tale of revenge. I am so, so, SO excited to see this one!!

Antebellum (April 24, 2020) - Successful author Veronica (Janelle Monae) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it's too late. The trailers are keeping the details of this film under wraps (besides the fact that it's from the producer of Get Out and It), but the mystery makes me even more interested in checking it out.

Untitled Saw Movie (May 15, 2020) - Possibly under the title of The Organ Donor, this re-imagining, remake, reboot, or possible sequel to the Saw films will star Chris Rock, who also came up with the story for the film and Samuel L. Jackson. I'm just in it for the spectacle of seeing Chris Rock in a Saw movie!

Fear Street (June 5, 2020) - A murder mystery shakes up the town of Shadyside, Ohio. Feature adaptation of R.L. Stine's book series. My pre-teen years are calling, and saying ummmmmm, YES please!! I lived off R.L. Stine's Fear Street series when I was younger, so I can't wait to check out this film, which (squeeeeeeee) is just the first film - the second and third installments are also supposed to release in 2020! Plus, I'm excited that Leigh Janiak, who brought us the luminous Honeymoon, is writing and directing!

Candyman (June 12, 2020) - A "spiritual sequel" to the 1992 horror film that returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began. No, Tony Todd won't be returning to the titular role, but I am still stoked for this sequel, as I think it will explore relevant issues we are facing today. It also is directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele

The Purge 5 (July 10, 2020) - Well, we don't know much about this next Purge film, but hopefully it will be a good summer popcorn flick if nothing else.

Morbius (July 31, 2020) - Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but when his experiment goes wrong, he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead. I'm usually not into comic book adaptations, but Jared Leto as a vampire? Yes, please!

Malignant (August 14, 2020) - Not much is known about this upcoming horror film from director James Wan, written by Wan and Ingrid Bisu, except that it is going to be an homage to Italian giallo films! James Wan and giallo?! I cannot wait!

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (September 11, 2020) - Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren try to uncover the truth behind a murderer's claim of demonic possession. I could watch Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga play the Warrens every day, so I am stoked to have another Conjuring film to look forward to! And I'm intrigued by the case they are tackling this time around...

Last Night in Soho (September 25, 2020) - A young girl, passionate in fashion design, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences. Edgar Wright is directing this film, and it was written by him and Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The premise sounds wild, and I can't wait to see Wright's return to horror!

Halloween Kills (October 16, 2020) - The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode continues in the next thrilling chapter of the Halloween series. I was pleasantly surprised by 2018's Halloween, so I'm excited to see what they do with this next film in the series.

The Witches (October 16, 2020) - Based on Roald Dahl's 1983 classic book The Witches, the story tells the scary, funny and imaginative tale of a seven year old boy who has a run in with some real life witches! Ok, perhaps this isn't "hard horror", but who wasn't messed up by the original Witches film as kids? This new adaptation features Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch and I hope it will mess up a whole new generation of kids!

Escape Room 2 (November 30, 2020) - Director Adam Robitel returns with a follow up to his surprise hit from last year - details are scarce at the moment, but we can expect lottsa fun killer traps, that's for sure!

                              Release Dates TBD:

The Pale DoorAfter a train robbery goes bad, two brothers leading a gang of cowboys must survive the night in a ghost town inhabited by a coven of witches. Witches? A ghost town? AND a Western??? Ooooooh I'm so in for this!!

Boyz in the WoodA wildly satirical coming-of-age adventure set in the Scottish Highlands, Boyz in the Wood is an anarchic cocktail of generational politics, hip-hop loving farmers, and hallucinogenic rabbit shites. I've only heard good things about this wacky survivalist horror film where the titular boyz face off against killers hunting them in the Highlands.

I'm Thinking of Ending ThingsAn unexpected detour causes a woman who is trying to figure out how to break up with her boyfriend to rethink her life. Directed by Charlie Kaufman based on the novel by Iain Reid and starring Toni Collette...I mean, do I need to say more? I haven't read the book yet, but it has a ton of buzz, and with these names attached the film itself is generating plenty of its own excitement.

The Collected - The third film in the Collector series and the follow up to 2012's The Collection by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. I think the Collector films are underrated, so I am looking forward to this third installment, even though it's been a minute since the last film.

SynchronicTwo New Orleans paramedics’ lives are ripped apart after encountering a series of horrific deaths linked to a designer drug with bizarre, otherworldly effects. Directors Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson have given us some trippy sci-fi films in the past, so I am looking forward to their next vision.

Castle Freak - A remake of the 1995 Stuart Gordon film, as well as a direct adaptation of HP Lovecraft’s The Outsider. Gordon's version is a pretty gritty and lurid tale, so I'm curious to see what kind of tone the remake will have - I'm hoping it will keep more to Lovecraft's original tale.

Peninsula - Peninsula takes place four years after Train to Busan as the characters fight to escape the land that is in ruins due to an unprecedented disaster. Who else is excited for some more Train to Busan zombie action from director Yeon Sang-ho?! I know I am!

We Summon the Darkness - Three best friends embark on a road trip to a heavy-metal show, where they bond with three aspiring musicians and head off to one of the girls’ country home for an afterparty. A night of fun and youthful debauchery takes a deadly turn as bodies begin to pile up, with each side thinking the other hides the killer. Director Marc Meyers' follow up to My Friend Dahmer promises a trip to the '80s, complete with metal music and satanic panic!

I Saw a Man with Yellow EyesA teenage girl living with schizophrenia begins to suspect her neighbor has kidnapped a child. Her parents try desperately to help her live a normal life, without exposing their own tragic secrets, and the only person who believes her is Caleb – a boy she isn’t even sure exists. This sounds intriguing and I'm hoping it will intelligently address mental illness.

The Babysitter 2 - The sequel to the 2017 horror comedy, which was a frenetic and splatterific delight! Not sure if this will actually be released this year, but here's hoping!

Terrifier 2After being resurrected by a sinister entity, Art the Clown returns to Miles County where he must hunt down and destroy a teenage girl and her younger brother on Halloween night. I love Damien Leon's Art the Clown, including his first appearance in the anthology All Hallow's Eve as well as Terrifier! I am stoked for this sequel, which I'm hoping will be just as mean-spirited and vicious as the first!

Blood Quantum - The term "blood quantum" refers to a colonial blood measurement system that is used to determine an individual's Indigenous status, and is criticized as a tool of control and erasure of Indigenous peoples. The words take on even more provocative implications as the title of Jeff Barnaby's sophomore feature, which grimly depicts an apocalyptic scenario where in an isolated "Mi'gmaq" community discover they are the only humans immune to a zombie plague. As the citizens of surrounding cities flee to the "Mi'gmaq" reserve in search of refuge from the outbreak, the community must reckon with whether to let the outsiders in - and thus risk not just the extinction of their tribe but of humanity, period. This has a wonderful premise that has lots of promise, I just hope it gives us something new within the tired zombie sub-genre.

The Other LambA girl born into an all-female cult led by a man in their compound begins to question his teachings and her own reality. I am excited to see this feminist film directed by Małgorzata Szumowska, which sounds nightmarish.

The PlatformA vertical prison with one cell per level. Two people per cell. One only food platform and two minutes per day to feed from up to down. An endless nightmare trapped in The Pit. This sci-fi film from Spain sounds like it will tackle the issues of over-consumption and over-population in a novel and grotesque way.

RebeccaThe story follows a newly married young woman who, upon arriving at her husband’s imposing family estate on a bleak English coast, finds herself battling the shadow of his deceased first wife, the mysterious Rebecca, whose legacy continues to haunt the house. If anyone could do Daphne du Maurier's story justice (besides Hitchcock, obvs), it's director Ben Wheatley. I am looking forward to a grand gothic tale that hopefully lingers more on the dark corners of Manderlay rather than the romance.

Sea FeverThe crew of a West of Ireland trawler, marooned at sea, struggle for their lives against a growing parasite in their water supply. This sounds like a dread-filled, claustrophobic sea tale directed/written by Neasa Hardiman.

The Night House - A widow begins to uncover her recently deceased husband’s disturbing secrets. This sounds like a solid psychological, slow-burn thriller from director David Bruckner (who gave us solid segments in V/H/S and Southbound, plus the nail-biting full-length The Ritual). It premiered at Sundance this month and was snatched up really quickly by Fox's Searchlight Pictures. Here's hoping the rest of us get to see it this year!

The BanishingThe Banishing tells the story of the most haunted house in England. In the 1930s, a young reverend, his wife and daughter move into a manor with a horrifying secret. I love a good haunted house movie, and in the hands of director Christopher Smith (Triangle, Black Death, Severance, Creep) I think we are in for a real treat.

Maniac CopA murderous cop returns from the dead to patrol the New York City streets and kill those who turn to him for help. Ummm, a Maniac Cop remake directed by Nicolas Winding Refn?! This is going to be a trip!!

False Positive - There is no plot synopsis at this time, but this film is coming from studio A24 and is co-written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City), who is also starring in the film (that alone has me sold). It is said to be a psychological horror movie along the lines of a modern update of Rosemary's Baby.

Scare MeDuring a power outage, two strangers tell scary stories. The more Fred and Fanny commit to their tales, the more the stories come to life in the dark of a Catskills cabin. The horrors of reality manifest when Fred confronts his ultimate fear: Fanny is the better storyteller. This quirky horror comedy sounds like it has an original premise and I'm excited to see where it goes.

The ReckoningIn the aftermath of the Great Plague and amidst the subsequent witch-hunts against women, a young widow grapples with the tragic death of her husband in a society completely consumed by fear and death. Because she rejects the advances of her landlord, she is falsely accused of being a witch and thrown in jail for a crime she didn’t commit. She must endure physical persecution at the hands of England’s most ruthless witch-hunter and face her own inner demons as the devil himself starts to work his way into her mind. I'm such a sucker for horror period pieces, and combine that with a witch story AND director Neil Marshall's return to horror and I'm soooooo there!

Prisoners of the GhostlandThe film centers on notorious criminal Hero (Nicolas Cage) who is sent to rescue an abducted girl who has disappeared into a dark supernatural universe. They must break the evil curse that binds them and escape the mysterious revenants that rule the Ghostland, an East-meets-West vortex of beauty and violence. Director Sion Sono and Nicolas Cage?! Need I say more?! Well, this promises to be a wild ride!

Relic - When Edna, the elderly and widowed matriarch of the family, goes missing, her daughter Kay and granddaughter Sam travel to their remote family home to find her. Soon after her return, they start to discover a sinister presence haunting the house and taking control of Edna. This is premiering at Sundance Film Festival and is directed by Natalie Erika James. I'm hoping it will be just as creepy as The Taking of Deborah Logan was, since the premise sounds similar.

Amulet - Tomaz, an ex-soldier now homeless in London, is offered a place to stay at a decaying house, inhabited by a young woman and her dying mother. As he starts to fall for Magda, Tomaz cannot ignore his suspicion that something insidious might also be living alongside them. I do love the premise of this film, but besides the synopsis and poster, I don't know much about it. I hope it offers something different.

Run Sweetheart Run - A woman tries to get home alive after her blind date turns violent and goes chasing her through out Los Angeles. Directed by Shana Feste, I am glad to see another female voice lending itself to the horror genre, in what I think is a very real fear for many women.

Possessor - A thriller about an agent who works for a secretive organization that uses brain-implant technology to enable its operatives to inhabit other people’s bodies, ultimately driving them to carry out assassinations for high-paying clients. I really dug writer/director Brandon Cronenberg's (yes, son of David Cronenberg) Antiviral, so I am looking forward to this sci-fi thriller.

Lights Out 2 - The plot to the sequel is unknown, but director David F. Sandberg is back at the helm and will hopefully deliver another hair-raising tale.

DeathcemberA collection of 24 films that take a look at the dark side of the festive season. 24 international directors with the most diverse ideas and styles; linked by short animated segments that deal with the Advent calendar itself. This was making the festival rounds late last year and into this year, but I sure am hoping it gets a wider release so we can all see these holiday horrors.

Again, that is over 60 horror films to look forward to this year! And I'm sure there will be plenty more surprises in store for horror fans throughout the year. So much to be excited for in the horror genre this year!

LONG BEACH, CA – Midsummer Scream, the world’s largest Halloween and horror convention returns to Southern California July 31 - August 2 for three days of Halloween thrills and horrific chills as the fan-favorite convention celebrates its 5th Anniversary at the Long Beach Convention Center.

The ticket pre-sale for Midsummer Scream 2020 begins Friday, March 6 at MidsummerScream.org, with 40% off General Admission Single Day and Weekend passes with discount code MSS2020. In addition, this Friday only, admission to Midsummer Scream After Dark - the official Saturday night party - is only $10 (regular price $25) with any ticket purchase!

Guests can also opt for the popular limited-edition Gold Bat Weekend Pass, which enables guests into Midsummer Scream an hour early on Saturday and Sunday before the convention opens to the general public; front of line priority access to panel presentations and attractions throughout the venue; a collectible lanyard and credential; a Gold Bat 2020 enamel pin; and admission to Midsummer Scream After Dark.

The underlying theme of Midsummer Scream 2020 is "Vintage Trick or Treating", and all of the imagery, pageantry, and ghoulish good fun that comes with memories of October in years gone by. Halloween of yesteryear will be showcased throughout the weekend in multiple panel presentations, merchandise, and more.

With an estimated 40,000 attendees flocking to Southern California to participate in this year’s event, the decision was made to add a third day to the mix - a Friday night preview that will give fans access to all of the vendors on the convention’s sprawling show floor, unique limited-engagement programming specifically for that evening only, and a chance for Gold Bat and weekend passholders to pick up their credentials early.

"Last year, our continued growth dictated that we take over the entirety of the Long Beach Convention Center," says David Markland, Executive Director of Midsummer Scream. "For our Fifth Anniversary celebration, the team agreed that it is time to make this a three-day event, which is exactly what we’ve done for 2020."

Midsummer Scream is proud to announce the return of Southern California’s largest haunt events to the show for a weekend of world-class presentations, surprises, and major announcements. These industry leaders include Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights, Knott’s Scary Farm, LA Haunted Hayride, Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor, and Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Fright Fest.

The iconic dark zone, Hall of Shadows, returns with the theme of Trick or Treat Forever! featuring approximately 20 haunted attractions and displays, daily exhibitions by the Decayed Brigade slider team, and the largest experience CalHauntS has ever designed for Midsummer Scream, "Trick or Treat Lane" - a fully functional neighborhood adorned with vintage Halloween decorations where surprises and interactive fun abound!

With more than 300 artisans and exhibitors, Midsummer Scream’s show floor has become a shopping destination for fans of all ages, featuring one-of-a-kind artwork, props, Halloween accessories, clothing, and makeup supplies. This year's powerhouse lineup of favorite vendors includes Bearded Lady’s Mystic Museum, Trick or Treat Studios, BlackCraft, Chicken Lips, and Immortal Masks. Also found on the show floor will be the beloved Paranormal Pixie's Pumpkin Patch where kids and parents can participate in live entertainment and crafts throughout the weekend with the likes of Buster Balloon, as well as a performance stage where Mudd the Magnificent and others will mesmerize and entertain passersby!

Live entertainment abounds at Midsummer Scream, from the show floor to Theatre Macabre on the upper level of the convention center’s main concourse. Returning again to thrill guests are Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group, Force of Nature Productions, and more!

Midsummer Scream’s own film festival, The Screaming Room presented by HorrorBuzz, screens a variety of horror short film blocks throughout the weekend.

This is Midsummer Scream’s fifth year partnering with Kitten Rescue Los Angeles in presenting the Black Cat Lounge, where guests can mix and mingle with adorable felines roaming freely through a decorated play space. The Black Cat Lounge gives guests looking to adopt a pet the perfect opportunity to bond with their new little friends and give them fur-ever homes.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 6 at MidsummerScream.org. More news and information regarding Midsummer Scream 2020 will be announced in the weeks and months ahead!

Many people (including myself) are keeping to themselves and staying home in order to help halt the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. That means that many of us are looking for entertainment to pass the days and nights at home. I've spent long hours scrolling through Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Shudder, and so forth to find something to watch, and I figured why not share the fruits of my labor with others who are seeking to temporarily escape our scary reality.

Below, you'll find horror films streaming on Amazon Prime (in the USA as of March 14th, 2020) that I recommend. Amazon Prime has a lot of excellent horror films available to stream for free (if you have an Amazon Prime membership) from all eras and sub-genres, from 1920's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to recent films like Midsommar. The films listed below are ones I personally recommend, from silly to gruesome to scary and everything in-between! I've added dates to some of the titles to differentiate them from remakes/originals or other films with the same name.

I hope the following is helpful to you when seeking out horror films to watch on Amazon Prime (and check out my lists for Netflix and Hulu too!).

As we all spend more and more time at home until the COVID-19 virus pandemic is contained, we are all looking for something to pass the time and something to take our minds off the troubles of the world. I've been escaping reality by watching horror movies and have been spending a lot of time searching Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and more looking for something to watch. No doubt you have been doing the same thing, so I wanted to make things a little easier for you by sharing a list of recommended horror movies you can stream now (at least in the US as of March 15th, 2020).

In addition to a list of horror films to stream on Amazon Prime I shared recently, I wanted to also post a list of horror movies available on Netflix! While Netflix doesn't have as much horror as other platforms might, there are still many great titles on the streaming service. Whether you are looking for something new (or something new to you) or want to revisit an old favorite, there are plenty of horror films to watch now on Netflix, check them out below:
